Am I ruining the holiday?

DP has not said as much but I just feel bad.

We spent a lot of money on a much needed holiday as we’ve been super stressed - we booked a really remote, hot location with the plan being nothing but sunbathing.
We’ve got here and it’s freezing cold, and it’s expected to be until we leave. I feel gutted because a) we spent a lot of money, b) there’s literally nothing else to do and c) he suggested other locations that I said no to because I have been before, and I should’ve gone for them as they’re really hot right now.

I keep mentioning the weather, DP keeps telling me to “make the most of it”, “it’s done now”, “it’s out of our control” etc but I just hate being cold and there’s literally nothing else to do. He told me off for looking at the weather and told me not to look again. But I just am so annoyed. Also gutted as I packed only dresses.

Also, I really wanted a holiday for us to just get away from everything as we’ve been so stressed. I said let’s just put our phones down for the week, and let’s not talk about anything going on at home that’s stressful, and let’s talk about different stuff, but he keeps scrolling each time I even walk 2 metres away. He said I put too much pressure on the holiday by saying this.
I then got upset during breakfast as he wasn’t really saying much and he said he felt pressured to make conversation. He also said he’d had 3 hours sleep and I wasn’t being understanding.

I just feel like a misery guts but I can’t help but be upset, and I don’t feel like he’s understanding. Am I unreasonable?

Small correction to those who said she said they can't afford the hire car: She said it's extortionate to hire a car. That doesn't mean that they can't afford it, just that it's expensive.

IWasFunBeforeMum · 15/05/2023 13:31

We had an Ibiza trip like this. Disappointing yes. Coffee shops, museums, get drunk in a bar and speak to locals, shops.. make the most of it where you can!

ncmonday · 15/05/2023 13:02

throw some money at it and get a car

Don't get into debt you can't afford. This may be terrible advice.

She hasn't said she can't afford it, just that it's extortionate.

Superdupes · 15/05/2023 13:33

Just remember OP that the weather forecast might suddenly change again.
Are you looking on https://www.meteo.gr/index-en.cfm it's supposed to be the best for Greece.

We’re in Greece but the weather said it was gonna be scorching and it changed last minute. We looked at hiring a car but it’s extortionate.
Our plans were beaches, books, sun etc but we can’t do any of it

Where did it say that? Greek islands / Cyprus / Malta is never scorching this time of year. Cool to windy is normal. I’d chalk this up to experience & start researching alternatives. There must be something you guys can do.

Superdupes · 15/05/2023 13:34

Also could you hire the car for a couple of days if it's too expensive for the whole time?

ncmonday · 15/05/2023 13:36

Another suggestion!

My OH does this on holiday, every morning - he asks 'what's the plan for today then' in a hopeful voice. And sometimes, I do come up with the goods. (More often, I refuse to play along.)

So, I suggest you bounce out of bed/your chair and say 'what's the plan for today then' and he might actually know what there is to do. Quite possibly he has been researching local sights when he was scrolling.

So many of these threads recently where people are disappointed with a holiday in Europe in May not being hot. May is out of season. It’s rarely warm enough in any European country to lie out all day and sunbath and swim etc.Hence I wouldn’t waste my money if that’s what you’re after.

It’s not unlucky it’s normal. Especially someone who mentioned Portugal. Portugal is notorious for being quite chilly (wind from the Atlantic) right through until July/August. We had cool weather in August there once.

You may get lucky but no guarantee. I struggle to see why you booked Greece in May if all you wanted to do was sunbathe and read books.

Your DH is right and you need to reframe the holiday now. Hire some bikes and go sightseeing. Do some long walks and discover some tavernas to hole yourselves up in. Find a nice spot to read. Go visit the nearest town. This was never that likely to be a sunbathing holiday so you need to move on.

DollyParkin · 15/05/2023 13:38

Thing is, holiday or not, you always take yourself with you. Holidays aren’t magic. And to be honest, you sound a bit wingey and hard work.

