Husband and Chinese take away

SeaSnakes1 · 27/06/2023 18:49

We all love a Chinese take away in our house - we have three teenagers. A couple of months ago my husband had to go gluten free. Chinese take away is limited in terms of gluten free options so he’s said he’d rather not bother- fair enough his choice.

He’s now said nobody else in the house can get one as it’s cruel. He adored the Cantonese chicken balls and chicken chow mien. I thought he was joking , but he’s not. He has seriously said that it’s totally unacceptable and unfair for anyone to get a Chinese take away.

No yanbu.

prawnring · 27/06/2023 18:50

LTB. And I never say LTB.

Hawkins0001 · 27/06/2023 18:51

Why should the majority not have one just because of the minority that cannot?

CovetedAsFuck · 27/06/2023 18:51

That’s absurd

Clementineorsatsuma · 27/06/2023 18:51

He needs to learn to cook a Chinese Fakeaway for himself and try living in the real world!

bookworm44 · 27/06/2023 18:52

Definitely nbu! Personally i don't see why the whole house has to suffer. What do your teens think of his outrageous demands?

bleepbloopImABot · 27/06/2023 18:52

Am I still allowed to get one? Or your neighbours? Just how many people does he think he has the right to control?

Whichclubisittonight · 27/06/2023 18:52

Well, he‘s unreasonable to categorically state none of you can have Chinese, but it would be pretty mean of you all to sit an regularly eat it in front of him knowing he can‘t have it and really misses it.
Can‘t you find a compromise and either find some dishes he can eat (I went to a Chinese restaurant the other day and they had a huge GF and vegan menu so I‘m sure you could find somewhere that does it) or maybe try and find another takeaway that he can eat and that you all like?

Radiat · 27/06/2023 18:53

It’s a shame for him, but he’s being very selfish to outlaw Chinese food for the household. I’d never dream of telling people what they could and couldn’t eat.

Emmamoo89 · 27/06/2023 18:53

Yanbu

xsquared · 27/06/2023 18:53

Pretty sure any rice dish would be gluten free without the soy sauce.

This. How controlling

GabriellaMontez · 27/06/2023 18:55

If he was 7, and had just had this diagnosis, I would go along with this. For a few months.

NoSquirrels · 27/06/2023 18:55

How often are we talking that you want to get a Chinese takeaway, OP?

I’d be prepared to cut back and choose a different treat that easier for his dietary restrictions, and then when we did get a Chinese make sure there was some GF equivalents bought in for him.

Harrietsgirl · 27/06/2023 18:56

Gluten free pork/chicken balls and sauce are really easy to make. I made it for my husband when he was doing low Fodmap. Found the recipe and lots of other GF recipes by Googling.

SeaSnakes1 · 27/06/2023 18:57

we have been compromising by getting different take aways e.g gluten free fish & chips and a curry but I really want a Chinese. He’s really serious and I’m not sure how he’ll respond if I do it anyway

What about I'f you leave dh and eat at a restaurant

PoliticallyIncorrectHitchling · 27/06/2023 18:59

The needs of the many outweight the needs of the few

SillyBub · 27/06/2023 18:59

Well you're obviously NBU so I'll not respond forget on that.

Has he asked your local Chinese takeaway what gluten free dishes they could do for him? He might be surprised. He could even buy gluten free soy sauce to make a sauce at home that he could add to rice noodles?

Nowvoyager99 · 27/06/2023 18:59

What would this look like? Are you scared of him?

He is being utterly selfish and ridiculous.

SeaSnakes1 · 27/06/2023 19:01

We haven’t got a Chinese since he went GF. We don’t get one often, maybe every 2-3 months . We all just really fancy one lately

Buy him a huge steak and chips from the chippy and some GF larger. Buy yourselves Chinese. Be happy.

LadyAtNumber9 · 27/06/2023 19:04

I've had to go GF and DF but am OK about it. He is being overly controlling HOWEVER it's pretty mean to sit in front of him scoffing something he'd love but can't have.

lucya66 · 27/06/2023 19:07

If you love your husband, don’t torture him.
