To not go to A&E again?

reallydontwantaande · 08/07/2023 17:14

Went to A&E on Thursday night after collapsing at home and then again in A&E, spent eight hours on a drip and sent home as bloods were normal. They said thought had a gastric bug as was +++ vomiting and fever.

Have been to A&E five times since the start of April with similar episodes of collapsing. Each time it’s been put down to panic/dissociative attacks. Which would sort of make sense as my MH isn’t great.

I’ve also however had diarrhea for well over a year. Had a normal colonoscopy end of Feb 22 and told its probably stress/IBS.

Went to the toilet this morning, and again twice this afternoon - heavy rectal bleeding. Toilet bowl bright red. Didn’t even notice I was bleeding until I stood up. I’ve had spotting before but never bleeding like that. Wasn’t when I was opening my bowels - was just having a wee - but the bleeding is definitely coming from the back. Felt a bit sick/giddy standing up.

111 have said to go to A&E again.

I’m mortified at the thought of going back there again, I feel like they must be thinking I’m an hypochondriac now - a couple of the nurses have said, ‘oooh, back again’ etc and have said no, the bleeding feels like it’s external, it’s bright red. There is a fair bit but it’s worse when I sit down on the toilet which makes me feel it’s something on the outside that’s splitting? It’s not so bad when I just sit still. It’s not pouring or anything.

I’ve managed to persuade 111 to get an out of hours GP to call me instead rather than spending another night in casualty, was that stupid? A&E is 5 mins in a taxi, I just don’t want them to think I’m being a hypochondriac when it’s probably only piles!

Doctors have been in and said it’s vanishingly unlikely to be serious/cancer, more likely to be a ruptured vein internally, internal piles that are bleeding out a bit (think that’s the same thing) or possibly diverticulitis (but said that’s unlikely). They said it should stop within 24-48 hours. Going to have to stay in tonight and they’ll check again tomorrow but they think it should stop within a couple of days thank goodness.

They said do need to figure out why diarrhoea though, said could be bile acid malabsorption, and that there’s medicines they can do to stop that as it’ll be dehydrating me and causing collapses.

Ivyiris · 09/07/2023 00:12

I have BAM and perversely although it causes diarrhoea, it can also lead to piles! Good news is the medicine is low key and very effective once you sort the dose out. There are also some supplements you can take. Good luck, you got this x

Re the collasping ask about PoTS.
Postural tachycardia syndrome (PoTS) - NHS (www.nhs.uk)
People with PoTS have a trouble with their autonomic nervous system. When someone without PoTs moves around their arteries constrict to have constant blood flow to the heart and brain - this doesn't happen in people with PoTs so they get dips in blood flow to heart and brain. This can cause fainting but also their body responds by thinking they are in crisis mode and sends out adrenaline to increase heart beat / blood flow....people with PoTS are having their bodies physically create panic attacks...their hearts are beating faster and they feel anxious. It is very common in teens but adults can have it to and can sometimes be misdiagnosed as anxiety but fainting is a sign. Although my daughter does not faint she gets fatigue and bad chest pains / headaches from the blood rushes. Although to be fair some people with PoTS just get fatigue and anxiety.

Feel for you OP. Hope you get some answers. Sending supportive hugs.

reallydontwantaande · 09/07/2023 07:54

I will do, when the doctors come round later on I’m going to try and have a proper chat with them. Still feel dopey as hell. Just waiting on the nurse coming round. Shattered as it’s an admissions ward so folk were in and out all night.

POTS does match up to the collapsing I think. They said something last night re ‘very rapid gastro-colic’ reflex which essentially means within 10 mins of eating I have to run to the loo, and am on and off the loo for the next hour. Puts you off eating. Hopefully they can actually get stuff sorted this time. I haven’t told family I’ve been readmitted as I’m sure they think I’m mucking about, was only when nurse came with me to toilet last night that she said oh no, that’s not normal.

Plenty of people with a gall bladder have BAM. Me included.

Oh OP, you poor sodd.

I hope you get some answers soon, although these things are never swift are they?

girlswillbegirls · 09/07/2023 08:56

Your poor thing. Please keep insisting to get answers 🙏 Your health is the main thing and your symptoms need to be looked at. Don't minimise it OP in order to not bother people. Best of luck xx

Doctors have been round and said something about haemoglobin or something along that lines, said it’s 131 or something, and they want me to stay in today, get repeat bloods, get bladder checked and regular pain relief. Shattered doesn’t cover it. Managed a shower and a ‘hot roll’ for breakfast. Only in Glasgow.

A hot roll in the QE.... Wow. The entire month I was there I never saw a single one!

Good to hear you're being looked after.

Opposite end of the city 😉, I did get toast last night but apparently that’s a nighttime thing only!

OP posts:
PragmaticWench · 09/07/2023 09:11

I love that toast is just for nighttime. 😁Glad you're being thoroughly checked though OP, being admitted does make all the tests happen faster. I'm in hospital with something different and whilst it seems to be taking days and days for each new test, I appreciate that if I was an out-patient it would take months most likely.

OH I'm sorry, mine kicked in after gall bladder removal. Nobody warned me beforehand.

reallydontwantaande · 09/07/2023 11:16

yeah I’m not getting home today. Staying in overnight again they think. UTI, GI bug and acute on chronic retention. BP dropped to 80/50 and they’ve whacked a catheter in that’s drained off a litre in 3 minutes. Not good.

‘See all the times you’ve collapsed you’ve probably actually been physically ill, which is why it’s built up so much to this.’

OP posts:
blahblahblah1654 · 09/07/2023 11:18

Op I'm so glad you were seen! Hope things improve quickly.

Tempone · 09/07/2023 11:23

If I were you op when you are better I would put in a formal complaint to your gp.not good enough at all.

reallydontwantaande · 09/07/2023 12:06

I will do, hospital said the same thing - that something should have been picked up on. I’m shattered.