AuntieJune · 15/05/2023 13:38

Google says Greece is low twenties. Not exactly arctic. You can lie on a beach with clothes on, you know! Perfect temp for walking. I think you're being a moaner, sorry

Delatron · 15/05/2023 13:40

Where are you? I’ve just looked up Corfu as that is normally the coldest place - more North and it’s says 24 degrees which is perfectly pleasant and good for this time of year.

Delatron · 15/05/2023 13:41

I’ve looked back to your post and you said you booked a really ‘hot location’ but you didn’t did you? Greece in May is not hot. So you need to accept you’ve both made a mistake and try and salvage the holiday rather than waste time being cross with the weather that is standard for this time of year.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/05/2023 13:42

I'm also struggling to see which part of Greece is 'freezing cold' right now.

It was 18-20 C here in Yorkshire over the weekend and I spent most of it out walking in a t shirt and thin 3/4 length trousers or sitting in the garden. And that's in weather a few degrees colder than it is in Greece right now.

crackofdoom · 15/05/2023 13:43

Delatron it's possible they are further north than that. The Met Office is telling me Thessaloniki is 15 degrees right now (I've seen it snow there!). I mean, maybe they're in Ioannina! 🥶 Or Thassos, or Halkidiki, or a small island in the vicinity...

luckylavender · 15/05/2023 13:45

Yes

Yes, true they could be in mainland Greece.

It still stands that was never going to be a guaranteed hot holiday in May.

Now you are there you should make the most of it and suck up the cost of car hire.

She's already said they can't afford it!

Another option is just going home early - it might be cheaper and honestly much nicer. You can then put the kettle on for a cup of tea and packet of chocolate hobnobs, while listening to Radio 4.

ooh wow! Living the dream there! Tea and biscuits and radio , like you can’t do that every day of the year.

Delatron · 15/05/2023 13:49

BBC weather says Thessaloniki sunny and 20 today. I guess it’s changeable.

This fun - let’s guess where the OP is!

UndercoverCop · 15/05/2023 13:50

We're off to Rhodes tomorrow, early to mid twenties by the looks of it, we have a car hired and a load of things to see and do, if we get the odd day/half day on the beach lovely, but if not that's fine. It's warm dry and sunny much nicer than here!
Book your hire car online not in resort, it's costing us £140 for the week, and that's for a family saloon lots of fiat 500s etc cheaper

hopeishere · 15/05/2023 13:50

Can you get public transport to a town to get a jumper or sweatshirt or something?

Go for walks? Listen to podcasts? Is there a gym?

neonjumper · 15/05/2023 13:51

I think you're getting a hard time . I love the heat ... 22c is mild to me .

I find it bizarre when a bit of sun comes out and people are wandering g around in T-shirt and shorts .

The weather was 18c here yesterday but I've had a hoodie on and this was out walking .

We went to NZ years back and every time the sun went in it was freezing ... I went to the local Kathmandu store in Auckland bought a fleece , tights and hit water bottle... being cold is miserable on holiday .

Layer up , pack some books and go and find a inland sunny spot and relax and read !

FrenchandSaunders · 15/05/2023 13:52

Radio 4, hob nobs and a cup of tea ..... I'd much rather be in Greece in the wind and rain to be honest 😂

Yes I love the heat too. Therefore I wouldn’t go to Greece in May.

Pushmepullu · 15/05/2023 13:57

I’m assuming you’re on an island and can’t get to other islands easily? If you are physically capable, go for walks to villages. There will likely be a bus a day, on the smaller islands they usually do a circuit of the island. Ask the owner of your accommodation where you might be able to buy a jumper, they are usually so hospitable they will lend you one. Go to a cafe or bar for lunch and sit and read your books, they don’t care if you sit there for hours.
Basically, it is what it is, you can’t change the weather but you can change your attitude.

crackofdoom · 15/05/2023 13:58

My guess is Halkidiki. Are there prizes?! 🤪

(OP, if I'm right: boat trip around Mount Athos, or a bus into Thessaloniki for the day/ overnight).
