…. If they can’t read the full thread before bloody commenting???

Lightheaded (but also slightly serious lol)

grrr! I know it’s a mistake and at times difficult to read a long thread and all the comments, but why do people not bother properly reading the OPs comments or at least their first post before commenting something they’ve already said?

I’ve noticed it so often recently! The OP could make a post saying they are 30 years old. And there will be a number of comments asking how old they are. Or the OP could say they have a German shepherd. Cue 10 comments asking what breed the dog is. There’s actually a thread I just saw where the OP mentions antihistamines they’ve been taking and they mention the exact name of them. ITS IN THE OP. To which someone comments on the first page saying that it’s not clear if the OP is taking any antihistamines or not? 🤦🏽‍♀️

it’s happened on some of my posts where at least 30% of comments are people asking things that are IN THE OP and another 30% of comments are people telling them to read the OP.

i appreciate that people are only trying to help, but if they can’t be bothered to properly read the OP before commenting then it’s actually more unhelpful not to mention incredibly frustrating to have several comments that are questioning, suggesting or criticising things that are in the OP already

so I suppose my AIBU is, AIBU to get so frustrated by this??? Does anyone else?? 😆

There was a thread here a couple days ago. OP gave the most minimal info in the first post and dropped little tidbits with every post.

PP's were screaming 'RTFT!!!' but hey who wants to read though 16 posts to put it all together?

Sixteen! Oh no! However would they cope! They'd need a lie down after all that reading.

To answer your question: someone who's more interested in whether their reply is relevant than some fun internet grandstanding.

@nothingcomestonothing .its probably me being dim. but yeah,ok

PuppyMonkey · 19/06/2023 19:11

Well I for one did read the OP properly and I can’t help wondering why she was lightheaded.Grin

rookiemere · 19/06/2023 19:13

If you haven't got time to read the whole thread, at least read the OPs updates. Or indeed if you haven't got time to read a whole thread - here's a novel idea - don't waste your time posting on it. Bemuses me when people wade in to a 500+ days old thread to say " I haven't read the whole thread because I am very busy and important , but my advice is to <spends 3 paragraphs listing something that was discounted by OP in her second post>.

My other bug bear is people from England who don't put in the age of their children, but instead what school year they are in. I live in Scotland and have zero idea what age a Year 11 may be for example.

Not sure why you want to ban people. There are mods who can look through posts that are offensive. Are there reasons to want people banned OP ?

islandofserenity · 19/06/2023 19:24

I totally agree . I've been on Mumsnet for years but only started posting 2 weeks ago. A poster told me [ in a private message} to get ducked! she was repeatedly horrible to me. I'VE suffered with depression from being a teenager but have felt great these last few months BUT the more this poster had a go at me, the lower I FELT. i Asked mumsnet to repeatedly close the thread. They did but it took a couple of days. MY motto is " be kind to people, you don't know what they're going through" This poster shocked me and I thought I WAS unshockable.
Excuse typos, I'm using my daughter's laptop.

"I'm not reading 23 pages of comments as can't be bothered with all that, but even though I haven't bothered to read what other strangers have said, I nevertheless assume that everybody is clamouring to read what this stranger has to add to a thread that they already consider too long for anybody to be expected to read... which is exactly the same as 128 PPs have already said, as it's kind of an obvious thing to say, really."

One of the saddest ones was where a dearly loved 'senior' MNer who was terminally ill had started a thread asking about suggestions as to how to make the most of a trip to Anglesey - a place that was on her bucket list, as she'd never had chance to go there before.

One of her friends later posted an update to her thread, with the very sad news that people had been expecting but nevertheless dreading. Needless to say, she never got to go to Anglesey.

Along with the many messages of condolences, paying respects and sharing of happy and poignant memories of her, there were still people who waded right in to an old thread, without even reading BOF's OP, which made it extremely clear how ill she was, seeing the date and maybe treading carefully - and giving lots of holiday tips and wishing her a wonderful time when she went there.

In the end, MN had to add a big notice to the OP, to tell people to RTFT before posting - but, as always, signs and notices are usually ignored by everybody except those who were wise/respectful/careful enough not to need them in the first place.

It’s not about your ‘literary capacities’, your style is very distracting and whether you like it or not, it makes it hard to read and to glean what you’re saying. It’s like you’re sabotaging your ability to communicate clearly. People will just switch off, move on.

I agree. I'm scrolling past those posts as they're too much effort for too little reward.

This, in a nutshell.

JenniferBarkley · 19/06/2023 20:37

I remember that one @FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper . Another similar one was a poster who opened a thread with symptoms of bloating and abdominal discomfort and was quickly diagnosed with ovarian cancer which proved terminal. The thread documented her treatment and final days and was a very touching read, her love for her daughters shone through.

But every twenty or so posts someone would respond to the OP from several months before to suggest coeliac or IBS.

CruCru · 20/06/2023 12:16

MN is a UK site - so it will be Anglo-centric. It’s also somewhere where the users tend to be far more well educated than the general population. OPs with very poor written English tend to either get picked apart (which can get unpleasant) or ignored.

A thread where a third to a half of posters haven’t actually read the OP gets boring fairly quickly.

CruCru · 20/06/2023 13:54

I suspect that much of it is people answering the question they wanted to be asked, rather than what they were actually asked.

OP: I can’t drive and really want to live in London zone 1. I need a lift as I am disabled and have a sensible amount of money to buy a central London flat.

Bunch of posters: Send ads for large, multi storey houses with rambling gardens in a remote part of the UK. Yes, they are the same price as a nice two bedroom in Euston … but there’s no way the OP would be able to live there.

Haha. This post perfectly illustrates what the op is getting at. 😆

It currently isn't and sometimes the app doesn't load all pages either. I have been caught out by that before
