Shark Attack

Nice to see that the shark that killed a swimmer in Egypt was caught and beaten to death on the beach.

<Slow handclap>

I think more blame should lay with the resort than with the victims personally. People swim there because a resort encourages it

pickledandpuzzled · 09/06/2023 18:30

Perhaps they wanted to grab the correct shark while they could see it.

I mean, awful, but understandable.

Shocker as shark engages in natural shark behaviour in known shark territory.

No. Tiger sharks don’t normally attack, kill and eat humans. They are known to bite, but that is rare almost always non-fatal.

QuintanaRoo · 09/06/2023 18:32

Egypt has an ongoing issue with occasional shark attacks. I was in Sharm over a decade ago when someone had an arm ripped off infront of me by a shark and then someone a few days later was killed.

At the time there was a lot of chatter about boat trips where the operators throw bloody scraps into the water to attract the sharks so the tourists can watch them. They were meant to be cracking down on this as it was felt it was contributing to sharks coming closer to the coast when normally they stay out in deeper water.

but yes, once a particular shark has found an easy source of food it will keep returning. So while I don’t agree with them clubbing it to death I can see why it might be felt that killing it is the best option for the locals and tourist trade.

There was also an issue with cargo ships from Australia throwing dead sheep overboard as they passed close to Sharm which was thought to also maybe be attracting sharks. Not sure if that’s still a problem.

horrible way to die.

I wouldn't have clicked on this thread if I had known it was about animal abuse.

Title needs an edit. 🙁

troubg · 09/06/2023 18:33

Isn't it quite normal to kill sharks or lions etc that attack humans?

troubg · 09/06/2023 18:33

Are you going to swim up to a shark with a syringe?

lol

The poor creature was dragged out of the sea and literally punched/kicked to death. It will have died slowly, painfully and in utter terror. For engaging in its natural behaviour in its own habitat.

These creatures are endangered ffs. Not that it would be acceptable if they weren't! If you don't want to run the risk of being predated on by sea creatures, stay out of the fucking sea.

I think just being out of water would have rendered it unconscious rather quickly so unable to feel anything.

Tiger sharks are not an endangered species.
It wasn’t its natural behaviour, tiger sharks rarely bite and when they do it is almost always non fatal and they certainly do not eat humans.

This one wasn’t acting normal.

It was aTiger shark and sadly once they start attacking AND eating humans, they keep coming back for more human.

It’s not much different from putting down a dangerous dog.

Except we humans are entering their atmosphere. Humans know what is in the water. Whilst it is a horrible thing to happen and I feel much sympathy for this poor man and his family, killing that shark won't bring him back. And he entered water knowing things could be in there. Of course I'm not implying it's his fault, but it's a risk people take when they enter the water.

troubg · 09/06/2023 18:35

Bit victim blamly! Do you have the same attitude when people drown or ships sink?

ClaraThePigeon · 09/06/2023 18:35

It is but it shouldn't be. In the grand scheme of things we're no more important than any other species yet we're utterly convinced that we are, hence why the planet is fucked.

That’s what I think too as Tiger sharks are normally not aggressive like this. You wouldn’t want to kill innocent sharks.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 09/06/2023 18:35

Did anyone tell the Egyptian sharks that the creatures swimming where their prey does, but wearing skimpy clothes, are strictly off-limits for food?

How abhorrent to kill a shark for doing shark things in a shark environment.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 09/06/2023 18:36

Utter savages.

Killing the shark prevents it from killing more humans. This shark was not acting normal for a Tiger shark at all by killing and eating a human.

troubg · 09/06/2023 18:37
    • If You go into their territory, and it is their territory. it's a risk you run. We don't go hacking hills, trees and mountains to bits when people fall off them. Sharks are just another part of nature.

But other animals are killed when they attach eg bears, lions, crocodiles, snakes.

Tiger sharks are usually off the coast in deep water in the day. They come in to feed at night. This shark did not do that, again, this Tiger shark was not acting normally.

It's not natural behaviour though...

ClaraThePigeon · 09/06/2023 18:39

I remain unconvinced that a shark is doing anything more wrong by eating a human than it is by consuming a dolphin or other creature just because we're so staggeringly arrogant that we think we ought to be off menu and other species ought to know this.

Only if an innocent person/creature is dragged out and brutally killed in revenge.

Did you really think this analogy through?

deepdeepblue · 09/06/2023 18:39

I am ashamed to be part of the human race when I see things like this. That poor creature, humans are so unnecessarily barbaric, cruel and destructive. Any person who enters the sea where there have been previous shark attacks is aware there is a risk (however small) that it may happen again, possibly to them.

I am heartbroken after seeing this today and have made two decisions…one to find a way to make a meaningful contribution to a shark charity (if anyone knows of a good one please link) and to never ever visit Egypt.

troubg · 09/06/2023 18:40

Except we humans are entering their atmosphere. Humans know what is in the water.

I think the point is they don't as they didn't want to discourage tourism.

User0311 · 09/06/2023 18:40

Terrible that the shark got killed. Especially in such a horrific way

troubg · 09/06/2023 18:40

killing that shark won't bring him back.

I don't think anyone thinks that, it's to stop another attack.

We generally don’t beat our dogs to death. Well some people do.

Bastard humans.
