…. If they can’t read the full thread before bloody commenting???

Lightheaded (but also slightly serious lol)

grrr! I know it’s a mistake and at times difficult to read a long thread and all the comments, but why do people not bother properly reading the OPs comments or at least their first post before commenting something they’ve already said?

I’ve noticed it so often recently! The OP could make a post saying they are 30 years old. And there will be a number of comments asking how old they are. Or the OP could say they have a German shepherd. Cue 10 comments asking what breed the dog is. There’s actually a thread I just saw where the OP mentions antihistamines they’ve been taking and they mention the exact name of them. ITS IN THE OP. To which someone comments on the first page saying that it’s not clear if the OP is taking any antihistamines or not? 🤦🏽‍♀️

it’s happened on some of my posts where at least 30% of comments are people asking things that are IN THE OP and another 30% of comments are people telling them to read the OP.

i appreciate that people are only trying to help, but if they can’t be bothered to properly read the OP before commenting then it’s actually more unhelpful not to mention incredibly frustrating to have several comments that are questioning, suggesting or criticising things that are in the OP already

so I suppose my AIBU is, AIBU to get so frustrated by this??? Does anyone else?? 😆

What about when they don’t read the op before posting. That’s really annoying.

MooseBreath · 19/06/2023 15:48

Some threads are stupidly long, so RTFT is a bit much to ask. I think people should read the OP fully and any follow-up posts by the OP. It is very annoying when posters ask questions that have already been clearly answered.

midsomermurderess · 19/06/2023 15:51

QueenofKattegat · 19/06/2023 15:35

I would also like to ban people who are so completely desperate to bash their opinion out that they don't read the updates. FFS you can even filter to just see the OPs posts so there's no excuse to jump in at page 28 and say "A&E. NOW".

100 times yes. But ‘I think…’ is the most important thing of all, even if almost every poster before you has said the same thing.

And the ones who turn up on a thread to say ‘never heard of it’ deserve a special MN holding cell. They’re incapable of thinking, ‘guess this thread just isn’t for me’.

nothingcomestonothing · 19/06/2023 15:52

Too, some OPs are quite long and if a person has cognitive impairments, they won’t remember everything in the OP. So to assume everyone can remember everything they read is ableist.

Give over, ableist. There's no need to remember everything, the OP is there, at the top of the thread, for handy reference.

If a reader can't remember what the OP was asking about, why would that reader think that their input is going to be useful?

midsomermurderess · 19/06/2023 15:53

L3ThirtySeven · 19/06/2023 15:27

Not everyone has a functioning short term memory and so will forget what they read. Not everyone has English as their first language and so may not pick up on subtle hints or subtext. So I think YABU and a bit ableist and Anglo-centric.

And as for this, give over.

JenniferBarkley · 19/06/2023 15:53

YANBU OP. See also quoting the OP.

latetothefisting · 19/06/2023 15:56

I agree
It's my mn pet peeve

I swear I spent about 11 years in school doing gradually more complicated "reading comprehension" of set texts - I thought this was a national thing but reading mn made me start to think it was only my school that did it!

I can just about understand if people don't read subsequent posts by the OP -if you're not signed in its not always easy to see them all

But there is no excuse at all for not properly reading the opening paragraph.

There's a thread going now where op is asking if it was U of a restaurant to give her table away. Loads of posts saying it was her fault for leaving late when her post specifically said she left at least 20 minutes early!

I've made a post - very short literally jist asking for recommendations for a particular product, but not x brand because I've already tried that.
Guess what? Several responses suggesting x brand!

It's both arrogant - the compulsive need to jump in to share your amazing response whether it's actually relevant or not - and in many cases unnecessarily aggressive because the poster is so keen to give the op a kicking they don't even bother checking what's actually happened.

NotTerfNorCis · 19/06/2023 15:59

Not had time to read the OP. What is this thread about?😉

Eckyftang · 19/06/2023 16:00

YANBU

There are still a few threads still going where the OP checked out pages ago.

There's a phenomenal amount of sticks being grabbed at the wrong end. Hilariously so.

Humidititties · 19/06/2023 16:00

Can I add to list those who quote the entire opening post when replying, especially if it's a long post. Just why?

yabu.its a chat forum. no iq test required.
not a english assignment. If and when i comment -i rarely read others advice first.
thats not how i play it. -ie - tho can be serious issues at times, and learning is always possible it is a form of entertainment so dont get so het up maybe.cant you just scan read replies?or use read all by op....

We're definitely not talking about subtle hints here, we're talking about not bothering to read things that are very clear. There's a thread today where a father is accused of not wanting his son with him on a holiday, when the OP spells out the fact the father asked the son, the son has said no because he will be working.

Quiverer · 19/06/2023 16:11

That example I quoted points up the factor that makes it extra annoying - it's bad enough not reading the OP's posts properly, but it's really not acceptable when you then to on to use your misreading of the post to beat her or someone else up. If you are going to criticise, have the grace to double check that you've got your facts right.

InTodaysNews · 19/06/2023 16:13

What was the question again op? 😉

I think it's arrogant to comment without reading first. What the point of you saying 'have you tried blw?' when five people have already posted that and OP has said it didn't work for her?

And although some posts are light hearted, some are not and I don't think the majority of posters are seeing MN as a form of entertainment. if I start a thread it's not because I want to amuse you, it's because I'm looking for advice or info or help or solidarity. Posts are (we assume) about the OPs real life.

LaMaG · 19/06/2023 16:23

Grrrrrrr456 · 19/06/2023 15:28

oh don’t be ridiculous it’s nothing to do with ableist or Anglo-centric.

How is it a ‘subtle hint or subtext’ when an OP blatantly says

‘my car is red’

and then people will still say, what colour is your car?

If someone has trouble understanding English and incapable of remembering a few sentences then they shouldn't be on an English online forum, or certainly should not be posting replies on what they can't comprehend. Are you seriously saying articulate people are ableist? What next, I suppose the Guardian should be changed to reception level phonics.

OrcasFree · 19/06/2023 16:24

It has always been the case on MN. I don't even think it's lack of comprehension, it's just a social media thing where people don't read the whole thing before jumping in.

It would be lovely if they were banned but could not be implemented.

I agree it's f-ing annoying though. Particularly on threads which should have a light-hearted feel about them but mood-hoovers jump on to suck out the joy of everything.

Example - 80s kids, what are your best memories about toys or food in that decade?

Lots of normal answers but also more than one...

Answer - I was an abused child in the 80s, I was starving most of the time so didn't get a findus crispy pancake and my alcoholic Dad sold my Cabbage patch kid down the pub.

That's really sad obviously but also not the question and not the thread for you.

Then maybe a forum where people are asking for advice based on specific information isn't the forum they should be giving advice on?

I've literally seen posts on MN which are very clear and short like 'sandwich filler ideas? vegetarian, allergic to egg" and in the first few posts you'll see BLT and egg mayonnaise 🙄

midsomermurderess · 19/06/2023 16:29

‘It would be lovely if they were banned but could not be implemented.‘: no one is actually seriously suggesting banning.

I'm not sure if this is intentionally hilarious but 😂 if it's serious do you say things like this out loud in real life? How do people react?
