Nice to see that the shark that killed a swimmer in Egypt was caught and beaten to death on the beach.

<Slow handclap>

Isn't this a bit like saying anyone who chooses to own a dog as a pet knows there's the potential for it killing someone? So if it kills your child you should just carry on living with it?

troubg · 09/06/2023 18:52

There is predator and prey throughout the animal world. shark killed human, humans killed shark. It’s the circle of life.

Quite

ReleasetheCrackHen · 09/06/2023 18:06

It was aTiger shark and sadly once they start attacking AND eating humans, they keep coming back for more human.

It’s not much different from putting down a dangerous dog.

😵‍💫 how ridiculous.

ReleasetheCrackHen · 09/06/2023 18:13

It wasn’t humane, but necessary. That shark killed and then ate a person.

You've got to be joking right? How on earth was it necessary

Humans are not more important than sharks. We have no more right to exist than they do. In fact the world would be a better place if there were more sharks and fewer humans. We're a despicable species and the sooner we're extinct the better it'll be for the planet and all the other creatures.

Do you have dc?

No.

ClaraThePigeon · 09/06/2023 18:54

lol, I have a marine environmental degree, I understand overfishing & the impact of it. Doesn't mean I'm happy to get eaten by a shark!

Well neither am I so I don't go in the water and if I do I accept it's a risk I run. No different from rip currents, waves, hidden rocks etc.

But it sounds as though the sharks are being positively encouraged and that's insane. That definitely needs to be cracked down on ASAP.

troubg · 09/06/2023 18:54

@ClaraThePigeon your completely misunderstanding me. I'm passionate about sharks, it's not either or. For example I don't have to wash my clothes or myself in the Nile. If I did I wouldn't want to be taken by a croc despite me being in their territory.

troubg · 09/06/2023 18:55

We really need to get away from the idea that we are the only species who matters and the only species to whom the earth belongs.

What does this look like in practice then?

Pootle40 · 09/06/2023 18:55

dancinginthesky · 09/06/2023 18:28

I think more blame should lay with the resort than with the victims personally. People swim there because a resort encourages it

Yes and Egypt should spend some fucking money on shark nets. Then we swim safely and sharks aren't brutally killed for being in their own home.

troubg · 09/06/2023 18:56

@halfsiesonapotnoodle it's not how tiger sharks hunt & it's very unusual for a shark to bite & keep coming back. We are not tasty to them.

ClaraThePigeon · 09/06/2023 18:56

Er no. The shark is a wild animal in its natural habitat not a creation of man though the situation may have been sadly.

troubg · 09/06/2023 18:56

Maybe read up on sharks...

ClaraThePigeon · 09/06/2023 18:56

Shark nets kill sharks and many other species.

dancinginthesky · 09/06/2023 18:57

Not necessarily on here but on social media in general there's a really nasty attitude simply bc the lad was Russian and a desire to make the shark a hero of a story.

I don't think it's nice the shark was killed how it was but I don't think the shark needs to be hailed a hero either

If it wasn't even natural behaviour for that shark then it may have been sick and killing it stopped it spreading. Fuck knows and I doubt that was the intention but 2 not just 1 are dead

Pootle40 · 09/06/2023 18:57

For all the people saying 'this shark was not acting normally?' Ever thought that things us humans do in the area have caused that.

troubg · 09/06/2023 18:58

The arrogance of humans thinking we are not part of the food chain.

We are not part of a normal sharks food chain, why would you think that? Arrogance 🤣🤣 Use your noggin, if it was normal for sharks to eat humans there would be so many more attacks.

youhavenoshameonyourface · 09/06/2023 18:47

Steve Irwin disrespected, mishandled and overpowered animals. He got what he deserved. He was an idiot, and the people who killed rays 'for' him are idiots.

The way he used to creep up on animals and leap on them was appalling.

deepdeepblue · 09/06/2023 19:00

QuintanaRoo · 09/06/2023 18:51

This shark expert says human aren’t part of the shark food chain 🤷‍♀️

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1337034/Egypt-shark-attack-What-REALLY-happened-Sharm-El-Sheikh.html

Have you read the article you linked to? It actually says not ‘normally’ therefore suggesting sometimes they are. It also says human interference has altered their behaviour.

Therefore have we not positioned ourselves into their food chain?

ClaraThePigeon · 09/06/2023 19:00

What does this look like in practice then?

Well it's a bit fucking late but accepting that human interests and profits can not always come first would be a start. We have to acknowledge and respect that we are only one species on this earth
Not the only one that matters. Some basic common sense would be start. Go forward with those facts in mind but it's probably too late. The planet is totally fucked up because of humans.

BriarHare · 09/06/2023 19:01

I was horrified when I read what happened to the shark.

No, as pet dogs don't need to hunt to eat. We feed them dog food. Sharks aren't domesticated and DO need to hunt to eat.
Going out around dogs, there is a reasonable expectation to be safe and that their owners will keep them under control. If I am attacked, a crime has been committed.
The shark attacked in its territory, hunting to eat. No-one set it on the poor man, there are no laws it could adhere to or even understand, and no owner to ensure it would follow them.
What should have happened is an investigation into why it came so close to shore (human behaviour encouraging it most likely, as mentioned upthread), not a pointless killing.
Did Steve Irwin's family demand the stingray who killed him was killed in retaliation...?

coxesorangepippin · 09/06/2023 19:02

You take a risk when swimming in the sea

People don't realise this, or if they do, take heed

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 09/06/2023 19:02

Shark just doing what sharks do, surely?

Don't get me wrong if that was my loved ones that had been killed I'd be distraught but it's not like the shark was doing anything "wrong" per say

I suppose it's taught all the other sharks an example though Confused

Does anyone know how f there are Shark Feeding type excursions where it happened?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/06/2023 19:03

It has no idea humans are apparently on the "must not eat list"

It didn't need to; as so many have pointed out human flesh isn't part of their normal diet anyway, so this was just a hideous accident possibly involving a sick shark

I suppose at least this one isn't now around to attack anyone else, but most likely those who killed it were thinking less about the Russian bather and more about their tourist industry
