…. If they can’t read the full thread before bloody commenting???

Lightheaded (but also slightly serious lol)

grrr! I know it’s a mistake and at times difficult to read a long thread and all the comments, but why do people not bother properly reading the OPs comments or at least their first post before commenting something they’ve already said?

I’ve noticed it so often recently! The OP could make a post saying they are 30 years old. And there will be a number of comments asking how old they are. Or the OP could say they have a German shepherd. Cue 10 comments asking what breed the dog is. There’s actually a thread I just saw where the OP mentions antihistamines they’ve been taking and they mention the exact name of them. ITS IN THE OP. To which someone comments on the first page saying that it’s not clear if the OP is taking any antihistamines or not? 🤦🏽‍♀️

it’s happened on some of my posts where at least 30% of comments are people asking things that are IN THE OP and another 30% of comments are people telling them to read the OP.

i appreciate that people are only trying to help, but if they can’t be bothered to properly read the OP before commenting then it’s actually more unhelpful not to mention incredibly frustrating to have several comments that are questioning, suggesting or criticising things that are in the OP already

so I suppose my AIBU is, AIBU to get so frustrated by this??? Does anyone else?? 😆

Yes.

That and resurrecting the zombie threads.

I'm not sure if this is intentionally hilarious but 😂 if it's serious do you say things like this out loud in real life? How do people react?

I genuinely thought it was a funny/sarcastic post but now I'm not so sure 😳🤷‍♀️

Still funny though 🤣🤣

tolerable · 19/06/2023 16:38

@nothingcomestonothing i can live with you thinking its arrogant. Thats the "real life"manner that i do aibu. iamnotyou
I pretty much highlighted my recognition that there are serious issues.didnt you read that bit? I said I came as a form of entertainment.. not necessarily to laugh.. sharing concerns, issues, advice and opinions and learning that of others surely qualifies?
i think.you sound arrogant speaking for the majority of mumsnet users just because you misinterpreted my wording.but thats ok.

Trex6 · 19/06/2023 16:38

Yabu

What was the question?

midsomermurderess · 19/06/2023 16:39

OrcasFree · 19/06/2023 16:34

No they're not. Would be lovely though which is the point of the OP.

What point are you making?

The point I am making? You, solemnly saying banning posters for these irritating things couldn’t be implemented. Si, claro. Most of this is tongue-in-cheek. I don’t think anyone is, in all seriousness, advocating banning. That is my point.

UsingChangeofName · 19/06/2023 16:41

YANBU. I would add the bumpers of ancient threads to your banhammer list.

100%

rampagingrobot · 19/06/2023 16:41

I think people should be banned for posting clickbait titles without explaining what their thread is actually going to be about.

‘superior cuntery’. Give over, you pranny.

EyelessArseFace · 19/06/2023 16:49

I started a thread about something the other day under a different username. Asked advice about something holiday-related, had a few replies and then someone suggested I do X. So I posted explaining that there was no point in doing X because Y <totally sensible reason why not>.

Several more comments, all telling me 'yeah definitely do X'.

RTFT folks.

blueshoes · 19/06/2023 16:52

OP, YANBU. There is a lot of stupid out there.

As a lawyer, I can tell that a distressing number of people don't read anything and if they did, have such a poor level of comprehension of plain English I wonder if their first language is English. Even ChatGPT cannot help such people.

You do you then. I'll confess I found your post somewhat hard to read so no I didn't get that you were saying that you recognised that posters post about serious issues, I thought you were saying MN is just a form of entertainment so no need to read what others have posted before adding your opinion.

I don't claim to speak for MN users as a whole but I do think that adding your comments without looking to see if other people have said the same thing already is arrogant. People come onto threads 20 pages long sometimes and suggest something which has been suggested multiple times already, like their take is so red hot no one will have thought of it already. 'Cancel the cheque ' is a MN meme for a reason.

I get equally annoyed by people who complain about people not rtft properly. This is a public forum, you are not the thread police, just scroll on. Job done.

There was a thread here a couple days ago. OP gave the most minimal info in the first post and dropped little tidbits with every post.

PP's were screaming 'RTFT!!!' but hey who wants to read though 16 posts to put it all together?

It doesn't even have to be ancient. Someone said 'well it was only posted 4 months ago!' When I called a zombie thread.

Yes and there have been no updates or replies since February. It's dead.

Sigmama · 19/06/2023 16:59

Literally how many seconds does it take to scroll on?

Ofcourseididthat · 19/06/2023 16:59

I had a moan recently about toddler DS having a tantrum when I stop putting sun cream on him. Post after post offering me advice on how to get sun cream on a toddler. Grr.

The worst is when people don’t read year groups / ages. Someone posts their Y6 child was walking home from school and <event> and gets post after post ‘you let your six year old walk home alone?’

Sigmama · 19/06/2023 17:03

Ofcourse - not everyone is school savvy and knows what y6 means, no need to get annoyed

Grrrrrrr456 · 19/06/2023 17:04

Sigmama · 19/06/2023 16:59

Literally how many seconds does it take to scroll on?

put it this way; when the majority of your thread is taken up with people making stupid suggestions that have already been covered in the OP, it’s a waste of everybody’s time and effort

OP posts:
Ofcourseididthat · 19/06/2023 17:07

Sigmama · 19/06/2023 17:03

Ofcourse - not everyone is school savvy and knows what y6 means, no need to get annoyed

But that is different to deciding that the child is six years old.

It's so annoying when people accuse OP of not giving them the right information and it is right there in their opening post. I'm not perfect with grammar etc but I can understand the frustration when people skim, get the wrong end of the stick and just jump in with useless comments that are often very accusatory in nature as with the above example.

Sigmama · 19/06/2023 17:09

Op, time and effort? Surely it's minimal?

LinMortisanass · 19/06/2023 17:09

I know what you mean OP. But there are stupid and irritating people everywhere so I think we just have to accept they will be on MN too, and get on with it. What can they really be banned for? Being stupid and irritating?

Sigmama · 19/06/2023 17:10

Of courseididthat, I just scroll on through those posts,no big deal

saltinesandcoffeecups · 19/06/2023 17:10

I’m not sure about banned but maybe an automatic ’shun’ symbol prominently displayed that can be removed with a reading comprehension test. Maybe based on a point system like driving infractions and drivers courses 🤣

Sigmama · 19/06/2023 17:11

It's all a bit bossy, just let people be

L3ThirtySeven · 19/06/2023 15:36

Obviously “my car is red” isn’t subtle, but in the hayfever thread you mentioned the Op used ‘AH’ to mean antihistamines. Too, drug names are not the same in every country, so “fexofenadine” is known by “Allegra” in the US and even different names in nonEnglish speaking countries. Similar with inhalers- salbutamol here is ventolin in the US..and yet another name in nonEnglish speaking countries. So you’re assuming that everyone cottoned on to ‘AH’ and ‘fexofenadine’ when that is really Anglo-centric.

Too, some OPs are quite long and if a person has cognitive impairments, they won’t remember everything in the OP. So to assume everyone can remember everything they read is ableist.

But this is simply wrong. Fexofenadine is the drug's actual name. Allegra is the name of the fexofenadine which is sold over the counter rather than on prescription. It may well have different trade names, but it will still be fexofenadine. The best known example of this is ibuprofen - sold under many names, the best known being nurofen, but it's still ibuprofen. Ditto salbutamol & Ventolin.
(I do agree that AH is a bit vague & I work in the industry & take antihistamines)
