Nice to see that the shark that killed a swimmer in Egypt was caught and beaten to death on the beach.

I would also like to add if I saw a shark ripping my child to pieces, I would probably participate in hitting and kicking that shark. It would be barbaric, but it would be instinctual for me.

Agree

And I mean that to say, why is the death of this fish so upsetting compared to all the cod that go into our fish and chips?

The people who killed it were reacting to a horrific event they had just witnessed and used what they had at hand. Not sure I can judge them for that.

People in other countries, include where I'm from, eat dogs.

To them, it's just a dog, so they keep them by the side of the road to sell for slaughter stuffed in cages in the sweltering heat. Do you support the view that a dog is just a dog, then?

Like pp said, that doesn't excuse cruelty. Whether the shark supposedly had to be killed, or an animal is used for meat, there should never be cruelty.

Harringtonperle · 10/06/2023 18:35

I get that we don't need to be in shark-infested waters, but disagree we should stay out of the sea altogether. On the beaches I go to in summer, if we go swimming there are no fish or other animals that close to shore, so what harm is it doing?

Bananananananananana · 10/06/2023 18:35

CleverLilViper · 10/06/2023 17:31

We are the absolute worst species on this planet. We are the ones who invade the ocean which isn’t our natural habitat and then kill the animals whose natural habitat it is when they attack us for being there. Abysmal and to all defending it- fuck off.

There is no justifying this. None. We’re the ones destroying the ocean and then we have the nerve to act like we own the word and can just do what we want. Shark kills swimmer who ventured into the ocean. Sad for the victim and the family. But it’s a foreseeable risk and one many accept when they plod into the ocean mindlessly.

It’s not like the shark got out of the ocean, knocked on his door and went for a snack is it? If people stayed out of the ocean especially in areas they are known to swim and hunt this kind of thing wouldn’t happen.

It's true, but people simply refuse to understand this.

It was aTiger shark and sadly once they start attacking AND eating humans, they keep coming back for more human.

It’s not much different from putting down a dangerous dog.

I don't think that's correct? Where have got the research from?
Tigers are more opportunistic and aggressive hunters, and not that fussy, like the bull shark, they are fast and go shallow, but I've not heard once they get a taste for humans they will stay in those hunting grounds?
If that's the case then stop people going in the water in that area.
Your analogy to dangerous dogs really doesn't work or justify killing these incredible beasts which are essential for biodiversity.

stbrandonsboat · 10/06/2023 20:00

A shark doesn't have the cognitive abilities to decide that humans taste nice, so it'll go after humans from now on. That's just anthropomorphising.

Bankholnightmare · 10/06/2023 20:35

Clearly this is a tragic Incident. I don’t know the merits of the info shared here stating that if the shark tastes human it will want more and needs destroying. However I can see why in the heat of the moment they would of wanted to euthanise the shark. What they did was barbaric and not euthanising it was to cause destruction in a horrible way and a sad reflection on humans. The man spiked the sharks interest in its natural habitat and unfortunately that ended up in death by the sharks instinctive behaviour. Horrible for all those involved.

I cannot excuse a few things I think are facts. The resort dumping food in the sea, knowingly attracting sharks and increasing the risk, totally stupid and a contributing aspect to the death. The response to the attach, slow and poor. They really need a ‘shark’ watch and a robust response to deter and help any victim. Unsure if there are signs warning people of the risks, therefore whilst you may not comprehend the reality until these thing’s happen and not take it as seriously as you should at least there is an attempt of awareness.

Ultimately whilst it might not of been fully avoidable, I think more could of been done to respond and prevent. They seriously need to do something about it.

GucciBear · 11/06/2023 09:35

Milkbottle 2000 I was not suggesting that the UK is a heavenly place for animals! I fight animal cruelty here as much as I am able. However, many , many animals are ill treated and abused in the Middle East and there are not many charities around to help them. I refuse to accept animal cruelty anywhere.

Brooke do sterling work and I shall continue to give them my support.

crabbyoldappletree · 11/06/2023 11:49

You know the sad thing about this thread is so much ignorance and or fear of sharks. If we were to take out all the bull sharks, the white sharks and the tiger sharks (three species humans tend to come into contact with) we'd damage the ocean ecosystems beyond repair. We need healthy oceans for humans to survive.
jellyfish kill approximately 100 people a year compared to 10 fatalities by shark.
The difference is death by jellyfish doesn't have such a catchy headline compared to a shark attack. Jaws has a massive amount to answer for.

Except we are going literally into their home. We are simply guests in the ocean. So why do we kill creatures that behave in their natural, biological way in their OWN territory? Oh that's right, we are humans and better and more important than anything else.

