To call neighbour and tell them to come home from work?

And let their sodding dog in?

Think terraced house, very small garden, one end has shade, so neighbour has sodded off to work and left their bloody yappy dog shut in the garden for the day!!! It has been barking for 2 hours now!! Aaaaaaaargh!!

Not really @WeAreTheHeroes since the situation has been resolved without either agency getting involved. In my experience of complaining to both the RSPCA and my local council in this exact situation, neither had any fucks to give. And when I asked my neighbour to please consider both their neighbours and the dogs' welfare I got the door slammed in my face and a subsequent visit from the very angry (and drunk!) husband. Is that constructive enough for you? 😳

Movinghouseatlast · 13/06/2023 10:00

Call the RSPCA. They don't deserve to have a dog, they are being very cruel.

It is about 27 degrees outside today. Dogs need to be indoors with a cool mat. Definitely call the RSPCA.

FrostyFifi · 13/06/2023 14:30

Did she just go to work and leave the back door unlocked then?

caringcarer · 13/06/2023 14:33

Right do she read the message and not responded. I'd send another message saying you are getting very worried for dogs safety in this heat and YOU had to give it water and if she doesn't respond in 30 mins you are going to have to ring RSPCA for advice. See if it gets her home to bring it in the house.

caringcarer · 13/06/2023 14:35

Just read your update OP. I'd be reporting her if it happened again.

Skinnermarink · 13/06/2023 14:36

What a stroke of luck that you had full access to their garden and house via an unlocked back door!

LocalHobo · 13/06/2023 15:07

OP good on you for putting out some water. Your neighbour sounds like an idiot, but most dogs will be okay if there's shade and enough water. (Depending on the breed and health of the dog).

Leaving a dog outside with adequate shade and water is not comparable to leaving a dog in a car on a hot day.
The RSPCA website states; "dogs should always be able to move where they feel more comfortable, away from direct sunlight and into the shade. Constant access to clean drinking water is necessary."
That doesn't give the impression they would be concerned with the neighbours dog.

Astonishing

You think every single person here is feigning concern? Idiocy. There's no point of view of yours to understand, it's just idiocy.

I'd call it a culture shock at Brits and their pets rather than idiocy.

In most other European countries a dog is much more likely to have a garden and a small kennel/shed at their disposal than a cage (sorry, crate) whilst the owners are at work. And that's with a climate that sees cold winters and hot summers. I'm yet to see a dog suffer any harm. Cages (sorry, crates) are illegal though.

The cats are house pets - had one myself for happy and healthy 20 years. The few that do go outside are collared and/or chipped. The non-collared ones
get swooped up by the council as feral.

I suppose I could use the term "idiocy" in a tit for tat move. However, "strange" is fine by me. It's not the only one thing where the British are rather peculiar in their ways. The pet one I find really grating for some reason though!

Spot the mad doggy person.

Not her circus, not her monkeys. Or not her dog, to be precise. Why on earth would someone want a neighbour's dog in their house?

And yes, call them at work and get them home.

You wouldn’t intervene if a dog was in danger? So nice to know that there are people like you around in case my dogs ever need assistance. I’ve rescued several dogs and would happily look after them in my home.

steppemum · 13/06/2023 15:33

I am frankly baffled by some of the things on this thread.

I have a dog.
I have a garden.
Right now I am sitting in the house with the french doors onto the garden open and the back door open.

The dog is in the garden. The concrete that passes for a patio is in the shade. When the sun moves round there is a huge tree over grass in the shade. There is a garden pond which is his preferred drink anyway (hates drinking bowls)

If the doors were shut the inside of the house would be MUCH hotter than the garden.

Why do people assume that the garden is a no and the house is a yes?

I wouldn't leave my dog outside all day because he would bark at every street noise and drive everyone mad. And he would get bored and try to climb over the (6 foot) wall. But the garden is cooler and better on a hot day than a closed up house!

steppemum · 13/06/2023 15:35

and I am really laughing at the idea that my dog needs a cool mat.

Hmm no.
That's what the tiled kitchen floor is for!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 13/06/2023 15:38

Poor dog It's too warm for a proper walk now, let alone leaving
It I'm the garden It could die of heat exhaustion.
You were kind giving it water, you care more than its owners

Me too. Mine makes for DHs office floor but it has to be really hot for that. Instead he’s spend most of today pottering around the lawn, watching the bees and alternating between a swift nap in the sun or one in the shade. He could go in, all the doors are open but he’s happier outdoors.

I bought him a cool mat once. Not a hope was he using it.

Many European countries have terrible problems with stray cats and dogs, subsequent disease (including rabies) and lower animal cruelty prevention laws.

SmudgeButt · 13/06/2023 16:07

Be a nice neighbour. Tell them that there dog barks all day and is obviously very lonely all by itself. Tell them you're worried that other neighbours will complain about the noise or might report them for pet abuse. And then offer to walk their dog for them twice a day. For a price.

Pinkyandthebrain96 · 13/06/2023 16:12

Op ring environmental health it will be classed as a noise disturbance .We went on holiday about 6yrs ago and my father in law used to pop in feed and water our dogs and let them out to do their business .He didn't realise he had shut out our then elderly dog and he barked all night .Friend of mine texted me the next morning and I was mortified and apologised to the whole street.I had a letter I know it was not from my street cause everyone knew it was a genuine mistake but it had rightly upset someone else .When I rang environmental health the lady was lovely and closed the case immediately as she said it is the constant offenders who will have action taken against them .Poor dog though so cruel in this heat.

Cosyfire · 13/06/2023 16:22

I'm absolutely baffled by many of the posts on here. 'Ring the dog warden. Ring the council. Report her. Etc.'
When did people become so belligerent. She made a mistake in letting her dog outside, fair enough. She's a neighbour, so surely better not to fight with her. OP did the right thing I.e. no major drama. Put water out. Open the back door and let dog in. The neighbour might now be inclined to help OP out if she ever needs a favour....live and let live

suburbophobe · 13/06/2023 16:22

offer to walk their dog for them twice a day. For a price.

Why would OP take on that responsibility? Did you miss the part where she mentioned she has children?

You could offer to do it though. 😅

howdoesyourgardengrowinmay · 13/06/2023 17:09

record the dog yapping, then play it back to them on a loop through loud speakers at 6am on sunday morning.

PToosher · 13/06/2023 17:12

RSPCA have no powers of entry. Or any other special powers for that matter.

pictoosh · 13/06/2023 17:17

@BitOutOfPractice is right though. Neither the council or the RSPCA will do anything. I'm sorry, I know so many of you love to report people or love advising people to report other people.

FloofCloud · 13/06/2023 17:38

Bloody idiots! I hope you told them to sort their dog out so it's not a nuisance- our dog loves being outside but she has to come in if she woofs for more than a minute or so .. I HATE incessant woofing . And we have a Samoyed who are super woofy and we can stop her

standardduck · 13/06/2023 17:43

Poor dog and poor you, OP.

Your neighbors are irresponsible dog owners. Can't believe they didn't even leave a water bowl out.

I would report them if it keeps happening.

Thesharkradar · 13/06/2023 18:14

since dog wardens are useless can you shame her on social media?
