Listening to this ridiculous teacher today bullying two students, isn't it time that we started holding teachers responsible for indoctrinating children into thinking they can identify as anything they feel like?

How did we get to this point where kids are so afraid to speak up because of being bullied by classmates or even by teachers?

YABU - I identify as a cat
YANBU - teachers should face the legal consequences for encouraging children to identify out of their biological sex.

I don't think the teacher is just following guidelines. She sounds like she genuinely believes it. Which is worrying.

Oh good, another thread about all of this 🙄

Yeah let’s sweep wholesale misogyny in British classrooms under the carpet shall we eh? Women stfu.

TheSnootiestFox · 18/06/2023 08:52

I identity as a mid twenties supermodel married to Jack Grealish but biology I'm afraid confirms that I'm a lipoedemic 50 year old female and will always be a female. There are only 2 genders. The PPs son is right when he says you can wear what you want and chop bits off but you'll always be either male or female. To teach kids anything else is crackers and indeed factually incorrect.

TheHoover · 18/06/2023 08:56

I agree with those saying the problem is that teachers have clearly not been given guidance in how to deal with this. This teacher was absolutely floundering.

It must be an absolute minefield. The curriculum needs to reduce this to a minimum and teach that people have different, strong, highly charged views on this topic, that all views must be respected, to not use inflammatory language and then to move along quickly.

LakeTiticaca · 18/06/2023 09:01

Well done these kids. We need young invidiuals with strong minds who are not afraid to challenge this nonsense .
Keep it up kids and don't left them indoctrinate you!!

FourTeaFallOut · 18/06/2023 09:02

Is it a highly charged opinion to state that someone is not a cat? Can you move along quickly when your compliance to a falsehood is deemed mandatory?

towriteyoumustlive · 18/06/2023 09:03

I find the whole thing very worrying.

I'm in my mid 40s, and FEMALE. But... from primary school age onwards, I wore jeans, shorts, tshirts and had very short hair. I played football, my best friend was a boy, and people often mistook me for a boy.

I was exactly the sort of "candidate" that they would now be talking to about my gender, suggesting I could be a boy. It was a confusing time as a teenager, I knew I was attracted to both boys and girls, but I kept quiet about the girl bit as being gay/bisexual back then wasn't acceptable still!

But WTF?!? Why the hell does gender matter? (unless for having a baby obviously...). We have spent YEARS fighting for equal rights so that men and women have the same rights and gender is irrelevant, but now we have people saying you can change gender?! But WHY?!?! What does it matter? What actually is male or female other than your anatomy and hormone amounts? So why does it matter which one you belong to?

I feel grateful I was allowed to grow up just being me and not had this ridiculous pressure put on me.

The world has gone completely insane.

Respect that someone is cat gender?

Should we respect anorexia? Self harm? Bulimia? Religious extremism?

Where is the line drawn?

This gender religion is not harmless.

Listen carefully, it sounds as though the other student might have used identifying as a cat as an example - an interesting philosophical thought experiment and allows for debate around identity. I would really love to hear more from that student because they’ve thrown something interesting and funny into the debate rather than the students who are attempting to shut down the argument or the teacher who is mounting a half-arsed defence.

I like how Shapiro explains the intersex issue. 3 sexes? FFS. Hmm

NOTANUM · 18/06/2023 09:07

Can we have a call out for the schools that are getting this right?
One of my kids’ schools has a “let’s be kind” type of response - no lessons or assemblies on it other than as part of a wider LGBT curriculum, and they support the kids (1 or 2 in the school). DC can’t remember a teacher even talking about it in any other context. Frankly they’re too busy, well, teaching!

chosenone · 18/06/2023 09:09

I wish those kids were at my school. Very articulate.
I don’t have to teach genderwoo thankfully, but when it comes up with students, I’m still very ‘that’s nice dear, now move onto task 2’ We have to be very careful and need the guidance asap.