It is different than putting down dogs.

Yep!

Sharks are utterly fascinating to me, I love watching them and learning about them. They’ve remained pretty much unaltered by evolution apart from having to get a bit smaller to match their natural prey size. Perfect machines.

This.

If only from a purely selfish point of view, we need to leave the oceans and their inhabitants - "nice" and "nasty" - as untouched as possible.

No animal is "evil" - only human beings have a sense of "right" and "wrong" - other creatures just "are". They act according to their instincts; thy kill to eat, or to hone their hunting skills which they need to eat; they don't kill for sport, pleasure or revenge in the same way as we do (even those animals, like cats, which "play" with their prey are just keeping their skills up scratch (pun intended 😁) - and they do not deliberately torture other creatures for fun.

Only man does that.

I never go in the sea, its their territory, not mine. A few years ago we were in Florida and saw a shark fishing boat coming in with dead sharks hanging from a rack.
I presume it was done to protect the people going out on jetskis, as it would ruin their rental business if the sharks caught them.

Florida is absolutely rife with bull sharks who are notoriously aggressive. I spent my childhood there and many of my adult years on holidays as I have family there and it's well known not to swim in the sea, or the in the inlets of water. My family have a house on an inlet from the sea with a boat and regularly see sharks and dolphins swimming around outside their back garden.

elm26 · 12/06/2023 03:01

@WetBandits totally agree. I've loved sharks since I could walk and talk. I have encyclopaedias on them, I love shark week and I'm morbidly obsessed with the huge scary ones like great whites. I'd love to do a cage dive but I don't like how they bait the water and find it pretty cruel. DH thinks I'm mad. DD is 3 weeks old and already has a shark cuddly toy for her cot (obviously I remove everything before putting her in) 😂

Let’s be friends 😁

I’ve become known as ‘crazy shark lady’ by my friends and family, everyone tags me in any shark related thing they see on social media, I get shark-themed stuff for birthdays and Christmas and at least three people have put a shark emoji by my name in their phone contacts 😂

I’ve been researching cage diving for years as it’s number one on my bucket list but have yet to find a company I’m happy with from an ethical perspective! At this point I’ll be going swimming off the coast of Australia and taking matters into my own hands with nothing but a wetsuit and a prayer (only kind of kidding) 🦈

elm26 · 14/06/2023 00:07

@WetBandits it's so funny because my family think it's hilarious. I'm a girlie girl through and through, love make up and puppies and pink and great white sharks? Make it make sense 😂 my stepsister adopted me one for Christmas this year (the ones where you can track them!) and it came with a shark keyring ha!

Oh I'm not brave enough to free dive with them but if you do and live to tell the story please update me! 😂 🦈

The poor creature was dragged out of the sea and literally punched/kicked to death. It will have died slowly, painfully and in utter terror. For engaging in its natural behaviour in its own habitat.

These creatures are endangered ffs. Not that it would be acceptable if they weren't! If you don't want to run the risk of being predated on by sea creatures, stay out of the fucking sea.

I’m sure the human it killed and ate didn’t have such a great experience either…

Would be very boring if we all liked the same things, wouldn’t it?

I also never said to stay out of the sea 🤷🏼‍♀️ I also understand and respect sharks and know that I could very easily be killed by one if I went willy-nilly into where they naturally live so if I did decide to dive ethically with them, I would most likely want to do that with the protection of a shark-proof cage. Risk assessment is key 😉

I. for one, am ready to welcome our cartilaginous overlords, and will offer them gifts of fealty.

Emotionalsupportviper · 14/06/2023 08:52

Somehow lost a line. I had pointed out that the way global warming is gong they'll be cruising gracefully and predatorily around our living rooms soon.

Soz about that.

dawngreen · 14/06/2023 12:10

So a shark acting as a shark protecting its area waiting to give birth to its young gets beaten to death. People are not happy to see a shark family just dead. They want to put it on display too. No hope for my species.

Emotionalsupportviper · 15/06/2023 08:38

She was pregnant@dawngreen ?

I hadn't realised that - poor thing!

If someone decided to walk out into a motorway and got run over, people would accept that they'd been stupid. They'd feel sorry for them, and for their family but think "Well, what do you expect?"

Someone swims in a shark-infested area where the water is regularly chummed to attract sharks, and where it is known that there are sharks, and get attacked, and everybody goes crackers and it's "KILL THE SHARK!!!".

Very possibly this wasn't even the shark responsible. I am even more angry at this ridiculous, needlessly cruel, pointless response now.
