ParkRun and Transgender record breaker

PennysLane · 23/05/2023 23:09

Trans runner (M to F) has smashed a woman’s record. Turns out he’s an attempted murderer too.

He attempted to murder the HR Manager of U.K. Athletics after he investigated his eligibility to compete as a woman. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauren_Jeska )

I have enjoyed Parkrun on several occasions with my children, I’ll not be doing it again until they get this sorted. If at all.

Parkrun women's record held by transgender attempted murderer

Feminist activists outraged as it is revealed the fun run record is held by Lauren Jeska, who was given an 18-year sentence in 2017

i don’t think they’re taken especially seriously, and it seems it’s held by a woman

This is so sneery. I know lots of amateur runners who take them seriously. Just because it doesn't matter to you, doesn't mean it doesn't matter to other people.

Incapable of giving an opinion or discussing without flinging insults, are we, hotcuppatea?!

Get a grip.

MirandaWest · 24/05/2023 05:55

I had seen about this but hadn’t realised that the run in question happened in 2012, nor that the person involved is now in prison. I am wondering why it’s a news item now given that the conviction happened many years ago.

It also isn’t the overall female record for parkrun which is over 2 minutes quicker. This is the course record for one parkrun.

Parkrun could remove their results but I feel it is unlikely they would do so.

I don’t think it’s sneery, and I’ve been a park runner. In my experience, PBs are more important

You haven't proposed a sensible solution.

parkrun is a charity that aims to widen access to improving physical and mental health, so please suggest something that is sensible and affordable. Unless your goal is for all parkruns to be shut down and for people to have fewer opportunities to exercise.

There are millions of parkrunners already registered, and millions more that parkrun would like to register. How do you keep participation free of barriers and also restrict it in the way you propose? Go on. What's your hassle-free solution?

I believe strongly in female rights, but that doesn't mean I have to hate trans people. Believing in female rights and trans rights are not mutually exclusive things, you know...

Well that's the rub isn't it.

There are some areas where the rights between these two groups ARE mutually exclusive.

You can't let all transwomen have the right to enter female safe spaces AND safeguard women and girls simultaneously from the small minority of born males who will exploit this loophole to perv.

You can't let TW compete in female sport categories without disadvantages born females.

So why are you prioritising trans rights over women's rights?

So no one should care, because you don't care. Right.

Did I say that?

Hotcuppatea · 24/05/2023 06:08

Yes.

kettlebellchips · 24/05/2023 06:12

To me, this is where MN veers into culture war territory. There are very genuine concerns about the theat to women’s right and the well-being particularly of teenagers due to this issue of gender. But to suggest that Parkrun that be boycotted (as someone did suggest) because one transperson holds one track record somewhere doesn’t seem to me to be very productive

No, I didn’t.

This is getting like a pantomime

Gtsr443 · 24/05/2023 06:23

The attempted murder is truly horrific. Stabbed repeatedly in face and neck, suffered stroke, left disabled.
This violent, dangerous man shouldn't be permitted to participate in anything.

jeaux90 · 24/05/2023 06:27

Males don't belong in women's spaces, services and sports. This isn't hard FFS.

Hearti · 24/05/2023 06:35

If it’s just a run in the park then don’t bother publishing times!!

the reality is that lots of people use parkruns published timings to motivate their running speed, wether they be newbies starting out or club sprinters. Those age and sex ranks are religiously referenced with keen eyes every Saturday afternoon, often on the back of weeks, years or months of invested training. Park run results matter to the average jo bloggs competing in the race. The results are not diminished just because jo Bloggs isn’t a professional runner.

i suspect male heavy parkrun management, dismissing the fairest option of a third trans category. Sadly inclusion for people with penis means exclusion for women.

Quinoawoman · 24/05/2023 06:36

So someone has gone for a run in a particular place and done well at it, but because you disagree with their lifestyle choices you now won't go for a run in a different particular place? Bizarre.

I wonder how many other criminals go for runs regularly but you don't know or care because they're not trans?

an attempted murder in response to investigating fairness is utterly shocking,

Well she isn't, because she's in prison... 🙄

Quinoawoman · 24/05/2023 06:42

@PennysLane , it is not important news because she is serving 18 years in prison for the attempted murder so won't be doing any parkruns any time soon. The parkruns in question happened in 2012.

meanderingthrough · 24/05/2023 06:42

I've stood on the start line and chatted with this person, a friend of mine went head to head with them a lot. Someone else I know was working at UKA head office at the time of the attack. The whole thing is a tragedy. They were living as a woman not for kicks, or to grab records but because that’s who they felt they were. Running was an escape from a troubled life and I honestly think this is the wrong battle. They’re in prison now. Go and enjoy your running if that’s what you want to do. Not an excuse, they did an awful thing.

Gtsr443 · 24/05/2023 06:44

@Quinoawoman

I'm fully aware he's in prison. His participation shouldn't count and his record shouldn't stand. Obviously. 🙄

But they weren't. No matter how they felt.

A woman is not a feeling in a man's head.

They could stop allowing participants to self identify their gender, which would mean that women's records are actually held by women.

Everyone at Parkrun self identifies.
You complete a form and get your barcode. No-one has to take their birth certificate or show their genitals.

There's a massive difference between someone lying to conceal their sex, against the rules, and Parkrun endorsing the lie.
