Can everyone stop driving these fucking stupid ego-tanks in urban areas now?

Who needs a fucking wank panzer in Wimbledon???

Ban them in urban areas.

@Mapples yes of course I realise that. I was rebutting the point that SUVs are hard to drive. The suggestion seemed to be this was particularly so for women. As a woman who regularly drives an SUV I was disagreeing. And noting that I find our SUV easier to drive than our other, smaller, car. If the suggestion was that SUVs are built for men (who are on average taller) I was noting that the sensors, etc make it very easy to drive and manoeuvre (regardless of height).

Zonder · 08/07/2023 09:13

I'm a bit confused about one thing. I have seen photos of the car up by the school building having ploughed through the front garden. I can't see how it got in the garden as on aerial photos the fence all looks intact.

Ok, so imagine you do ban them in urban areas - I have one, live rurally and regularly tow a livestock trailer - what happens when I need to drive through a town/city?

Drive round the town/city?

SpongeDiving · 08/07/2023 09:32

people talking about “knee-jerk” reactions as if they are always a bad thing. remember Dunblane? one incident led to guns being banned in the U.K. sometimes things happen that are so awful action HAS to be taken

I think knee-jerk refers to responses that are based primarily on emotion, don’t take all the facts into account and are disproportionate. Swift and decisive, but also logical and proportionate is a different matter.

There may be a solid case for banning or restricting SUVs, but it hasn’t been made on this thread, which is in response to a single and unusually shocking incident and consists largely of ranting about status symbols and crap driving. The former is neither here nor there and bad driving could be handled much more severely if the powers that be so chose. Mounting the pavement outside a school keeps being cited on here as an example of what SUV drivers do. There is no excuse for it and it’s dangerous - albeit less so - in even the smallest car, so start imposing heavy penalties.

Support! Also make the roads that go past schools car free. Then kids actually have a chance to get to school safely on foot/bicycle without the risk of being run over.

Yes, that will be great for parents and pupils with disabilities 🙄

It's called a School Street around here and it dies exactly that. It's great.
@ilovesooty those who do need to drive still can as they get an exemption. If only those that NEED to drive drove then there'd be a hell of a lot less cars around.

VenusClapTrap · 08/07/2023 11:05

So many farmers on here. Which is funny, because all the farmers I know in real life have neither the money for the sort of car involved in the accident nor the time to piss around on Mumsnet.

Anxioys · 08/07/2023 11:11

@Dguu6u - yes you can strongly regulate roads around schools on the grounds of public safety. If people are stupid enough to speed in urban areas then do it and make the fines (as they should be) proportionate to income. It can be enforced easily enough via cameras.

Schools make it overwhelmingly clear where they are, the restrictions and an appropriate speed (sub 20mph). If people still cannot slow down or take proper care they should be penalized properly with points and in the pocket.

That link doesn't work for me @DataNotLore can you post a screenshot?

Gulikitti · 08/07/2023 13:15

@Zonder Not quite sure what they are trying to prove that could happen to any vehicle.

Back in 2014 the Irish Road Safety government department put out an advert on TV called 'The Classroom' to highlight that 28 children had died due to speeding from 2000 to 2014.
It's too close to what happened at Wimbledon to share the link but it's there on YouTube .
In the ad it was a smaller car. It was the speed it the shape of the car which was blamed.

DataNotLore · 08/07/2023 13:56

Any recent, uk links to small cars doing this?

SUV's seem to be a reoccurring theme, bit like certain breeds of dog being involved in attacks

How many minis have you heard have caused such damage?

Cyclegranny · 08/07/2023 14:33

That’s why we need proper long term solution and by the way if you actually look we are campaigning about this all the time. This is the first time you are taking notice.

Cyclegranny · 08/07/2023 14:34

I bet they don’t

Cyclegranny · 08/07/2023 14:35

In cities yes

I hate big F off cars too! I had a 4WD once - dh bought it for me 2Nd hand, wasn’t as bad as some but visibility out the back when reversing was shocking - I dinged it so many times & never do that w my polo!!

Aqua22a · 08/07/2023 14:53

Some of the comments on here are the height of ignorance. If this was down to mechanical failure or a medical incident, the driver is not entirely to blame. If it was because of drink/drugs or mobile phone use, throw the book at her and make an example of her. RIP dear little Selena.

DataNotLore · 07/07/2023 14:02

@missmollygreen

How many of your children would you be happy to sacrifice for this?

Personally, I think one is too many and any parent who isn't angry needs to look in the mirror.

We should ban peanuts too

And all swimming in the sea

And bicycles

And all forms of knives

And erm, other stuff

Not sure what point you expect to be made...all cars can crash through fences and kill people

MissFancyDay · 08/07/2023 15:27

Of course all cars have accidents and kill people, the point, that many people have made, is that in similar accidents these tanks kill and injure MORE people than small cars.

It is no different from the gun situation in the U.S. People know that they are more dangerous for pedestrians, they just don't care because they want them. It's as simple as that. Selfishness.
