To hate people using the word 'myself' instead of just 'me'?

There's just no need. It should be 'my friend and I'...shouldn't it? Not 'myself and my friend.'

First world 🌎 problems, I know. 😂

YANBU but you will get a lot of stick for this.

Cheetahmum · 11/05/2023 11:54

This drives me mad too. It's like nails on a blackboard in my head every time I read it which is a lot in here. No idea why this has become so commonplace.

MissingMoominMamma · 11/05/2023 11:57

That wouldn’t bother me. However, I have a friend who uses tmw instead of tomorrow. I don’t know why but it irritates me to the point of stopping reading her texts! I’ve told her too!

SpeckledlyHen · 11/05/2023 11:59

I can't stand it either. I instantly judge I'm afraid.

Schroedingersimmigrant · 11/05/2023 11:59

I had email from someone in professional capacity who used it instead of every single "I" and "you" in the email...

Is she over 35? Lots of people still text speak. I think it's habbit in messages from the times long gone when we had to hit button 4x to get a letter🙈

Noorandapples · 11/05/2023 12:01

Ooh my partner says this and I hate it, he also says "whom" incorrectly a lot. But I have to seethe quietly because I bet I say annoying things too!

Catlord · 11/05/2023 12:04

So annoying and makes no sense grammatically. I think people prefer it as it feels a bit more 'complete' or formal to say the longer word even if it is a refllecive pronoun that isn't appropriate in many contexts used

Catlord · 11/05/2023 12:04

Reflexive**

Movinghousehelp · 11/05/2023 12:05

It bothers me too but not as much as using “John and I” incorrectly - sometimes “me and John” is right!

An example I see often on emails: “if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact John and I”. No. If there was no John involved you’d have said “if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me” not “contact I”, so you should say “me and John”. People are adamant “me and John” is always incorrect but sometimes it’s right.

90stalgia · 11/05/2023 12:05

It's annoying.

My personal theory about why it happens. When growing up and learning English, it's more common to make the mistake of using 'me' where 'I' should be used, e.g. 'My sister and me are going shopping' than the other way round so some people start thinking 'me' is wrong and should be avoided at all costs. Where 'I' sounds wrong to them, they substitute 'myself' because of the erroneous belief that the correct 'me' is 'bad'.

TheShellBeach · 11/05/2023 12:13

What are people's views on "perfectly fine"?
It annoys me but I can't articulate why.

sorrynotathome · 11/05/2023 12:15

Personally I would say “please contact John and/or me”. You should come last.

Malbecmoron · 11/05/2023 13:30

It's normal to use 'myself' in Scottish English, so just a regional variation-there are many!

Worldgonecrazy · 11/05/2023 13:35

Can we add people who use the word ‘utilise’ when they should use ‘use’’?

Actually i think that should be:

Can we add people who utilise the word ‘utilise’ when they should use ‘use’? 😎

nosykids · 11/05/2023 13:36

I agree with you.

BeethovenNinth · 11/05/2023 13:38

It’s grammatically incorrect. It’s said my people who want to appear important.

Me and John is never right.

This!!! It irritates the hell out of me. People are terrified of the word me for some reason. My other pet hate is "us nurses/cyclists/whatever" as opposed to "we nurses....".

Even the IMO great Taylor Swift let herself down with this one.

PedantScorner · 11/05/2023 13:40

YABU. Yourself could of posted this in Pedants' Corner instead of AIBU?.
Me and others find it annoying.
Anyways, should yourself wish to find pendants and I, were their in Pedant's Corner

Spcd · 11/05/2023 13:41

You're not wrong about the incorrect usage of 'myself' being intensely irritating. But you are wrong to think it's always 'my friend and I".

SeasonFinale · 11/05/2023 13:42

My son used "myself" in a cover letter which I proof read and I made him change it because I told him that he was neither an estate agent nor an Apprentice candidate so didn't need to speak like a knob!

He laughed and thankfully hasn't used it since.

Rhythmisadancer · 11/05/2023 13:45

we play "Myself Bingo" when watching The Apprentice - they do it A LOT - also "yourself" - "Myself will direct the video, yourself will be sub team leader"!

BotterMon · 11/05/2023 13:46

Yep - drives me mad. Usually used by those who write "we was" in an email following their "Myself and Jane" opener.

MitchellMummy · 11/05/2023 13:46

I find it common amongst fellow Scots. Doesn't grate when said with a Scottish accent!
