Don't expect a tip if you're not taking my order!

Seems a lot of places can't be bothered with actual service these days. Pizza Hut a case in point. You can't order from a human any more, only online or via a kiosk. And the kiosk has the bloody cheek to ask for a tip at the point of purchase. Seriously?? 🤣

No I won't give a tip if I'm having to do the work myself. I feel bad for the staff, in a few years they'll have robots deliver the food as well!

And we wonder why kids have reduced interpersonal skills these days.

Center Parcs can fuck off charging a thousand a night for a shabby cabin and then trying to save money on service with a robot.

DustyLee123 · 30/04/2023 08:14

There was a Sam and Cat episode where a robot brought the food.

The tip isn't going to go to t machine. It goes the the wait staff who bring the food, clean tables, sweep the floor etc.

Why does carrying a plate of food across a room and interrupting your meal to ask if everything is OK and then panicking if the answer is anything except 'lovely thanks' deserving of a tip when endless other people like cleaners, care workers get paid the same but never get tips?

Bella Italia at Center Parcs has robots delivering the food to the table!

Belfast Airport has these same robots delivering food, they also get you to scan their app at your table to place your order which finishes with an request for a tip.

You shouldn’t be tipping anyway. All you’re doing is prolonging low wages and poor working conditions while giving employers an excuse not to improve things.

Tipping is not a good deed, it just makes you feel like it is.

I think you are telling yourself this to justify being stingy. Tipping culture and practice is totally engrained and not going away however much you make this kind of passive protest. So if you are not tipping at a place where it is the norm to do so and you have received good service, you are the problem.

Fuerza · 30/04/2023 08:43

nandos so annoying, you order your food and have to queue up to pay, but then if you want another glass of wine you have to get up and queue again Confused not a relaxing experience at all. would never go back.

Yep

Took dc to Bella Italia as a treat in the Easter holiday, won't be returning!
Only way to order was online, no 4g signal so was told to log into their Wi-Fi. To do this I had to give all my details, took ages to set up. Managed to order, asked the waitress if we could order more drinks but was told I had to do online again! I didn't bother! I feel sorry for the staff, she told me this new system meant they were cutting staff.

Agree. It's not mean to not tip when the staff are earning per hour. You don't tip the person who takes your call in a call centre. It's just ridiculous. I'm not British or American but tipping is a social convention that isn't appropriate and we need to resist it. I'm in Europe, but same applies here, serving staff on same money as staff in a call centre or working in Creche or on a checkout. You don't tip the creche worker or the person who scanned your groceries

MrBit · 30/04/2023 08:52

@UmbilicusSuperficialis , I like many others don't get any tips for doing the job I'm paid to do. I can't afford to tip everytime
It's an extra not a right

Absolutely agree, food/drink industry is not the only customer service environment. Why this belief they should get extra money for being 'nice' I don't know, its practically blackmail- give us extra money or you'll get bad service.
And this cruise/USA way of operating that you MUST tip? What will they do on the cruise, tip you overboard if you don't?

Alliolly · 30/04/2023 09:03

That's a photo from Yo Sushi. They have them in a couple of branches, but it's more of an attraction I think

Flowerblooms · 30/04/2023 09:04

Recently in Pizza Hut myself, we was greeted at the door told it was cashless and that there was a code on the table to order, all before we had sat down. We was then told we could pick what table we wanted and that was it regarding any other interactions throughout our meal with staff there apart from when we got up to leave and they shouted across the bar area bye.
Plates/glasses/bowls were all next to the buffet area. Cutlery already on the table etc. We did not leave a tip.

TiredOfCleaning · 30/04/2023 09:07

I have and old phone and it does not do apps or whatever the coirrect grammar is. I just tell restaurants or places like Pizza Hut 'My phone doesn't do that' when they suggest QR code ordering etc and it has never ever been a problem. They just send someone over. I recommend it.

But I agree about Nandos. The concept is lost on me and it is so expensive!!

I hate tipping.... as a pp said, it perpetuates the underpayment of a decent wage IMO And i hate the 'optional service charge' automatically added. I never have the balls to get it removed.

DD has a job in hospitality, not Nandos or similar but the tips are split between ALL the staff, not just waiting or bar staff, but also the folk in the kitchen.

She very much appreciates her tips!

Batalax · 30/04/2023 09:12

I’ve seen the same robot as the Bella Italia one at an independent. I assumed it was an attraction for the kids.
Now a bit horrified at the wider implications, especially the robot cooking pizza bit.

GoodChat · 30/04/2023 09:14

Why would you tip before you've been given good service, in any case?!

Bluesclues1 · 30/04/2023 09:20

The robot is also at las iguanas at Woburn CP. I’ve seen them at a local pub too.

it doesn’t actually remove the need for serving staff, it just ensures all plates are delivered at the same time - the waiter follows it and unloads/loads the robot. It saves them lugging lots of plates too and minimises spill risk I suppose!

Maverickess · 30/04/2023 09:21

Look on the bright side of automated and robot service - no human errors to ruin people's experiences any more, no snarky waiting staff to look at you funny or have an off tone, it'll literally be the perfect service people demand because the robot will be programmed to do so and unless it breaks down that's all it does.
What's not to like?
🤷🏼‍♀️

Fundays12 · 30/04/2023 09:22

I was in pizza hut recently and told to order online or someone would come. I ended up having to go find staff 3 times as I couldn't order online and got ignored, couldn't get drinks delivered then couldn't pay. The service was dire and the food wasn't great. I won't be back.

Iltakethat · 30/04/2023 09:23

I don't tip when we have to order our own food, no.

calimali · 30/04/2023 09:24

I hate places that automatically add a service charge so that you have to ask for it to be removed. Pay your staff more!!!

I earn just over minimum wage in the public sector No one tips me.

Belledan1 · 30/04/2023 09:25

I want to a buffett place. They did bring a round of drinks and take the plates away but never smiled once. Obviously we served ourselves. They put a massive service charge on the bill. I refused to pay it. I just left a couple of quid on the table.

Abacusporttaco · 30/04/2023 09:26

It’s more about them saving money and laying off staff in order to replace them with undemanding machinery. There’s still some poor underpaid people behind the scenes. Assuming the money even filters through, the money would be for them.
