Apparently the title of the Paul Simon song, Mother and Child Reunion, was inspired by him seeing a chicken omelette called this in a Chinese restaurant.

😂😂😂

WiddlinDiddlin · 02/06/2023 15:14

That looks fabulous but you'd have to take out the chicken, eggs, potatoes, hummus and mushrooms, and replace it all with more lettuce - theres far too much nice, fun, tasty bits in there for it to count!

Senzi · 02/06/2023 15:15

Looks like a lovely salad to me

RedRobyn2021 · 02/06/2023 15:16

That looks delicious 😋

I saw a "potato salad" recipe recently that was actually chickpeas in something that looked like mayo but probably wasn't. No potatoes at all!
What's that about?

I do a tuna mayo sandwich which is chickpeas and no tuna!

PollyThePixie · 02/06/2023 14:47

I agree.

I would say I’d had a big salad and something with it to fill me up. Protein probably. Two different kinds perhaps.

Agreed. I was making massive salads long before Mumsnet was a twinkle in someone's eye - I was working crazy hours and a big salad made on Monday with some protein added each day would last me a week of lunches and maybe evening meals too.

SuffolkUnicorn · 02/06/2023 15:19

Yes it is I love salads

Have you considered calling it a chickpea mayo sandwich?

SuffolkUnicorn · 02/06/2023 15:20

What is in it? Mushrooms and chicken?

BarbaraofSeville · 02/06/2023 15:21

There's recipes for vegan 'tuna' on the internet, which is chickpeas and other stuff.

Eg https://lovingitvegan.com/vegan-tuna/

No, I don't know why they don't call it 'chickpea salad' or similar either. What, with veganism being about not eating meat or fish and all that.

Vegan Tuna

This vegan tuna is so easy to make and tastes remarkably close to real tuna. No really, it does. Wonderful for a vegan tuna salad sandwich.

BarbaraofSeville · 02/06/2023 15:22

I've made it and it's quite nice (because I like chick peas, capers, nori etc). No, it does not taste anything like real tuna.

IntoDeepBlueSea · 02/06/2023 15:30

Well I showed this to DHubby, and he said it looked way too much for a lady, but he'd eat it with our 2 x Dboys who are both 6ft 4.

HTH.

@BarbaraofSeville Oh, that looks really good. Will definitely try it. I just think I'd be slightly annoyed if I ordered tuna and got that.

Absolutely Yummy looking!

Looks like a standard salad dinner for me although I always add hot stuff like mushroom or asparagus microwaved in a bit of butter and some freshly made hot potato salad to it as well. Sometimes the chicken pieces or fish fingers are hot too.

I like the mix of hot and cold food on a plate.

100% me too!! Can’t bear chicken and egg together!

Because they're from the same animal?

Lots of people eat beefburgers and drink a milkshake, which isn't really different.

Has no-one heard of chicken fried rice?

Although of course, now someone will say that fried rice is an abomination that is only sold in Chinese takeaways in the UK and none existent in China.

Not that anyone on MN would ever eat fried rice, what with it being full of white carbs and twice cooked rice being guaranteed to cause food poisoning.

TooJoy · 02/06/2023 15:50

Wow that’s a salad I could eat every day!

I’m trying to lose weight so although I have a massive salad, it is actually salad. Whereas I would say that is more like a meal with a side salad.

But so what.
If you’re a healthy weight then there’s no reason not to indulge and enjoy your food.

I think we need a diagram.

And we need to know if you’re on a 6-figure salary with a 6ft 4 DH, if you have strapping twin teenaged DSs who play rugby 8 days a week, and a rescue DDog. Where do you buy your DClothes? If it’s Toast, Seasalt, Joules or Boden, congratulations, it’s a MN DSalad. If it’s Primark then you are responsible for the obesity crisis in the DNHS.

DClothes... 😂

I could also do with reading this. I thought a Massive Salad was a substantial 'meal salad' so as well a normal amount of 'salad' and maybe roast sweet potato, it had something like a chicken breast or other protein, plus dip and dressing.

But it seems that it has to have large quantities of every different type of vegetable imaginable plus something like a slither of chicken.

What are all your fridges like? I eat nowhere near the MN recommended amount of fruit and veg and really struggle to get the modest amount I buy into the fridge and there's only two of us.

I can't imagine how big your fridge needs to be to accommodate a week's worth of MN approved quantities for a family.

Not cold mushrooms. Fresh, hot garlic mushrooms!

So the hot food is touching cold food?

Oyakodon is a Japanese donburi rice bowl with both chicken and egg in it - it means parent and child rice bowl.

I'm baffled by all these people who think a salad has to be just raw vegetables.

I've always thought the MN salad was a big bowl of vegetables. It never occurred to me it would have protein or carbs included as part of the salad. That’s something else. We go through a lot of salad everyday. It’s either on the table to eat as a side to the main meal, or people have a bowl just because, or it’s part of a meal with protein to fill me up. The salad is always the most food on the plate if the salad is the main meal (for me) but I’ve never had a sliver of chicken with it. It would be grilled chicken breast, a salmon fillet, chick peas, halloumi, eggs, hummus and I’d say I had a big salad with something on the side to fill me up. I love salad. I have it for my lunch everyday and it usually comes in at 450 calories including a dressing of olive oil and lemon juice.
