Rainbows everywhere 🌈

FlipFlopsInMyCar · 01/06/2023 15:30

Maybe I am being unreasonable. Not sure.

But I clicked on my linkedIn profile today and two massive rainbows stuck out at me! Looks like two of my previous workplaces have changed their logos to the rainbow flag.

Now, I'm in support of individuals wearing rainbow badges if they want to publically show they are allies of LGBTQ+ Even a few colleagues have put the rainbow on their email signature. That's cool with me.

But I don't know how I feel about whole workplaces replacing their company logo with a rainbow? Seems like rainbows are taking over the world.

I guess maybe it doesn't matter but I can't help but think it's a bit weird that whole institutions are now becoming activists and replacing their identity with rainbows which to me, makes a statement?

Not sure whether and what I'm being unreasonable about, but just wondered other people's thoughts really?

In parts of the USA, Pride events have been cancelled due to the increased risk towards the LGBT community. Ron De Santis has increased hate towards the LGBT community and people are fleeing Florida for safe states.

Companies are being targeted such as Target and Kohls because they support Pride. They are being boycotted.

In Uganda. gay people can be executed. In many countries, being LGBT can end up with a lengthy jail sentence.

This is why Pride exists. To show people that LGBT people won't be cowed.

Have you read up or watched the videos as to why Target is being targeted?

I'm fucking sick of the rainbow mafia

I resent it being appropriated.

Agreed.

Merangutan · 01/06/2023 20:18

It’s become corporate virtue signalling.

Rapunzzel · 01/06/2023 20:21

Ive seem a lot of talk about the LGB community rejecting the new flag

Yes, I've heard that too.

Dashel · 01/06/2023 20:23

If the company has good ethics and it’s relevant then it’s fine if it’s just to increase sales then it just annoys me.

We bought a packet of dreamies for our cat that had a rainbow on it and I just don’t get it. I think a lot of people are quite cynical about rainbows on everything.

Tillyteacup · 01/06/2023 20:25

I couldn’t care less about someone’s sexuality, I just don’t. I’m straight and I’m not proud or otherwise it’s just how I was born … I’m sure I would feel the same way if I was gay. Why the need to be shouting about who you sleep with , it’s bizarre.

Rapunzzel · 01/06/2023 20:26

It’s sad that in 2023, we still need to make it aware we accept a person for being gay

It's gone way beyond that. Even gay people don't want to be associated with the rainbow any more.

Rapunzzel · 01/06/2023 20:29

Pride and the rainbow symbolises homophobia now

I totally understand that.

I agree.

I liked it when businesses just sold the stuff they sell and didn't feel the need to plant flags in various political (or whatever) things.

FlipFlopsInMyCar · 01/06/2023 15:33

One of the institutions that now has a rainbow logo is a university, and I wondered if it's a response from them, to the trans issues of late, and what happened in Oxford(?) Hence my wondering that it is making a political statement.

They aren't permanent logo changes... It's just a faux sign of allegiance for the month of June for 'pride month'.

It's easier to make a rainbow logo for a month than make positive changes in your company / the world to support LGBTQ+ people.

Mischance · 01/06/2023 20:34

It will be splendid when people's sexuality or gender choices do not need to be announced or defended in any way nor have a flag, but just become part of the norm that is accepted by all.

It is a pendulum - when minorities are seeking acceptance they fly off to one end of the arc; then the naysayers react and are at the other end of the arc; then it all gradually settles in the middle, where minorities do not have to fight for their rights and those who are frightened by it all do not have to be so strident.

And then companies will not cynically exploit people to gain profit.

Roll on the day I say.

Divorcedalongtime · 01/06/2023 20:34

People are still being killed for being gay around the world, h til that ends it’s important t that everyone supports pride

Mrscarlossainz · 01/06/2023 20:38

I agree. Fed up of seeing the rainbow flags everywhere. It's just over the top now. Especially when companies change their logo to a rainbow for a few days - why?! There are far more important issues in the world to raise awareness of or support so I don't understand why everyone does it for pride.

outofthebleu · 01/06/2023 20:41

YANBU OP

Companies should stay away from politics.

I actively try not to give my custom to those who profess ideology I do not agree with, as, ultimately, my money goes into their bottom line and is helping to subsidise the propaganda

What's going on with businesses today that they seem to have all turned into indoctrination machines?

