Don't expect a tip if you're not taking my order!

Seems a lot of places can't be bothered with actual service these days. Pizza Hut a case in point. You can't order from a human any more, only online or via a kiosk. And the kiosk has the bloody cheek to ask for a tip at the point of purchase. Seriously?? 🤣

No I won't give a tip if I'm having to do the work myself. I feel bad for the staff, in a few years they'll have robots deliver the food as well!

And we wonder why kids have reduced interpersonal skills these days.

I ordered a dress online from Saint & Sofia recently and at the checkout I was asked if I wanted to leave a tip! Erm......no.

whynotwhatknot · 30/04/2023 15:01

I dont tend to tip alot here maybe hairdressers and nail salon because i know them quite well

its different in the usa-they rely on tips to make up for very low wages and always make the extra effort for it

So they don’t deliver your food to you? Don’t cook it? Clean up after you? You are obnoxious. Tip them. Or stay home and do it yourself. I loathe people like you. They didn’t chose to have the order or yourself! I’m sure it goes wrong more often than it works. Give the minimum wage person a tip and be kind.

That's what their salary/wage is for, just like mine is to do my specific job as well, just like everyone else.

TeenLifeMum · 30/04/2023 17:28

@SunnySaturdayMorning she said to down load the app. Either way, my battery was on red, I’d just driven for 4 hours having just said my goodbyes to my dying grandmother and I just wanted to order a pizza and eat. I wasn’t rude. I was very polite and gave a tip at the end.

They don’t tell you to download the app.

They point you towards the QR code, which you’d have known if you’d let her finish, and they also let you know if you have any trouble they can do the order for you. Again, which you’d have known if you’d let her finish.

You were not polite. Interrupting someone and not listening to them is rude.

(And as an aside, by tipping you are contributing to low wages and poor working conditions, so that wasn’t a good deed either.)

The Co op uses those robots as well, I think if you see them queuing at pedestrian traffic lights you are meant to help by pressing the button. I often see them trundling through our town in Northants

I do. I’d much rather use a QR code/app/machine to order. No mistakes, quick and easy, no waiting around for the staff.

Me too for the same reasons.

I also like being able to see different options for sides, what you can add/remove etc. I know you can actually "ask" a human waitress, but so many times you get the impression it's a real imposition for them to change things, with over-emphasised crossings out on their order pad, or sighs etc. If I don't want chips with a main course, usually there's an "edit" option on the app where you can delete chips and replace with say a jacket potato or mash, or even "mix n match" different aspects of different meals, i.e. a kind of "build your own" main course where you take the meat from one main course and put it with sides, salads or vegs from different main courses. I really like that kind of flexibility.

TeenLifeMum · 30/04/2023 20:20

@SunnySaturdayMorning my listening skills are good and this was 3 weeks ago. She said scan the wrong code and download the app to order. She didn’t say website. I was there, you weren’t 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don't know, it's probably quite fun for DC and its not like anyone goes to Bella Pasta for the service, ambience or food for that matter.

User17439876 · 01/05/2023 06:50

A lot of these places are having to close some shops, probably because they are shit and you may as well just go to McDonald's.

Juanne · 01/05/2023 07:03

@Lincslady53 You can tell them that you do not wish to pay that tip. Also you can tip individually in cash if you wish.

Exactly, and I can't see a solution tbh.

There's probably a lot more restaurants than can be supported, especially when they need to charge more to remain profitable and people's disposable income has reduced so they either can't afford to eat out so much or at least reduce the frequency based on a value for money decision. In particular, exactly how many chain Italians do we need?

The expansion of chain restaurants over the last decade or so has been fuelled by cheap debt which has now come to an end. The amount of debt propping up these places is eye watering. It's likely that there will be further closures over the next few years.

But hopefully we'll tend back to a situation where there aren't so many bland, overpriced chains selling reheated rubbish from Brakes and the nice independent places that serve good food survive.

