Paying for our own food - dinner party

ColdBrewInSummer · 12/05/2023 18:19

we were invited to a friends house for dinner. Took a bottle of good wine with us, we wouldn’t ever go empty handed.

had a good meal, but they sent us a message after asking for money for each person! I thought this was crazy and I would never ask anyone to pay for their food if I invited them over!

AIBU to be a bit annoyed? We’ve already arranged to have them to ours in a few weeks time and I’m not asking them
for anything!

Maybe print this entire thread off and send it to them? (Then plant a couple of trees to keep the planet happy). Wow. I'd let that friendship drift. Deal breaker.

Ok so it’s bizarre but some friends can be weird and still ok! I think the test is how they behave after eating at yours - I suspect they won’t offer…

PeachyPeachTrees · 16/05/2023 21:16

When they come to yours, you must charge them £20 each and then never have diner/party with them again.

We were very much invited! They’d just moved so wanted to host at their new apartment.

Asked for just over £20 each. I’m assuming that was all the food they cooked divided by all of us.

we really enjoy their company, they’re great friends. It’s just this I can’t get over…

If they required payment they should have asked BEFORE the event, not after so that you could decide if you wanted to pay.

£20 a head is pretty much restaurant prices, you could have eaten out for that

Serves the CF’s right. If you pull a stunt like that you deserve to be front page news.

RampantIvy · 17/05/2023 22:57

I couldn't agree with you more @HoppingPavlova.

I was kind of hoping that the CFs were using Firefox as well Grin

NeedMoMoney · 18/05/2023 17:47

Did anyone see that this post was mentioned on Jeremy vine this morning 😄

RampantIvy · 18/05/2023 18:29

Oh, I missed it. I hope the CFs heard it and feel embarrassed.

CabernetSauvignon · 18/05/2023 18:51

Did they send their bank details when they asked for the money, or did you have them already?

Firsttimenannie · 19/05/2023 07:35

Ask for a VAT receipt, tell them you are putting it through your expenses.😂

Lollipop81 · 19/05/2023 11:06

i Don’t know how some people can have so much front, I would be ashamed to do this. It wouldn’t have been so bad if they had asked upfront. You are definitely not being unreasonable. Did they ask everyone or just you I wonder

HeartShapedBox · 24/05/2023 10:34

Any update, OP? Did you allow them to come for dinner? Did they offer to pay their share? Or were they shocked when you asked them for it?
