To be irritated at everyone wanting to bring their dogs to our BBQ?

We have about 20 people (from 5 different families) coming over for a BBQ today 3-7/8pm (or whenever they want to leave!)

We are lucky in that we do have a big garden but we all have babies/ young children and we have 2 dogs of our own (that we’ll likely keep inside as it’s going to be 29 here today so too hot for them)

We have some shade in the garden, but that will pretty much be taken up by everyone plus all of our children and babies (going to put paddling pools and play mags down for the babies)

3 of the families have now asked to bring their dogs. DH just wants to say no, I feel like an arsehole saying no but equally, I really can’t be arsed with other people’s dogs crapping and weeing all over the lawn (we don’t let our 2 toilet on the lawn, they have a patch of grass and patio down the side of the house that they use) none of these dogs are well trained and I just know they’ll end up charging about, crashing into everything and everyone and I don’t want to have to worry about the babies on the playmats etc either.

TBH I’m a bit bewildered why people want to bring them? It’s going to be nearly 30 degrees, there’s not that much shade, they’re all only going to be here for 4/5 hours and all only live 5/10 mins away if they really felt like they had to go back to let the dogs out or what ever.

DH said they only want to bring them because we have a big garden and they think their dogs will probably have a ‘whale of a time’ charging about it, but I said surely they wouldn’t let their dogs do that in this heat anyway?

AIBU that it seems to be the case more and more nowadays that people can’t go anywhere without bringing their bloody dogs.

"No, sorry."

Saucery · 25/06/2023 10:51

I’d say no and I love dogs, have a dog and like to take her appropriate dog friendly places.
It’s too hot, they will likely play silly dog games getting themselves even hotter.

continentallentil · 25/06/2023 10:52

No, I like dogs, but dogs BBQ and babies sounds like hell.

Just say - ‘no, no dogs this time - it’s 29 degrees so we’re keeping ours inside - too hot and too much to manage with the BBQ and the kids. Thanks and see you at 3.’

StJulian2023 · 25/06/2023 10:52

YANBU. I simply don’t like dogs and when asked if they can come to my house I say no.

YeahIsaidit · 25/06/2023 10:52

I'm with DH, just say no. Maybe joke and say we only invited the human members of the family

Colourfingers2 · 25/06/2023 10:54

I wouldn’t let anyone bring any dog in my garden. About 25 years ago I allowed my ex wife’s friend to bring her weird hairless dog type thing to our house and it shat on the stairs on our bloody carpet.
I vowed then and there never to be stupid enough to allow another dog into my home and I never have.

rwalker · 25/06/2023 10:55

No it’ll be chaos

ThursdayFreedom · 25/06/2023 10:56

I love dogs & would be fine with it with my friends dogs, but if your friends have poorly trained dogs I'd find it simple to say 'sorry, not this time because if everyone brings their dogs it'll be chaos & too much with all the babies too. We'll arrange another day soon for the dogs to play. (Then hire a dog field 😂😂)

justco · 25/06/2023 10:56

I think it's fine, I'd be happy with this. People don't want to leave their dogs at home alone all the time especially at the weekend, as this is probably their time with their dog

DeflatedAgain · 25/06/2023 10:56

Oh it's tough. I love watching dogs playing together, but you're right it'll be too hot for them. I think it's wise they stay at home.

Womencanlift · 25/06/2023 10:56

I wouldn’t let dogs in my home or garden full stop so it would be a no from me.

If they start saying oh well it means we can’t come, your response should be ah well that’s a shame, maybe next time

RagzRebooted · 25/06/2023 10:56

Sounds dangerous, just say no.

plantsandwich · 25/06/2023 10:57

No, that sounds like it will be really stressful. And It's too hot for them.

CornedBeef451 · 25/06/2023 10:57

It's weird people think it's ok to take their dog to other people's houses. I have never, and will never, have a dog in my house or garden.

I have friends with dogs, happy to go for a walk with them but they wouldn't dream of asking to bring them here and they did I'd say no.

StephanieSuperpowers · 25/06/2023 10:57

Why are people so keen to foist their dogs on other people uninvited?

Shinyandnew1 · 25/06/2023 10:58

They can ask, you can say no!

LlynTegid · 25/06/2023 10:58

If you had no dogs and it was just one or two, and you knew how the owners looked after them, I think yes would be reasonable.

Given the number, reasonable to say no. Good that they had the decency to ask, I'm not sure everyone would have done.

Rainrainstayawaytilseptember · 25/06/2023 10:58

No sorry the dc will be playing and we can't supervise and host..
Food, dc and ddogs and possibly alcohol (?) def don't mix...
Cfers you have op.

yogasaurus · 25/06/2023 10:58

No, I hate when people ask this and we have dogs. SIL brings their cockapoo which is completely untrained and we have to move all the food out of his reach.

Just say, no, our dogs get anxious when other dogs come into their home, if you’d rather give an excuse

MadamWhiteleigh · 25/06/2023 10:58

Fine for them to ask, fine for you to say no

Can’t even spend one afternoon without the things.

@Colourfingers2

seriously 25 YEARS ago one dog had an accident in your house & you're still holding a grudge against ALL dogs.

I'd hate to think how you are with anyone deliberately doing something you don't approve of.

Sunnysunbun · 25/06/2023 10:59

I wouldn't leave my dog at home with windows closed soi just wouldn't come. The

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 25/06/2023 11:00

I have two dogs who are both rescues and can be a bit grumbly with other dogs so I’d say no but accept that people might not be able to stay for as long as I’d/they’d like if they needed to get back to the other dogs

SomePeopleAreNice · 25/06/2023 11:01

There is nothing wrong with them asking but nothing wrong with you saying no!

A pp's suggestion of "no, no dogs this time - it’s 29 degrees so we’re keeping ours inside - too hot and too much to manage with the BBQ and the kids. Thanks and see you at 3". Is good but you don't need to give any reason. Sometimes it's simpler to give a straightforward no.