Look what happened to Bud Light in the US. They lost billions

Look what's happening with John Lewis, alienating their main customer base and inexplicably nobody seems to be able to stop it in spite of being a 'partnership'. Don't the staff realise that they are at risk of losing their livelihoods?

Look what's happened to Tesco's boss, John Allan, forced to resign because of anonymous 'allegations' that nobody has been able to prove. The CBI is said to be under attack too.

Some say that large corporations appear to be poisoned from within in an attempt to destroy British and Western industries and buy them on the cheap or replace with competition. It would be quite hard to believe this is not the case, as it's one example after another.

Namechangeed · 01/06/2023 20:41

It's approaching gay pride month. Most likely to get people talking about it prior to the events.

Rapunzzel · 01/06/2023 20:42

Not trendy enough though , is it

My daughter has a chromosomal deficiency that renders her with severe learning disabilities and needing 24/7 care for life. The chance of having this deficiency is 1/20.000. Nobody I speak to has even heard of it.

Thepeopleversuswork · 01/06/2023 20:43

I'm fine with anything that makes people feel that they are accepted in the workplace and gay people have fought very long and hard to gain this acceptance, so the fact that it's possible is to be celebrated.

But it is also totally kneejerk and default nowadays and mainly about PR, so I can't say that it signals much to me about an individual or a company other than the fact that they feel they ought to be seen doing it. I certainly don't feel a company which displays a rainbow on its LinkedIn for a month is groundbreaking or progressive.

On the other hand, if a statement that you accept gay people has become so bland that it attracts suspicion of rainbow-washing then it's a sign of how much progress has been made.

I'm leaving the T in LGBT to one side here because my feelings about this are much more ambivalent. But Pride is first and foremost about tolerance and acceptance of gay people and we should celebrate the mainstreaming of this.

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/06/2023 20:11

Have you read up or watched the videos as to why Target is being targeted?

They are going into Target shops, intimidating staff, tearing down displays.

Kohls is being targeted because it has Pride themed clothes.

Don't say Gay in Florida. Because your child might turn gay and God forbid that should happen

If you try and support your trans child, then that can lead to legal issues

No, Florida can’t ‘kidnap’ trans kids, but new law may affect custody disputes (tampabay.com)

Florida is the canary in the coalmine for the USA for LGBT rights.

CountZacular · 01/06/2023 15:39

I would be a more willing to accept companies shoving rainbows on their logos and doors when they show the same level of virtual signalling support to disabilities.

Absolutely this

When is dementia month I wonder?

Or stroke survivor month?

Or cerebral palsy month?

Nothingisblackandwhite · 01/06/2023 21:05

Mkgmum · 01/06/2023 17:37

I hearted something on vinted and instead of going red it was a rainbow 🙄 what does that really achieve for anyone. I don't understand why we have a full month dedicated to sexual preferences- but generally it didn't used to bother me. I don't like it when companies get involved in virtue signalling as others have said

The fact you say sexual preferences really tells anyone anything needed to know about you bigotry

NotMyMill · 01/06/2023 21:08

FlipFlopsInMyCar · 01/06/2023 15:36

It does actually!!! I thought I might be being unreasonable, just something didn't sit right! Like the companies had lost their identity which was being replaced by a rainbow and all that is saying (which is good stuff, it's just it's only one issue so not sure why it's taking presidence (over say, BLM or woman's rights or North Korea or cost of living crisis or the Russia war or etc...)

You’re right. Most of these organisations will say not a word for IWD and even less for black history month

Mkgmum · 01/06/2023 21:27

So because you don't agree I'm a bigot? I don't see any hatred in my comment. I have gay friends and relatives some of who share my views on pride. It doesn't need to be a full month shoved in everyone's faces

OhYeahDefinitely · 01/06/2023 21:34

I’m extremely cynical about it.

Last year Primark had a massive window display of rainbow tat they were hawking for Pride and that just summed it up for me. Virtue signalling doesn’t even cover it. It’s jumping on issues to make money without any real thought about what it means other than ‘let’s make ourselves look like inclusive good guys and people will buy more shite from us’.

My workplace has put a massive Trans Heroes display up for Pride for the third year running. I feel sorry for the LGB folk to be honest!

Rapunzzel · 01/06/2023 21:36

I hate that a picture of rainbow by a child or whatever has become a socially loaded image. Why couldn't they just make up a logo?

That's my grouse. They took a lovely childhood and happiness symbol and made it political (or trans, or whatever) I feel robbed.