Gymnopedie · 01/05/2023 07:28

The rationale for tipping has changed over time. It used to be that you paid the bill as that was what your meals and drinks cost, and you left a tip only if you felt that the staff and service had been exceptionally good and people had gone above and beyond their basic job description. Somewhere along the line it morphed into being expected regardless and even considered part of the staff's wages (or the company's profits). I'd like to go back to what tipping used to be.

I regularly tip without hesitation but this attitude pisses me off. When eating out, I am paying for them make the food, to deliver the food to my table and clear it after I leave. This should all be included in the cost of the meal - there is a reason why the cost of a pizza at a restaurant is significantly more than the raw ingredients!!

Many of us have worked in minimum wage roles where we have not/ could not receive tips. What makes one person more worthy than another?!!

I always confirm with staff that tips go to those who are working and not to the restaurant owners. As long as this is the case, I happily tip but if a staff member expressed this kind of attitude, I would be giving nothing

Hellsbells89 · 01/05/2023 07:44

How can they ask for a tip before you've even been served, I find that baffling. I went to our local garden centre cafe recently where you have to order at the desk and pay for the items there and then, not unusual for a cafe, the card machine asking for a tip! No way I'm tipping, I haven't been served or eaten anything yet!

Talkingfrog · 03/05/2023 08:34

Totally agree.
We booked our local pizza hut. No mention was made of having to order on the app when we booked so we only found out when we arrived.

We got there and were seated.

It was early after covid so understandable sone things weren't available but i am not talking of just one or two minor items.

They had no milk so couldn't do tea, coffee or any drink that needed milk.( they were located opposite a 24 hour tesco so I assume there was a reason no one could get milk from there). Other drinks weren't available either.

There were set salad options that didn't suit us, but this wasn't mentioned on the menu beforehand ( harvester were operating a salad bar but they served it).

There were sides we wanted that they didn't have either.

We ended up not staying.

I suggested to the duty manager that we should have been made aware of something such as no milk before or whilst we were being seated, instead of having to find out when trying to order. She seemed to think this was a good idea, but didn't seem to have though of it herself.
Went back once after I think, but can't go now as the store was closed.

SunnySaturdayMorning · 03/05/2023 09:23

@Talkingfrog Yes, there was a reason. If you run out of an ingredient in a chain restaurant like that you cannot just nip across the road to Tesco and buy another brand.

All your allergen, cooking and advertising information is based on the brand your supplier provides. If you then went out and bought a different brand it could cause multiple issues as customers base their choices on the information readily put out there, often online, from these types of places.

BessieSurtees · 03/05/2023 17:46

Regards tipping and minimum wage. My niece asked a local restaurant to take the discretionary service charge off her bill. The waitress questioned whether she had not provided good service and explained it was just like leaving a tip. My niece replied, the service was fine but I don't think you have ever left me a tip for looking after your grandma and tending to her personal care and we are both on minimum wage.

Apparently my niece was a carer in the home where the waitresses grandmother lived. The waitress did visit her grandmother but had never as much as acknowledged my niece even when in the same room. There are so many minimum wage jobs that work as hard as any waitress.

Talkingfrog · 05/05/2023 23:44

@SunnySaturdayMorning which is fair enough, and I said that there was probably a reason why they couldn't do it. It doesn't change the fact that there was nothing on the website to say that you had to order online, and nothing was said to us when we sat down that there were basic items on the menu that were not available. We couldn't have hot drinks, which two of us wanted, they didn't have any of the children's drinks my daughter wanted. There was no garlic bread and a other sides weren't available either. I can understand items not being available at that time but we only found out when we tried to order and couldn't find any hot drinks. I ended up asking thinking I was looking in the wrong place, and only at that point were we told that they had no milk so couldn't do hot drinks. We had been there over 20 minutes by then. Probably explains why there were only two other tables being used when we were there.
I have been in a pizza hut before when they were out of pasta - they told us while seating us so before we even looked at the menu so we knew from the start.

A lot of those QR codes are fake, I wouldn't be using any of them, they are the modern equivalent of getting your details in cash machines
