Don't expect a tip if you're not taking my order!

Seems a lot of places can't be bothered with actual service these days. Pizza Hut a case in point. You can't order from a human any more, only online or via a kiosk. And the kiosk has the bloody cheek to ask for a tip at the point of purchase. Seriously?? 🤣

No I won't give a tip if I'm having to do the work myself. I feel bad for the staff, in a few years they'll have robots deliver the food as well!

And we wonder why kids have reduced interpersonal skills these days.

I haven't been to Nandos in years, but back when it was all the rage I never understood it. It was a glorified McDonalds. Pitching itself as a restaurant with restaurant prices, yet the only table service you received was 'have you been to Nandos before?' and receiving your plate of food. Having to go to the till to order myself and even get my own drinks, sauce and cutlery annoyed me no end Grin

So no, I never tipped there. Luckily in the UK a tip is generally for good service and I didn't get any service!

TheRookie · 30/04/2023 07:01

To be fair, I don't tip humans either because why should I. I work in a public facing role for minimum wage and no one ever even mentions my job in those threads of who should you tip!

Definitely just a money making scheme by the company to trap people who feel they 'should' tip for whatever arbitrary reason

strawberryfluff · 30/04/2023 07:01

I don't see what's wrong with them asking if you want to give a tip. Yo Sushi used to do it on their online ordering in store. It was actually good as if you did you could easily and if you didn't you didn't.

Hillrunning · 30/04/2023 07:01

The tip isn't going to go to t machine. It goes the the wait staff who bring the food, clean tables, sweep the floor etc.

QuintanaRoo · 30/04/2023 07:02

Oh I agree, I was annoyed when I went to Pizza Hut recently and won’t return. Btw, the robot waitresses are a thing. Also they’ve developed robot kitchen workers which can make pizzas and work the fryers!

Don't expect a tip if you're not taking my order!
strawberryfluff · 30/04/2023 07:03

That and the massive staff shortage and increased costs, they've got to do what they can to survive.

MrsToothyBitch · 30/04/2023 07:03

You need to watch the X Files episode where they eat in an automated restaurant & Mulder doesn't tip... the robots aren't happy!

JMSA · 30/04/2023 07:03

Last time I was in Pizza Hut - a month or two ago - everything was done by a human (taking order, bringing food and bill, etc).

I have never "got" Nandos either - mediocre food, expensive for what it is and I have to pretty much serve myself. If I go for a meal, I like to sit at my table and be served.

We are considering going on a cruise for the first time later this year. When looking at prices, we can pay for the cruise only, or All Inclusive which includes tips, at a set % depending on what type of cabin we choose. Surely, it is not a tip you are paying, it is the staffs salary. To me, the tip should be a personal thank you, in cash, to the person providing the service. If you pay via the order terminal by card, how do you know the tip goes to the staff on top of their wages and not into the companies profits?

We must live in the sticks.

We went to pizza hut during the Easter holidays. All done via a qr code, we won't be returning as it was really expensive for what it was. But I have found that recently everywhere.
I tip in USA etc where wages are low or they are taxed on expected tips but UK there is nmw etc so no I don't tip.

FrenchandSaunders · 30/04/2023 07:37

I was asked if I wanted to leave a tip at a pub the other day. No food, I just stood at the bar and ordered two drinks that were then placed in front of me 🤷🏼‍♀️

TeenDivided · 30/04/2023 07:44

My Granny who was born in 1905, and who always drove with gloves and a hat, taught me how to tip in hotels. She said you tip well on the first day so they know you appreciate good service, then not during the stay, but again at the end.

All wasted as we never stay in that kind of hotel. Smile

I tip if they take our order at the table, not if we have to queue and pay to give the order.

Did you buy individual pizzas?

We find the Big Sharer good value. 2 x sharing pizzas, 2x Sides, 2x Individual Desserts and Unlimited Salad for £50, fed loads of us! (We’re not big on dessert).

SunnySaturdayMorning · 30/04/2023 07:48

You shouldn’t be tipping anyway. All you’re doing is prolonging low wages and poor working conditions while giving employers an excuse not to improve things.

Tipping is not a good deed, it just makes you feel like it is.

No we did the buffet as there are 3, 1 veggie so can't share 1 pizza (which would have been ideal) but there actually wasn't a lot of choice and stock was low, we know we'll go elsewhere. It was about £40

drpet49 · 30/04/2023 07:49

Tipping is outdated and unnecessary in this country.

Ah ok. We find the Big Sharer better value than the buffet, as the pizzas are better. And everyone gets a salad bowl to fill up unlimitedly.

100% this.

I think it would be too much for us in the amount of food. Which is a shame, as I think it would be more value
