To not go to A&E again?

Went to A&E on Thursday night after collapsing at home and then again in A&E, spent eight hours on a drip and sent home as bloods were normal. They said thought had a gastric bug as was +++ vomiting and fever.

Have been to A&E five times since the start of April with similar episodes of collapsing. Each time it’s been put down to panic/dissociative attacks. Which would sort of make sense as my MH isn’t great.

I’ve also however had diarrhea for well over a year. Had a normal colonoscopy end of Feb 22 and told its probably stress/IBS.

Went to the toilet this morning, and again twice this afternoon - heavy rectal bleeding. Toilet bowl bright red. Didn’t even notice I was bleeding until I stood up. I’ve had spotting before but never bleeding like that. Wasn’t when I was opening my bowels - was just having a wee - but the bleeding is definitely coming from the back. Felt a bit sick/giddy standing up.

111 have said to go to A&E again.

I’m mortified at the thought of going back there again, I feel like they must be thinking I’m an hypochondriac now - a couple of the nurses have said, ‘oooh, back again’ etc and have said no, the bleeding feels like it’s external, it’s bright red. There is a fair bit but it’s worse when I sit down on the toilet which makes me feel it’s something on the outside that’s splitting? It’s not so bad when I just sit still. It’s not pouring or anything.

I’ve managed to persuade 111 to get an out of hours GP to call me instead rather than spending another night in casualty, was that stupid? A&E is 5 mins in a taxi, I just don’t want them to think I’m being a hypochondriac when it’s probably only piles!

CT scan came back normal, no cancer or anything like that. Record speed for the NHS to get it ordered at 9am, and done and reported back by 7.

Surgeons said they think problem is with functioning of bowel/bladder and the right messages being sent to nerves and muscles. That and my urethra has re-narrowed itself. So referring to urology for another dilation and scope - whether they can do that now or as an outpatient. They did say last time I had one I was probably going to need every 1-2 years and we’ve hit 4 so I guess that’s not bad.

meantime said either I go home catheterised or ISC, or they trial without catheter here.

been moved to a different surgical ward too. Wanting home today but can’t see that happening just now, as long as catheter’s in its too sore to sit/stand without help.

Oh god, get them to put it in! I don’t think you need to wait any longer, you poor thing. I would also consider looking at possible H-EDS diagnosis. (Doctors hate diagnosing it, though.) It’s a connective tissue disorder that can affect bowel motility, absorption of nutrients and other unrelated medical problems.)

Good to know that the NHS can work fast. Hope you feel some reassurance with the results and that today sees you feeling better.

Back home - catheter out at 9am, went for a wee at 11am and got discharged at 11.30. Uni support worker came and picked me up/drove me back to my flat - thank God for that as I’d never have managed alone. Cannula site is a bit swollen/not sure that the line didn’t tissue, and will need to go out later on to get meds from pharmacy (antibiotics, laxatives and pain relief) but aside from that all OK. Managed to wee again since getting home so that was a relief.

Good to hear. Glad you had some resolution!

Littlemissprosecco · 11/07/2023 15:29

Do you have help/ support?
House mates? To help with getting your prescription etc…

Flat’s empty as it’s summer so most people away, but have got 24 hour reception (private student halls) so can get support from them if needed. Re prescription, support worker said if it’s ready before 5 she can go get it, if not I’m happy to jump in a taxi, nip out and get it and then go straight home back to bed!

Thankfully in about 2 weeks time am going down to spend 2-3 weeks with family so that will be a huge help.

Think my aunty that visited last night would help too if need be, she’s going to ring me tonight.

As long as you’re not completely alone! I have DDs about your age, I would hate to think of them completely isolated and struggling medically. But if your Aunt’s phoning that’s ok. I’m sure you have your friends and deliveroo on speed dial

Littlemissprosecco · 11/07/2023 16:11

At least you’ve got reception too

Sirzy · 11/07/2023 16:14

Is there no way you can go home now and be with people who can help you more?

katepilar · 12/07/2023 14:27

Glad you are well enough to be home again. Thank you for updating. Hope you get the problem sorted as well as possibly possible.
