Rainbows everywhere 🌈

FlipFlopsInMyCar · 01/06/2023 15:30

Maybe I am being unreasonable. Not sure.

But I clicked on my linkedIn profile today and two massive rainbows stuck out at me! Looks like two of my previous workplaces have changed their logos to the rainbow flag.

Now, I'm in support of individuals wearing rainbow badges if they want to publically show they are allies of LGBTQ+ Even a few colleagues have put the rainbow on their email signature. That's cool with me.

But I don't know how I feel about whole workplaces replacing their company logo with a rainbow? Seems like rainbows are taking over the world.

I guess maybe it doesn't matter but I can't help but think it's a bit weird that whole institutions are now becoming activists and replacing their identity with rainbows which to me, makes a statement?

Not sure whether and what I'm being unreasonable about, but just wondered other people's thoughts really?

I always check to see if the companies also change the logo of their Middle Eastern branch to the Pride logo. If they don't (which is always the case), I know that it's just performative allyship.

Do you also check their African and Asian branches?

Thesunnymood · 02/06/2023 13:21

But yes, it's performative bollocks. Totally agree there

lailamaria · 02/06/2023 15:24

yes there is other acceptance months to do with disabilities, lgbtq+ people deserve to be shown acceptance and yes maybe it is commercialised but the movement as a whole is important and yes its a protected characteristic by law so showing some acceptance by the companies is only going to help them

lailamaria · 02/06/2023 15:28

also the rainbow has been the flag for lgbtq+ people for literally about 100 years now it's not this huge 'woke thing' anyone ever heard of being a friend of dorothy because of the rainbow, honestly you do all sound genuinely homophobic, and trans people paved the way for lgbtq rights so all the transphobic lesbians need to be quiet aswell, trans people exist, you'll never wipe them out sucks to be you i guess

What is a protected characteristic?

lailamaria · 02/06/2023 15:51

@TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening a protected characteristic is something that is if a person has that characteristic then they aren't allowed to be discriminated against, some include, race, sexuality, marriage and yes gender identity, meaning that they have a right to protection and cannot be removed from a workplace or an institution based on that characteristic, ie when so many people last year were annoyed that that trans student gave a speech at that university and said that they shouldn't have been allowed, well legally they couldn't stop them

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 02/06/2023 15:55

Sorry, I wasn't clear, I meant what on the list of LGBTQ+++++ is a protected characteristic?
Is two spirit?

Thesunnymood · 02/06/2023 15:56

It's actually gender re-assignment, not identity

lailamaria · 02/06/2023 16:01

@Thesunnymood you're right, sex, sexuality and gender reassignment i feel falls under the same umbrella though but yeah my bad

@TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening well sexuality is lgtbq and that's on the list so i don't understand what you mean

It’s the cheating in Women’s sports and harassing of lesbians by male bodied persons that is so offensive to many women.

A barrel scraping male hopeless at sport can self ID as a woman and get top place.

No wonder there are heated feelings.

Blaire White seems eminently sensible however.

lailamaria · 02/06/2023 16:13

@oakleaffy trans people have a right to exist idk why you think that they don't, they've existed for thousands of years, been respected for just as long, it's only in this past century that their existence has been deemed controversial, also that comment about women's sport just sounds misogynistic, also i can't thing of a single trans woman who wants to 'harass lesbians' most trans people date trans people, honestly you just sound like you want to hate them and no matter what they do you will hate them

Thesunnymood · 02/06/2023 16:15

They are different things though. And it would really help the dialogues if people stopped claiming otherwise.

The flag was created in 1978 by a gay man, and made its first appearance at the Gay Freedom Day Parade.
Craig Rodman, Fred Sergeant, Linda Rhodes and Ellen Broidy, Homosexuals, started Pride.
Go find images from the early events and see who wasn't there. The "TQ" are radically absent from photographs.

And, no thank you. No transwashing of gay history today, thanks.
Storme, a lesbian, threw the first brick at the Stonewall riots.
Martha was not there at the time that the riots started, and more importantly he identified as a gay man and laughed at and about people who thought he was a woman.
In HIS own words - https://www.youtube.com/shorts/sYW0Mg1i_wk
Yes, there was a mix of gays, lesbians, and drag queens. But those queens had no desire to occupy womanhood or pretend that their attire made them female.

In the UK Pride started with the Gay Liberation Front, Bev Jackson, a lesbian, was one of the founders and is still active as a founder of the LGB Alliance.. Once again, something's missing from the GLF, isnt it? Ah yes, the TQ, because they weren't introduced to the LGB until the 2010s when Stonewall, needed to find a new income stream once gay people had achieved equality.

And while we're at it, the hyperbole and silly bleats about "wiping us out" and "we exist" has got well past its sell by date.
Nobody is afraid of the tantrums anymore.

1978 was not literally (or figuratively) 100 years ago. If it was I'd like my pension as I'm now apparently 94 years old. No wonder I'm tired!

Why do male bodied persons “Identify as Lesbians “ and seek to get podium in Women’s sports?
If they kept to their own categories, no problem.
Women feel discomfited at a male bodied person in a women’s group saying “ They have periods”

A heavy silence falls and the male bodied get a kick out of it, I’m sure, bullying women as men have always done.

Exactly. If 1978 was a century ago, I’d like my pension too, please!
Someone’s maths is way out!

JulieHoney · 02/06/2023 17:05

Cynical corporate rainbow-washing. Capitalism taking over what was once protest.

Clarabe1 · 02/06/2023 17:18

The company I work for has gone pride mad. Rainbows are literally everywhere. I have no issue with this except for the blatant hypocrisy of it all when they actively seek business in Qatar! It’s just virtue signaling. I suspect most companies are the same and use Pride as a PR opportunity.

FlipFlopsInMyCar · 01/06/2023 15:36

It does actually!!! I thought I might be being unreasonable, just something didn't sit right! Like the companies had lost their identity which was being replaced by a rainbow and all that is saying (which is good stuff, it's just it's only one issue so not sure why it's taking presidence (over say, BLM or woman's rights or North Korea or cost of living crisis or the Russia war or etc...)

Pretty sure BLM went bankrupt

Highandlows · 02/06/2023 17:31

This is to make sure they are getting LGTB and GenZ and millennials to buy their products and to make sure they will not boycott otherwise. Nothing more.
