…. If they can’t read the full thread before bloody commenting???

Lightheaded (but also slightly serious lol)

grrr! I know it’s a mistake and at times difficult to read a long thread and all the comments, but why do people not bother properly reading the OPs comments or at least their first post before commenting something they’ve already said?

I’ve noticed it so often recently! The OP could make a post saying they are 30 years old. And there will be a number of comments asking how old they are. Or the OP could say they have a German shepherd. Cue 10 comments asking what breed the dog is. There’s actually a thread I just saw where the OP mentions antihistamines they’ve been taking and they mention the exact name of them. ITS IN THE OP. To which someone comments on the first page saying that it’s not clear if the OP is taking any antihistamines or not? 🤦🏽‍♀️

it’s happened on some of my posts where at least 30% of comments are people asking things that are IN THE OP and another 30% of comments are people telling them to read the OP.

i appreciate that people are only trying to help, but if they can’t be bothered to properly read the OP before commenting then it’s actually more unhelpful not to mention incredibly frustrating to have several comments that are questioning, suggesting or criticising things that are in the OP already

so I suppose my AIBU is, AIBU to get so frustrated by this??? Does anyone else?? 😆

"Haven't read the thread, it's too long, but I think..."

Not everyone has a functioning short term memory and so will forget what they read. Not everyone has English as their first language and so may not pick up on subtle hints or subtext. So I think YABU and a bit ableist and Anglo-centric.

Oh for God's sake!

Too, some OPs are quite long and if a person has cognitive impairments, they won’t remember everything in the OP. So to assume everyone can remember everything they read is ableist.

Or, and I’m speaking as someone who falls into that category myself, people could just not post if they don’t get what’s going on? I just click away if the post is too long for me.

Exactly!

I am loving the idea of filling in a form before starting a thread

It would be great! Unfortunately, forms are often like signs and notices: the people who necessitate them ignore or fill in any old thing; the only people who observe and comply properly are those for whom they were never needed in the first place.

Agree with this completely!
I just feel Mumsnet should be quicker at banning people who are swearing at others, putting them down etc. On the Nicola Sturgeon thread, i was ripped to shreds! You've got to laugh otherwise you'd cry!!

"Haven't read the thread, it's too long, but I think..."

More like: "I haven't read the thread because I'm lazy but everyone needs my opinion anyway".

To be fair it's pretty much down to MNs lack of functionality. Compare it to newer Web boards and it's night and day.
