…. If they can’t read the full thread before bloody commenting???

Lightheaded (but also slightly serious lol)

grrr! I know it’s a mistake and at times difficult to read a long thread and all the comments, but why do people not bother properly reading the OPs comments or at least their first post before commenting something they’ve already said?

I’ve noticed it so often recently! The OP could make a post saying they are 30 years old. And there will be a number of comments asking how old they are. Or the OP could say they have a German shepherd. Cue 10 comments asking what breed the dog is. There’s actually a thread I just saw where the OP mentions antihistamines they’ve been taking and they mention the exact name of them. ITS IN THE OP. To which someone comments on the first page saying that it’s not clear if the OP is taking any antihistamines or not? 🤦🏽‍♀️

it’s happened on some of my posts where at least 30% of comments are people asking things that are IN THE OP and another 30% of comments are people telling them to read the OP.

i appreciate that people are only trying to help, but if they can’t be bothered to properly read the OP before commenting then it’s actually more unhelpful not to mention incredibly frustrating to have several comments that are questioning, suggesting or criticising things that are in the OP already

so I suppose my AIBU is, AIBU to get so frustrated by this??? Does anyone else?? 😆

[Hands over a paper bag to OP]

Breathe.

OK.

YANBU. I would add the bumpers of ancient threads to your banhammer list.

VapeHelp · 19/06/2023 15:17

Mumsnet could help by making the “read all OP posts” button a lot bigger, or like an auto signature on an email so it’s completely unmissable.

Or, make people do a test before they’re allowed to post. Get their Mumsnet licence, as it were.

I agree though, bloody irritating.

CruCru · 19/06/2023 15:20

Yeah, I agree actually. So many people can’t be arsed to read a five line OP.

randomchap · 19/06/2023 15:22

Didn't read the full op but banning people seems extreme

Florissante · 19/06/2023 15:24

YANBU.

Not everyone has a functioning short term memory and so will forget what they read. Not everyone has English as their first language and so may not pick up on subtle hints or subtext. So I think YABU and a bit ableist and Anglo-centric.

OneMoreCookieMonster · 19/06/2023 15:28

Sorry, I didn't want to read and run. But, what is your abiu?

(Fucking hate that comment...it's often blatantly obvious what it actually is!) I agree with you op. Although, I have been caught up in a cross post situation a time or two

oh don’t be ridiculous it’s nothing to do with ableist or Anglo-centric.

How is it a ‘subtle hint or subtext’ when an OP blatantly says

‘my car is red’

and then people will still say, what colour is your car?

Urgh yes I completely agree! Why bother to comment at all if you can’t be bothered to read fully what you’re commenting about!

I agree with you. The lack of ability to read, retain and comprehend what is actually written in the OP is bonkers.

ClareBlue · 19/06/2023 15:31

Are you being light hearted or serious, or a bit of both?

QueenofKattegat · 19/06/2023 15:35

I would also like to ban people who are so completely desperate to bash their opinion out that they don't read the updates. FFS you can even filter to just see the OPs posts so there's no excuse to jump in at page 28 and say "A&E. NOW".

Obviously “my car is red” isn’t subtle, but in the hayfever thread you mentioned the Op used ‘AH’ to mean antihistamines. Too, drug names are not the same in every country, so “fexofenadine” is known by “Allegra” in the US and even different names in nonEnglish speaking countries. Similar with inhalers- salbutamol here is ventolin in the US..and yet another name in nonEnglish speaking countries. So you’re assuming that everyone cottoned on to ‘AH’ and ‘fexofenadine’ when that is really Anglo-centric.

Too, some OPs are quite long and if a person has cognitive impairments, they won’t remember everything in the OP. So to assume everyone can remember everything they read is ableist.

Onefootinthegroove · 19/06/2023 15:36

@Grrrrrrr456 I actually think some posters do this on purpose. It comes across as to me as a type of trolling .

EnthENd · 19/06/2023 15:36

YABVVU. Posted without reading thread.

Well luckily there’s no memory needed and the posts don’t disappear and can be re read before commenting.

and if you don’t know what AH stands for then surely you wouldn’t simply google ‘Fexofenadine’ before commenting.

I agree. Also so annoying, an opening post on a thread, loads of responses, then zilch from the OP.

I completely agree! MN should have an option to report and remove these comments because it’s pointless and in some threads can be nasty eg when the poster has realised they are being UR and in the wrong and have apologised on page 5 and everyone has moved on, but then on page 10 someone will start telling them how awful they are and sticking the knife in all over again.

Or, and I’m speaking as someone who falls into that category myself, people could just not post if they don’t get what’s going on? I just click away if the post is too long for me.

Sigmama · 19/06/2023 15:41

I get equally annoyed by people who complain about people not rtft properly. This is a public forum, you are not the thread police, just scroll on. Job done.

🤣🤣🤣 Love it!

YANBU OP

Although it also annoys me when OPs don't but very basic info in their opening post, like how old their kids are for example as it's nearly always relevant.

Even worse when they don't come back for hours and then announce that said child is a teenager, but most people have given advice based on a much younger child.

wisteriasmoke · 19/06/2023 15:43

To be fair, most posters on MN will at least skim through the OP before posting, whereas many on another site I frequent typically do not even make it past the thread's title! Yes, the bar is in hell.

purpleboy · 19/06/2023 15:43

There's a thread about the company school blazer, op is specifically asking from those who use it and how much they pay so she can form a complaint, que 47 replies from people who don't use it.

Or the child free board where a poster asked what those without children do in their will, que 400 responses from those with kids saying they leave everything to them.

On my good days I can just laugh, but if I'm in a bad mood, it makes me incredibly angry 🤦🏽‍♀️

bluelavender · 19/06/2023 15:45

I would like there to be a 'best advice' button. Kind of like a 'like' but to be used where something agrees strongly with a post; and thinks that it offers excellent advice to the topic that the OP has asked for input on
