To think men can NEVER be mothers

I am furious that men like this think they can call themselves mums/mothers. This deserves a wide audience, hence posting in AIBU.

It really is the Emperor’s New Clothes!

I bet their actual mum is fucking furious.

Also can you get even more of a depressing stereotype than a ‘woman’ doing the laundry?

TeaKlaxon · 29/06/2023 17:12

Leafstamp · 29/06/2023 17:07

@TeaKlaxon Clymene was clearly talking about the way mother is defined in law. She did not make any claim that that is the only definition.

Mother can also be a verb or mean a female ancestor. Obviously adoptive mothers are also mothers. But mothers are never male, that’s for sure.

Bullshit. The definition was posted because of an implied claim that the definition means this woman should not be allowed to describe herself as a mum.

The poster's logic is that mother means someone who gave birth to a child, this woman didn't give birth to her child, therefore the legal definition if proof that she can't be the mother.

If that poster recognised other definitions, then the definition she posted would be irrelevant.

I saw this and thought it was a joke. Of all the female mothers they could have spoken to they chose a man mother who looked like he was from the 1950's

Well a lot of men who say they are trans women dress like that because they think either women look like that or that's what a woman is (dress and dangly earrings) or maybe that's what mummy used to dress like and they want to be mummy. It's all a bit like the film with the mummy issues Psycho

So glad I drew your attention to this thread @TeaKlaxon Grin

Perhaps be less smug about implying that the only people who can use the term mother are people who have given birth.

bellinisurge · 29/06/2023 17:14

W@nk3rs gonna w@nk. It's so pathetic

SunnyEgg · 29/06/2023 17:14

Yanbu men cannot be mothers

jeaux90 · 29/06/2023 14:21

I also object to the rank homophobia.

If this is a woman it means men can be lesbians, I don't bloody think so.

Don't let the TRA hear you say that. A man who identifies as a woman and fancies women (as in real women) is a lesbian to the TRA. They have a right to use their 'lady penis' on a fellow lesbian and lesbians who say no are called bigots. It's a crazy mixed up belief system.

Clymene · 29/06/2023 17:16

Giving a legal definition of a word isn't smug @TeaKlaxon. I'm sorry that you've interpreted it like that.

I really thought this one was a piss take it was SO ludicrous. And no actual mother would a) put the washing machine in such a stupid place b) use a washing up bowl as a laundry basket!

This

ArabeIIaScott · 29/06/2023 17:17

The person is also cosplaying being poor.

'mothers like me who struggle'. Mate. No. It's very apparent the whole thing is play acting. You're an economist with a senior role in the TUC. Unless they're not paying their staff adequately, which would be ironic.

Summer2023hasarrived · 29/06/2023 17:18

Samcro · 29/06/2023 14:22

i saw that on the news. when they said they were a mum, I admit to saying your not.

I imagine quite a lot of people spat their tea out. I thought it was a prank but no it's a trans lobby person who feels he is a woman and a mummy. Could ITV not actually find a mother anywhere or did real women and mums reject the outfit for the role!

Indeed, pretending to be poor, pretending to be a mum and pretending to be a woman. Where was the actual mum, his/her wife whilst he acted out his fantasy fetish which was shown on the ITV news?

ArabeIIaScott · 29/06/2023 17:20

Yeah, probably tending to the actual child.

But as you've said it isn't the only meaning. Yet you tried to prove this man can't be a mother because of the legal definition. Which is it? Either 'mother' can mean different things and other people who haven't given birth can use the name, or they can't. This man thinks he's a mother

ITV don‘t actually use the word mother or woman though - they just say "this bill payer" and "customer" (both verbally and on the caption below) and I imagine they are just trying to be inclusive. I mean what does it matter if the person who is struggling to pay their bills is a woman or a man, they‘re both equally valid. I don‘t have a problem with ITV here.

It‘s only the person in the video who refers to themselves as a mother.

It‘s the person who posted the twitter link who has made this into something its not "ITV did a piece on (...) everyday mothers". I don‘t think that was the point at all.

It’s a story about how the increase in energy/water bills impacts MOTHERS, so yes, they’re heavily implying they think this dude is a mother. He/she smiles sweetly into the camera whilst pretending he is a poor mother struggling with his water bills. He washes a few bits and loads a few bits into the washing machine, swishing of the skirt as he/she goes. Well done that man showing us how hard it is

Bromptotoo · 29/06/2023 17:24

Let's start with definitions.

Why not just accept the person in that extract is a woman?

Bornin1989 · 29/06/2023 17:25

You're only a woman if you "feel" like a woman apparently. Since most women don't actually "feel" like women, we just are women, I'm guessing that doesn't count.

Cos he's a man.

Words have meanings, don't they?

If mumsnet could stop telling us we can't say that men aren't women and deleting our messages that would be great.

Indeed, that would be great.

Lots of ☀with this one.

Sneezel · 29/06/2023 17:30

The GRA itself confirms a father is always the father, and can NOT ever be the mother, and this was confirmed in the UK supreme court when Freddie Mcconnell took legal action (and lost) as she wanted to be called the 'father' of the baby she gave birth to. The importance of the terms ‘mother’ and ‘father’ were discussed in court. McConnell’s ‘right’ to be ‘validated’ as ‘father’ must be weighed against child’s right to know the truth.https://twitter.com/SVPhillimore/status/1616733253494259714
Then recently the CoTs group reported that European courts have confirmed the same thing. As they say, children don't exist to validate their father's fetishes or delusions https://childrenoftransitioners.org/2023/04/10/paperwork/

I know I’m going to be really flamed and I don’t think this in a nasty way at all… but I honestly feel that when I had my child I became a mother in lots of ways, I mean like I gained this kind of second sight/intuition to my children I never had with anyone else. My husband is an amazing dad and we parent 50/50 but he does not have my intuition when it comes to my babies. Men dont get it imo

I absolutely agree with you. Mothers have a stronger connection as they carry the child, the child is formed from their body and tissues. This is why it irks me even more that this man is claiming to be a mother, they honestly have no idea and zero understanding of what it is to be a one...they've just stepped into what they believe to be the official costume. Washing up as props.

It's downright insulting.

GiraffeDoor · 29/06/2023 17:35

Why is the premise of this whole article that energy/water bills affect mothers more than fathers anyway? My husband does probably 75% of the laundry in our house (for no reason other than I hate it).

I'm no fan of banning the word "woman" or "mother", but this absolutely is an example of a situation which never needed to be gendered in the first place.
