Ban them in urban areas.

Whilst I get the point about living in a rural area, my family are all country dwellers, living in small villages on the moors, and the only one that has a 4x4 is an actual farmer.
The rest just drive normal cars, and manage, somehow, to survive. 😵‍💫

puffyisgood · 07/07/2023 15:59

YANBU. They're a travesty within even the outer limits of any decent sized town or city.

SadSorrowTree · 07/07/2023 15:57

She hasn't been charged.

I was going to say thats very quick, the CPS take ages to agree or disagree a charge normally

Plus I should have added to my post above, even if it is dangerous driving, its an accident by virtue that you can act recklessly but still accidentally cause harm. It would be your fault but it doesnt mean you did it intentionally, therefore its an accident.

Im sure she didnt set out that morning to find a school to ram into and kill/maim people. (or she might have done, Im sure we'll know in time)

SwirlyShirly · 07/07/2023 16:00

The police lady, I forget her name, who announced the death of the young girl, it broke my heart. It's so very sad.

Malarandras · 07/07/2023 16:03

We live in a democracy, if you want the law changed so badly then lobby your MP, start a campaign or a petition. Another thread on an anonymous internet forum will achieve absolutely nothing.

Fightyouforthatpie · 07/07/2023 16:03

IfYouDontAsk · 07/07/2023 15:46

We have no idea what the cause of this accident was. A child has died. Wouldn’t it be more respectful to wait until we know what actually happened here before leaping to apportion blame?

But where's the fun in that when you can thrown terms like wank panzer about and call people fat wankers?

Tincan5555 · 07/07/2023 16:06

We don’t want them in the countryside either.
Drivers drive in the middle of lanes because they don’t want any hedge growth touching the sides expecting older smaller cars to literally drive into walls and hedges. They will not move and go way too fast.

We have schools too in towns and rural areas.

Anxioys · 07/07/2023 16:07

Sorry, I should have said she has been bailed after an arrest for causing death by dangerous driving.Any charge looks like it will be considered by end July.

But if she is charged, while there are certainly lesser crimes, causing death by dangerous driving carries a maximum life sentence. The government changed it a few years ago after public pressure which had indicated most regard it as similar to murder.

Sunnyfunnytimes · 07/07/2023 16:12

This thread is deeply distasteful. This accident didn’t occur as the car was an suv, and yes a mini could have caused equal devastation if driven at speed, as could a van or many other vehicles.

this is a tragedy, and it’s not clear what happened, why the woman has been arrested, held in custody and then bailed , when it’s also being said medical issue.

either way this tragedy is not an opportunity to excitedly discuss car choices.

People often get arrested for things that they are later NFAd for

People are sometimes charged and charges dropped

People can be prosecuted and not convicted.

As you say its a hugely serious category and the number of people involved adds to that.

It takes ages for charges sometimes, I think July might be a stretch but we'll see.

FairlySane · 07/07/2023 16:16

You can get bitten by a Yorkie or a Rottweiler- the Rottweiler will do more damage because it’s bigger and stronger. Same rule of logic applies re Mini / SUV.

I don't think it is distasteful to query whether the type of vehicle involved in this horrific accident contributed to the destruction caused.

People are getting hung up on the weight of the vehicle but the main issue with SUV 4x4s is the height. They have huge wheels way bigger than a normal car or 7-seater car, the driver is very high up so cannot see smaller road users and pedestrians and the front of the vehicles with the bar going across means they can crash through barriers far easier than normal vehicles even vans. They are designed to drive off road not on urban roads. All the things people claim they need their 4x4 for can be done with a 7seatee car or a car with a roof box

willWillSmithsmith · 07/07/2023 14:52

Lots of SUV drivers on the thread?

Obviously.😁😁

MLMsuperfan · 07/07/2023 16:22

Perhaps require a more advanced license for wank panzers.

Petrarkanian · 07/07/2023 16:30

All this bollocks about living rurally and needing a 4x4. I live deep, deep in the countryside and have a teeny tiny C1.

There is no way a small car would have done as much damage as that car, so much less momentum.

Whatnextcrazyworld · 07/07/2023 16:31

I agree with you op. Most people - especially in cities - don't need vehicles anything like the size of these things. The weight and power behind them is horrifying.

Too many sheople wanting what "everyone" else has. Madness.

As for the way so many people drive these days, don't start me on that subject! Entitled, rude, selfish ... and DANGEROUS. Admittedly in all sorts of vehicles but these massive 4x4 SUVs give an extra layer of power, safety and protection for the (smug) driver and their passengers; as for anyone else, they don't stand a chance against such tanks.

The world has gone mad in so many ways and much of the "progress" we humans make is detrimental to us and our surroundings.

I'd vote for that- plus some actual enforcement of school streets

@Hibiscrubbed

Farming in Wimbledon?

No…. I farm outside of London (obviously) but for work (I don’t actually farm personally full time, I have another job) I come into town quite regularly. I don’t compartmentalise my life so much that I have separate city and farm life cars, so I drive my smallest car into town. It’s big. Has a winch. G-Wizs are no good at hauling cows out of ditches or fallen logs out of my local community’s roads, you see…

MLMsuperfan · 07/07/2023 16:22

What's the point? If you are trying to remove them from city streets isn't there a risk people would just take the advanced test and get a wank panzer licence?

I’m guessing you don’t live at the top of a hill, properly rural, and with any countryside responsibilities, then. You’d be hard pushed to get your little roller skate anywhere near our farmhouse in wet weather, let alone winter.

Totally agree @DataNotLore

They're aspirational - silly people who think that owning a 4-wheel drive means that they spend their weekends in the country. When really, they're suburbanites who can't drive.

Thatbloodyhedge · 07/07/2023 16:38

And the stupidest post for a while goes to the OP
It was a heartbreaking accident

There is an argument for high powered vehicles to need extra driver training. Plenty end up in bad accidents because of incapable drivers coming into some cash.

Sure. But the OP wants them banned.

How do you think the OP would get on trying to ban Ferraris, Lambos, Mclarens, some Porsches, Koeniggseggs, and the like from central London….?

😂

Agree they are absolute cunts. I thought it was because they were on their phone and that's why they were drifting into the middle.
We live rural ish I have a small car never been snowed in. The tractors clear the snow way before we go anywhere.
Dangerous vehicles in the hands of imbeciles thinking everyone thinks they are rich.
