Not my problem.

You got yourself into this situation.

That's it? That's your totally grown up and well researched answer to a not unusual situation?

You're making it your problem by with your wanting to ban SUVs/large vehicles. You need a solution. Or to stop being a reactionary dick.

User10486743 · 07/07/2023 18:54

Good Lord, another MN ban the SUV thread.

How many uninformed threads on this subject do we need? You don't know what happened or what connection it has to an SUV other than random chance. There are awful car accidents every day involving all sorts of vehicles. Probably a lot of them involve the kind of car you drive.

It's not the fact that they're involved in accidents per se, it's the fact that when they hit pedestrian they're something like 8x more likely to kill them than a smaller car. Surely that is food for thought.

I’m guessing you don’t live at the top of a hill, properly rural, and with any countryside responsibilities, then. You’d be hard pushed to get your little roller skate anywhere near our farmhouse in wet weather, let alone winter.

Yes but this thread isn't aimed at you.

The sort of response I would expect from some one who cannot handle opposing views and trust to stifle discussion. Your are not welcome here 🥱

Not at all, but if the OP is talking about urban areas and SUVs then to say you live up a mountain in the middle of nowhere doesn't really make you the target 🙄😘

FYI I live in the top of the Pennines and it's pretty dam harsh in winter you ain't getting up most of the roads in a normal car but I regularly commute into urban city's so yes it does 🙄😍

Makes your post a bit pointless then.

I’d say definitely not the target.

Justputitdown · 07/07/2023 20:01

I'm not going to get into an argument with someone who can't grasp nuance. Have a nice evening up the mountain.

I live in a hill farm, I work regularly in central London. I think I can join in.

Wenfy · 07/07/2023 22:24

The problem isn’t SUVs. The problem is that whenever an SUV causes an accident near a school it always tends to be a small woman driving them. As someone who has test driven one I can confirm that even with power steering they are more difficult to move / brake than a smaller car. Manufacturers need to be honest that they make / test them for men.

How do you think poor people who live in / near farms manage? I live in a rural area - all the farm hands drive second hand polos. The cars seem to handle fine in all weather types with the right chains / wheels.

No- it's not possible to camp without an SUV.

Bloody hell, I must have imagined all those camping holidays I had using perfectly ordinary estate cars, sometimes with a roof box, over 40-odd years.

Dguu6u · 08/07/2023 07:37

Support! Also make the roads that go past schools car free. Then kids actually have a chance to get to school safely on foot/bicycle without the risk of being run over.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 08/07/2023 07:55

I’ve been watching the local news here in London and this has really affected the people directly involved and indirectly involved and happened in a safe area (school).

My ex colleague lives in the area and has grandchildren living locally there. Don’t think any of them go to private school and not sure if they drive a SUV (she didn’t) but she’d have saddened by this.

I completely disagree with this. We have an SUV and also a small car. The SUV is far, far easier to drive than the smaller car. The visibility is great, it has censors all round and a reversing camera. It is incredibly easy to drive and park. I accept that there are pedestrian safety arguments against SUVs but they are definitely not harder to drive.

You realise lots of smaller cars have sensors, reversing cameras and other safety features right? It depends what model and what trim you get.

I suppose the point is that recent improvements in car safety may mitigate a lot of the risks associated with SUVs. I would tend to share the quoted poster’s feeling that an SUV with safety sensors like lane depart fitted and activated is safer than a smaller car without, but I don’t know if that is actually true. Nor do I know whether it alters the difference in risk between an SUV and a smaller car where both have these devices. Advances in car safety features should be an important part of this discussion, and research should become available as more cars have them.

AlanGrantsNeckerchief · 08/07/2023 09:05

unfortunately some people drive like bellends around schools whatever their vehicle - or at least they do around my son’s primary school - mounting the pavement to park while children are walking on it (no idea what the circumstances were of this tragic accident i’m talking generally about what i see everyday on the school run)

people talking about “knee-jerk” reactions as if they are always a bad thing. remember Dunblane? one incident led to guns being banned in the U.K. sometimes things happen that are so awful action HAS to be taken