NOTANUM · 18/06/2023 09:10

Identifying as a cat is a thing - google it.

I do think some of this is going into mental health difficulties for sure.

VestaTilley · 18/06/2023 09:24

YANBU.

It shouldn’t be allowed to be taught as fact, because it’s not a fact, and there’s no such thing as innate gender identity.

MrsCarson · 18/06/2023 09:26

I met a social worker the other day through my work, who has pulled her kids from school and her Dh is SAHD and homeschooling due to all the gender woo crap as she put it.

Fairislefandango · 18/06/2023 09:28

If the teachers are following their own agenda, rather than what they have been directed to do by the school, then yes absolutely you should blame them. Otherwise you should blame the Head.

But agreeing with it is madness.
All my kids thought they were a cat, or a puppy at some point. It usually lasted till they got hungry and I refused to put food on the floor and told them cats/dogs aren't allowed people food and I would make something they loved and start eating.

AlisonDonut · 18/06/2023 09:30

Two teens unravel the gender woo nonsense and that's good.

Such a garbled nonsensical argument/catgender being valid/three sexes/both genitals/many genders/re-education - how are teachers supposed to respond when the heads have put them through this nonsense and paid no attention to what they are spouting?

I saw one response on twitter where a parent emailed a complaint to a head and the head responded [to them] in error saying 'X said there would be people like this who were trying to cause trouble'...we have more issues than just the teachers when the heads have fallen hook line and sinker for this crap and put any dissent down to 'causing trouble'. Everyone who objects' cards have already been marked.

Bunbuns3 · 18/06/2023 09:31

Not the teacher's fault. They would loose their job if they did not cover this. Lot's of teachers are not comfortable teaching such nonsense. The only way round this madness is to home School or attend a catholic school which will never teach such utter rubbish.

TroubleInSchool · 18/06/2023 09:34

I was called to the head's office on Friday for saying in the staffroom at lunchtime that sex is binary and women's spaces should be for women only.

He did say we are entitled to our own opinions but ended the conversation by checking I was NOT sharing this opinion with pupils....

I shut down all conversation in my classroom that turns to this topic - not least because the school employs a teacher who calls herself Mx. Surname that the pupils are quick to complain about.

Give over. She told the girls that if they don't like it then they need to go to a different school, that's not someone cow towing reluctantly to the script, that's frog marching the girls to silence

JemimaTiggywinkles · 18/06/2023 09:38

It shouldn’t be allowed to be taught as fact, because it’s not a fact, and there’s no such thing as innate gender identity.

This is exactly the problem. Schools are legally required to teach “the facts” about gender identity. If we ignore that requirement we are absolutely in the wrong. But “the facts” are unbelievably contentious and not at all agreed upon. Lots of people (including some MPs) are absolutely insistent that gender identity is real and to deny that is denying trans people’s right to exist. Regardless of how an individual school or teacher approaches this topic they are picking sides in a political debate and teaching that side to children. Which we are not allowed to do.

Teachers cannot win here, we’ve been put in a catch-22 situation.

MrsMcisaCt · 18/06/2023 09:38

EVHead · 18/06/2023 07:21

I don’t blame the teachers - they can’t pick and choose which bits of the curriculum to teach.

Blame those further up.

Exactly. I don't choose what to teach. I'm told what to teach.

FourTeaFallOut · 18/06/2023 09:44

And are you compelled to tell students that they are homophobic if they don't believe people can change sex or morph into cat identities? Are you compelled to threaten students with expulsion for not falling into line?

whereaw · 18/06/2023 09:51

There is sticking to the guidelines, such as using words like 'uterus haver's' and 'people who menstruate' (which is bad enough and the reason my good friend left the profession). This is not that. The teacher is not only misguided but dangerous in her thinking and what she is telling students.

whereaw · 18/06/2023 09:57

Have I got this right, and I hope I have not.
This conversation ensued as a result of a fellow student identifying as a cat? And the other students said a person cannot be a cat?
