Rainbows everywhere 🌈

Maybe I am being unreasonable. Not sure.

But I clicked on my linkedIn profile today and two massive rainbows stuck out at me! Looks like two of my previous workplaces have changed their logos to the rainbow flag.

Now, I'm in support of individuals wearing rainbow badges if they want to publically show they are allies of LGBTQ+ Even a few colleagues have put the rainbow on their email signature. That's cool with me.

But I don't know how I feel about whole workplaces replacing their company logo with a rainbow? Seems like rainbows are taking over the world.

I guess maybe it doesn't matter but I can't help but think it's a bit weird that whole institutions are now becoming activists and replacing their identity with rainbows which to me, makes a statement?

Not sure whether and what I'm being unreasonable about, but just wondered other people's thoughts really?

I don’t really understand why people want to broadcast their sexuality when I think about it, but it doesn’t annoy me day to day.

It's called rainbow washing and is just companies jumping on a bandwagon. They aren't doing anything other changing a logo, requires absolutely no effort and costs them nothing.

It makes me think less of a company and that they must have poor marketing people working for them

I agree with this, but I don't think this was the OP's angle.

It annoys me because they do it for this cause but not for anything else.

Once they start doing it for people with disabilities etc I’ll be happy. Otherwise it just shows the pervasive commercialism of Pride/Stonewall etc.

senua · 01/06/2023 15:43

Listen to yourself! Why on earth has a company lost their identity because they want to show support for the LGBT community?
Unless their identity was previously raging discrimination.
Well, what about Universities, whose identity and purpose is all about encouraging thought and discussion. Except that they get rid of GC staff (e.g. Kathleen Stock) who dare to think and discuss. Where was the support for her when she suffered "raging discrimination" from the trans community?

Until less than 10 years ago even something like wearing a wedding ring was broadcasting your sexuality by default.

Denise82 · 01/06/2023 15:44

It's pride month 🏳️‍🌈

Grumpigal · 01/06/2023 15:45

I noticed the same on Linked in today too OP.

what a load of old shit.

Ive seem a lot of talk about the LGB community rejecting the new flag.

Interesting isn’t it, the people that pride is meant to represent aren’t actually the focal point anymore.

And YY to the pp who said they’d like to see the same commitment to disability awareness. Absolutely!

Soubriquet · 01/06/2023 15:46

It’s perfectly normal in June for the flag to appear everywhere. Even in businesses.

It’s sad that in 2023, we still need to make it aware we accept a person for being gay.

There was quite a lot of discussion around it, so it hardly got swept under the rug.

Personally I think that's total whataboutery and not relevant to this thread.
At the end of the day universities will ultimately reflect their students and research. Just because it is a university doesn't mean it is automatically a free for all for any speaker.

CoreyTaylorsSoggyTshirt · 01/06/2023 15:48

It would be better if all the companies who make their money from changing their logo/product during pride month would donate some of their profits. That would make a real impact.

Other than that I think it's great for all the people who have been unsure if they will be accepted or not to see rainbows everywhere letting them know they are loved and accepted.

It's not about broadcasting anything, for most, it's about not being forced to hide who you are. Many of us still have to consciously decide whether it's ok to be open. I even still hear the phrase "openly gay ", which says a lot about opinions.

spirit20 · 01/06/2023 15:49

If social issues taking over social media bothers you, I presume you're equally bothered on March 8th, International Women's Day, when companies post about how important female equality is?

Or do you just get bothered when you see people supporting LGBT rights.

LGB was what the flag was once about.

LGBT acceptance is taking over the world?

Can't say that upsets me in the slightest.

I can't help but think it's a bit weird that whole institutions are now becoming activists and replacing their identity with rainbows which to me, makes a statement?

Was it better when whole institutions were discriminatory based on things like sexual orientation?

Oh please, sticking a rainbow in their profile whilst they still have branches in the Middle East etc, is the very definition of virtue signalling. I’m bi and I’m fucking sick to dead of it, plus it’s all about the TQ now, which erases the LGB, so to me Pride and the rainbow symbolises homophobia now.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/06/2023 15:50

Is it because it's Pride month?
I'm on leave at the moment, I'm fully expecting the rainbow flag to be up when I am back next week.

Halftermdaysathome · 01/06/2023 15:52

Well I'm not sure what I prefer to see on LinkedIn - golf selfies, #bossbabe or these flags pretending that companies care about people.

No wonder I've noticed people deleting their LinkedIn accounts! It's all a toxic mess

TeaYarn · 01/06/2023 15:53

Why don’t you want organisations to show the same support as the people who work for the company?

Do you think organisations should discourage lesbians being customers?

SchoolShenanigans · 01/06/2023 15:55

I agree.

Hoppinggreen · 01/06/2023 15:56

I will not give my money to any organisation that appropriates the struggle of LGBT whatever else people for Commercial gain.
So while I do support the right of everyone to love who they want (as long as they are consenting and competent) I don’t support Pride

DeathBecomesHer · 01/06/2023 15:57

I just do not buy from companies that do this, its ridiculous

stayflufft · 01/06/2023 15:58

It’s a bit like that weird fashion moment in the mid 00s when there were moustaches everywhere. It’ll pass. It’s big companies paying lip service and nothing more.

Beowulfa · 01/06/2023 15:59

It's much easier and cheaper for a company to put a pretty flag on their website than it is to actually do anything about bullying and workplace discrimination. Or to do anything that would significantly improve the lives of staff, like a free on-site creche.

Beezknees · 01/06/2023 16:01

It's because it's Pride month.

Can't say a couple of rainbows bothers me in the slightest.

DontTouchMyMug · 01/06/2023 16:02

I roll my eyes and don't engage with it. Cynical virtue signalling. I'm not a fan of rainbow lanyards and the like either to be honest. I don't need a rainbow to prove that I don't hate gay people. I just.... don't.
