Don't expect a tip if you're not taking my order!

Seems a lot of places can't be bothered with actual service these days. Pizza Hut a case in point. You can't order from a human any more, only online or via a kiosk. And the kiosk has the bloody cheek to ask for a tip at the point of purchase. Seriously?? 🤣

No I won't give a tip if I'm having to do the work myself. I feel bad for the staff, in a few years they'll have robots deliver the food as well!

And we wonder why kids have reduced interpersonal skills these days.

You need to watch the X Files episode where they eat in an automated restaurant & Mulder doesn't tip... the robots aren't happy!

I love this episode.

They rely on tips in the US. Employer's only pay about $2 an hour. They rush you to finish. They want you out so they can get more customers at that table for more tips.

Inthesamesinkingboat · 30/04/2023 10:32

@Lemondrizzlerain Zizzi and Ask are part of the same company so it really really doesn’t matter!!! All the food procurement is the same so it actually the same stuff in both

Is the food purposefully cheaper because customers will tip?

I hate this. I went to Pizza Hut with my mum (breaking up a long journey) and the waitress showed us to our table and started saying “you can down load the app…” I interrupted “I’m tired, my phone battery is low and I just want to order food. Please can we do that the normal way?” She said that was fine and did so. I don’t want the app on my phone because I’ve not been to Pizza Hut for 10 years so it’s unlikely I’ll be using it again soon and it takes longer faffing. Parking is another one that takes longer - different app for different locations and the glitch and take so much longer than old style pay at the meter parking. Happy to Apple Pay at the meter.

i like technology but not when it takes longer!

katepilar · 30/04/2023 10:53

I have already seen a robot trolley bringing food at a fast food place..

Blinky21 · 30/04/2023 10:58

If the tip goes to the staff working behind the scenes for minimum wage it's fine by me

I had a lovely meal in an independent Nepalese restaurant last evening. Wonderful friendly staff, freshly cooked food, complimentary poppadoms and dips and a green salad on the side, and paid less than I would have at Pizza Hut or Nando’s. Definitely left a tip there. I do not understand the appeal of chains.

I love Nepalese food. Could you tell me where that is, please? Or dm me!

HurdyGurdy19 · 30/04/2023 11:01

We had a takeaway last night. We've ordered from them several times before, via FoodHub, and I always at 10-15% tip for the driver, as these days we never have much cash.

Last night, the driver said that much as he appreciated the gesture, when tips are added online, the workers don't ever receive them.

So in future, I'll make sure I've got cash in the house and will hand it directly to the driver. And will continue to wonder who the hell has stolen my money.

mynewusername2023 · 30/04/2023 11:04

I only tip in the UK if it's a place I go to regularly or if I get brilliant service. Otherwise I don't bother. We always tip well in the US.

Recently in Pizza Hut myself, we was greeted at the door told it was cashless and that there was a code on the table to order, all before we had sat down. We was then told we could pick what table we wanted and that was it regarding any other interactions throughout our meal with staff there apart from when we got up to leave and they shouted across the bar area bye.
Plates/glasses/bowls were all next to the buffet area. Cutlery already on the table etc. We did not leave a tip.

Why we don't go to Pizza Hut any more.

Beachbreak2411 · 30/04/2023 11:13

So they don’t deliver your food to you? Don’t cook it? Clean up after you? You are obnoxious. Tip them. Or stay home and do it yourself. I loathe people like you. They didn’t chose to have the order or yourself! I’m sure it goes wrong more often than it works. Give the minimum wage person a tip and be kind.

That's terrible. I always tip the Deliveroo drivers. I'll ask them next time if they get the tips.

😂 you're being silly. I work in a pub and you're still being silly (but then I don't expect tips!)

You shouldn’t be tipping anyway. All you’re doing is prolonging low wages and poor working conditions while giving employers an excuse not to improve things.

Tipping is not a good deed, it just makes you feel like it is.

I agree. It just enables the employer to pay a crap salary!

Why should people get tips for doing their jobs? It's batshit.

Tips should be something people get for going above and beyond normal expectations, not for just providing basic service.

User17439876 · 30/04/2023 11:28

Tipping is a relic from the days before NMW, paying by card has fortunately stopped a lot of this because people used to round up cash to tip.

No, she didn’t say that at all. It isn’t an app - you didn’t need to download anything or store any app on your phone.

It’s a simple QR code to a website. Next time try listening instead of rudely interrupting.

Do you really think if everyone stops tipping places like Pizza Hut or Nando's are going to say oh we'd better put wages up?
Of course they won't. They can get away with paying shit wages so will keep on doing it.

They weren’t forced to work in hospitality, millions of people work for mw that doesn’t entitle them to a tip. People on mw work in care homes wiping up bodily fluids but they don’t get tipped & they are far more worthy of one than someone who brings a few plates if food to a table & clears them up afterwards

In lots of places the wages are not shit at all. Our favourite local restaurant (sort of a bar and cafe and restaurant were advertising on their website. £12.50 an hour for wait staff and front of house £36 k. That is an immense salary IMO!! (South East.)

Granted- that is only one example and the only one i can say with authority because I saw the actual job ad myself.

ichundich · 30/04/2023 11:40

YANBU. I was in Dunkin Donut the other day (not my choice) and was told I must order via the in-store screens by one of the very bored-looking girls behind the till. Absolutely ridiculous.

Ridiculous.

Loads of people who work hard are making minimum wage or just slightly above it, including care workers and teaching assistants. Do you tip them for their hard work in difficult roles?
