To not go to A&E again?

reallydontwantaande · 08/07/2023 17:14

Went to A&E on Thursday night after collapsing at home and then again in A&E, spent eight hours on a drip and sent home as bloods were normal. They said thought had a gastric bug as was +++ vomiting and fever.

Have been to A&E five times since the start of April with similar episodes of collapsing. Each time it’s been put down to panic/dissociative attacks. Which would sort of make sense as my MH isn’t great.

I’ve also however had diarrhea for well over a year. Had a normal colonoscopy end of Feb 22 and told its probably stress/IBS.

Went to the toilet this morning, and again twice this afternoon - heavy rectal bleeding. Toilet bowl bright red. Didn’t even notice I was bleeding until I stood up. I’ve had spotting before but never bleeding like that. Wasn’t when I was opening my bowels - was just having a wee - but the bleeding is definitely coming from the back. Felt a bit sick/giddy standing up.

111 have said to go to A&E again.

I’m mortified at the thought of going back there again, I feel like they must be thinking I’m an hypochondriac now - a couple of the nurses have said, ‘oooh, back again’ etc and have said no, the bleeding feels like it’s external, it’s bright red. There is a fair bit but it’s worse when I sit down on the toilet which makes me feel it’s something on the outside that’s splitting? It’s not so bad when I just sit still. It’s not pouring or anything.

I’ve managed to persuade 111 to get an out of hours GP to call me instead rather than spending another night in casualty, was that stupid? A&E is 5 mins in a taxi, I just don’t want them to think I’m being a hypochondriac when it’s probably only piles!

Oh, and remember any medication you need, plus the repeat prescription slip, as it saves reciting a whole list if you're like me!

Beach11 · 08/07/2023 19:27

Hope you get answers this time 🤞🏻

Sirzy · 08/07/2023 19:29

If you can’t be seen NOW I would go straight to a and e with that level of bleeding

reallydontwantaande · 08/07/2023 19:30

GP’s seeing me at 8. In taxi now.

Good luck op glad your getting seen

Toothiepegg · 08/07/2023 19:34

I hope that you manage to get some answers. Thinking of you.

PlainOldEmmaJane · 08/07/2023 19:34

Has anyone checked your calprotectin levels in a stool sample? Or your blood inflammatory markers? A clear colonoscopy wouldn’t rule out a diagnosis of something like Crohn’s disease that could be further up your gut than the camera can go. They need to do a full review of you.

ButImNotOldEnough · 08/07/2023 19:43

Have you been following through with your normal GP? A&E don’t have the capacity to track ongoing symptoms which is why you’re probably not getting to the bottom of this. Hope you’re ok Flowers

TappingTed · 08/07/2023 19:47

All the best to you. As not nice as it is- a hospital admission might be just the right thing to get all the investigations you need done all organised quickly. Waiting as an out patient wouldn’t be so quick. But I’d be prepared for two nights as nothing would get done on Sunday unless urgent or acute…

ButImNotOldEnough · 08/07/2023 19:47

Though I missed the most important bit, YABU not to go to A&E tonight. You definitely need seen, glad they’ve made you an appointment!

GP’s very quick to say it’s all anxiety and to take more diazepam/beta blockers. Have just been to toilet in hospital and nurse came through with me, said that’s a lot of blood and I’ve done the right thing. Obs are OK though.

They said they did a calprotectin at the time of colonoscopy, I think I remember that. Also got a lot of biopsies taken, they said they scoped whole of large bowel. I remember they said there was blood at the time. They’ve taken a urine sample just now but what use that is I’m not sure.

Good luck OP I hope they get to the bottom of it finally. A year is a long time to be suffering from diarrhoea.

Bigbadmama · 08/07/2023 20:04

@reallydontwantaande thinking about you and sending a hand hold.

OneAtATime · 08/07/2023 20:05

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/07/2023 20:19

Your GP sounds like a twit. Glad you are getting care now. Fingers crossed for you. Keep pushing for an answer. 💖

L1342 · 08/07/2023 20:21

All the best! Hopefully they do some thorough investigating!

NewNovember · 08/07/2023 20:21

That amount of blood isn't normal glad you went to be checked out.

Festoonedflurryfairy · 08/07/2023 20:27

You poor thing op. Sending you all the very best. It’s ridiculous how often you have to go back to gp and A&E to be taken seriously.

It is also incredible the amount of prejudice that gets aimed at you if you have “anxiety” written on your file.

Surely anxious people are just as prone as non-anxious people to get physical symptoms and physical
diseases?

I hope it all works out for you 💐

PinkStarAtNight · 08/07/2023 20:27

Hope you're ok OP, Sou ds like you're being looked after now Flowers

BreehyHinnyBrinnyHoohyHah · 08/07/2023 20:30

I really think HCP need more training around what normal anxiety related symptoms are and why it's important not to prejudice a diagnosis. I've had a real physical concern dismissed as anxiety before it was finally taken seriously, and it seems to be a common theme on here.

winterchills · 08/07/2023 20:33

So so glad u are being seen!!

Cakeandcookies · 08/07/2023 20:39

Good luck OP 💐 vet well soon and hopefully you get some answers x

ehb102 · 08/07/2023 20:39

Anxiety might make you throw up or give you diarrhoea but it doesn't have the power to make you bleed. Sometimes the GPs need a smack.
