…. If they can’t read the full thread before bloody commenting???

Lightheaded (but also slightly serious lol)

grrr! I know it’s a mistake and at times difficult to read a long thread and all the comments, but why do people not bother properly reading the OPs comments or at least their first post before commenting something they’ve already said?

I’ve noticed it so often recently! The OP could make a post saying they are 30 years old. And there will be a number of comments asking how old they are. Or the OP could say they have a German shepherd. Cue 10 comments asking what breed the dog is. There’s actually a thread I just saw where the OP mentions antihistamines they’ve been taking and they mention the exact name of them. ITS IN THE OP. To which someone comments on the first page saying that it’s not clear if the OP is taking any antihistamines or not? 🤦🏽‍♀️

it’s happened on some of my posts where at least 30% of comments are people asking things that are IN THE OP and another 30% of comments are people telling them to read the OP.

i appreciate that people are only trying to help, but if they can’t be bothered to properly read the OP before commenting then it’s actually more unhelpful not to mention incredibly frustrating to have several comments that are questioning, suggesting or criticising things that are in the OP already

so I suppose my AIBU is, AIBU to get so frustrated by this??? Does anyone else?? 😆

Tbf, OPs often drip feed info over 10 pages. No one is reading all that, surely, just on the off chance that they might be able to pick up all the facts - some of which often contradict.

Then the choice is either to engage with the thread or, if you find it too verbose/irritating/boring to hold your interest, to abandon it and find another one instead.

How does it help anybody if you listen in with half an ear and just fire random thoughts, opinions or advice that are irrelevant to where the thread is? What do you get personally from knowing you're advising somebody on a problem that they don't have or discussing a different topic from everybody else on the thread?

If you did that in real life, people would be worrying about your sanity and/or assuming you were being deliberately rude and passive aggressive - especially if you were the one who had originally decided to join the conversation, when you could very easily have known what participation would involve and been entirely free not to engage at all.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 20/06/2023 23:00

Some people remind me of the people who choose to watch the same TV programmes every week and complain every week that they don't like it!

Not a single thread on MN is compulsory to read or participate in; neither is being on MN at all, if you don't want to for whatever reason. It's easy enough to waste too much time just on a select number of threads that DO interest you, without straying into countless others that don't.

I don't always read every post in a thread stretching over 15+ pages, no, but the least you can do is read the OP's posts.

LittleBearPad · 20/06/2023 18:46

People access threads from active.

They assume they are current and that the OP is looking at the thread.

They don’t read the dates.

They spend time reading a potentially long thread, they go to add their thoughts, they realise that the threads two year old, the OP’s challenges with sleeping or breastfeeding for example are unlikely to be an issue anymore and that the thread is in active because you’ve been fannying about with old threads.

Stop it!

Agree. Anyone knowingly bumping Zombie threads is annoying. The OP rarely if ever comes back to update and no advice posted is ever not covered in the answers already posted.

Oysterbabe · 21/06/2023 06:35

Similarly, you should have to fill in a form or something with key details before posting a thread.

'AIBU to leave my child alone while I go to the shop?'
'AIBU to let my child go to bed when they want?'
'AIBU to bathe my children together?'
Etc etc

HOW OLD IS THE CHILD? The amount of posts I see where the first page of responses is 'How old is DC?' The age is always relevant.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 21/06/2023 11:11

Reverses should also get their owners banned. Exceptionally annoying.

KeyboardMash · 21/06/2023 11:19

Grrrrrrr456 · 19/06/2023 15:40

I completely agree! MN should have an option to report and remove these comments because it’s pointless and in some threads can be nasty eg when the poster has realised they are being UR and in the wrong and have apologised on page 5 and everyone has moved on, but then on page 10 someone will start telling them how awful they are and sticking the knife in all over again.

This is the one that I hate! It's like people form their very strong opinion whilst reading the OP, and they absolutely have to explain what a dreadful person the OP is - and the fact that they've already conceded the point quite graciously must not get in the way of this.

DdraigGoch · 21/06/2023 11:22

Yes, you should LTB. Get your ducks in a row, paint your car a neutral colour and cancel the cheque. Once you've done that, get your border collie to A&E NOW! Oh, and my hayfever was fine yesterday despite forgetting to take any tablets.

Now what was this thread about?

I am loving the idea of filling in a form before starting a thread Grin

Yes - the OP is an actual human with many facets to their character, beliefs, way of thinking, experiences; and hopefully, the fact that they have started a thread means they want to discuss it and seek out other people's thoughts and opinions - although you do get some who just want an echo chamber and tell MNHQ anything to get it deleted if that doesn't happen.

Far too many posters just want an OP who is a simple pantomime hero or villain - somebody who can be compartmentalised neatly into a 'goodie' or a 'baddie' and 'rewarded' or 'punished' accordingly.

It would be great! Unfortunately, forms are often like signs and notices: the people who necessitate them ignore or fill in any old thing; the only people who observe and comply properly are those for whom they were never needed in the first place.

It should be compulsory, on baby names threads, to tell people the first letter and number of syllables in your surname.

MyWishIsMyCommand · 21/06/2023 14:11

I think people who make clickbait titles should be banned (lighthearted but serious too).

I mean... you can just read OP's posts all in one go? You don't have to sift through ten pages or whatever.

I don't get the point in commenting when you know you might not have all the info that's available.

You can't on the app unless you scroll through the whole thing

That's why I use the browser version. Because I don't see the point in making myself look like a tit for commenting while ignoring half the available information.

(leaving aside the weirdness of having an app with worse functionality than the web version... that's a different thread!)

Agreed, I don’t understand using the App. The website on a phone works fine.

Didn't read the full op but banning people seems extreme

😉😂

Scalottia · 22/06/2023 08:28

YANBU OP.

I would like to ban people who QUOTE THE OP! It's the OP, you don't need to quote it - it's the subject of the whole bloody thread!

Now I'm off to RTFT. 😉

IglesiasPiggl · 22/06/2023 08:46

I am finding more and more that I prefer specific interest online groups to MN, partly for this reason. Why people come onto a thread ten pages in only to suggest something blindingly obvious that's already been discussed on page 1, I will never know.

LittleBearPad · 22/06/2023 08:02

My weirdness is more directed at MNHQ - why bother making an app if it doesn't work as well as the browser version?

Ooooh, I am so with you there. Even worse, when the very first person to reply does it; just why?!

AlyssumandHelianthus · 22/06/2023 11:42

Yes, I do think we should get rid of people from MN. People are shit. Not read the OP but assume this is what you mean?

bringincrazyback · 22/06/2023 11:44

AmbleInAnnBoleyn · 19/06/2023 15:16

[Hands over a paper bag to OP]

Breathe.

OK.

YANBU. I would add the bumpers of ancient threads to your banhammer list.

I think the old threads bumping depends on context really. If it's about someone having a specific issue: pointless. But if it's a discussion of a more abstract topic that doesn't 'date' so to speak, where's the harm in letting more people see/comment on it?

ArtixLynx · 22/06/2023 11:47

i'd like to ban people who have ZERO experience of something from handing out advice that ends up being a complete load of bollocks because they have no idea what they're talking about.
