Don't expect a tip if you're not taking my order!

Seems a lot of places can't be bothered with actual service these days. Pizza Hut a case in point. You can't order from a human any more, only online or via a kiosk. And the kiosk has the bloody cheek to ask for a tip at the point of purchase. Seriously?? 🤣

No I won't give a tip if I'm having to do the work myself. I feel bad for the staff, in a few years they'll have robots deliver the food as well!

And we wonder why kids have reduced interpersonal skills these days.

Vote with your feet, don't go to such places OP. You will not starve.

Tips should be earned.

Beachbreak2411 · 30/04/2023 11:13

So they don’t deliver your food to you? Don’t cook it? Clean up after you? You are obnoxious. Tip them. Or stay home and do it yourself. I loathe people like you. They didn’t chose to have the order or yourself! I’m sure it goes wrong more often than it works. Give the minimum wage person a tip and be kind.

For all of this they are paid a wage, I assume you tip every minimum wage person you come across as if not you are obnoxious

flutterbyebaby · 30/04/2023 11:54

Why do people go to places such as Pizza hut, Nandos, TGI, Zizzi and moan about having to queue to order, pay etc. These places are not restaurants. Go to independent places and maybe you will get a better experience

Laiste · 30/04/2023 11:58

Last time we went to pizza hut it was a bloody fiasco. I had booked the table online and in the 'need to know' bit i said It was a birthday meal and i'd like to pop in 5 mins early and bring a balloon for the table and a cake and some candles for the waiting staff to bring out once we had finished eating.

We got there and no one had any idea about any of that but let us go and put the balloon ready. All fine. Handed over the cake to a bemused looking woman who said they hadn't got candles and ''weren't really allowed to do that any more anyway''. Confused

One of us had to go to the nearest tesco and buy a box of matches while the rest of us sat and waited. There were us and one other table in use.

Staff all leaning near the buffet chatting.

Once we were all there we needed to order on 3 separate bills. One set of us ordered straight away with no problems. Second set had a bit of trouble but ordered, and the third - well half the stuff they wanted was unavailable (quite basic stuff) so they took a while to get their order sorted and was still trying to get it to go through when the first order arrived 🙄

Once we had finally all got our food and eaten it i gave the nod for the cake and it came up without the candles lit and we did it ourselves 🙄

I think the woman who had seated us and bought up the unlit cake felt awkward and kept hanging about making daft jokes and banging on about her own birthday at Disney land 🙄🙄

Then the option to tip!! Yeah - no!

Mummyexpat · 30/04/2023 12:00

Tips in restaurants are often divided up between the front of house staff and the chefs, KP’s etc., so there are lots of people doing work that may (or may not!) deserve a tip, you just don’t witness it.

Kazzyhoward · 30/04/2023 12:02

Hillrunning · 30/04/2023 07:01

The tip isn't going to go to t machine. It goes the the wait staff who bring the food, clean tables, sweep the floor etc.

Who are paid minimum wage, just like all the other "manual" workers in shops, care homes, etc., who likewise sweep the floors, serve you, etc.

There's simply no longer any justification for tips in the UK and other countries with a minimum wage. Fair enough in other countries where waiting staff get paid a lot less than other "service" staff. After all, in some countries, waiting staff don't actually get paid at all - they rely on "tips" which is effectively their wage!

You need to watch the X Files episode where they eat in an automated restaurant & Mulder doesn't tip... the robots aren't happy!

Oo which episode? Missed that one!

Took teen and her friends to Pizza Hut in Milton Keynes couple of months back and it was all cashless, ordering via QR code etc and didn't enjoy the experience. In Gourmet Burger in Leamington Spa last month and they wanted the same but option to go to the bar and order there (and speak to a real human) which was what we choose to do. Seems like a lot of the chains are doing this and I personally don't enjoy the experience.

Irequireausername · 30/04/2023 12:17

Just put the correct price on the menu and i'll decide if I want to pay that amount or not.

Don't pretend to price it and then ask for more money.

Does anyone apart from the businesses themselves? Of course it makes sense for them - fewer waiting staff required, fewer mistakes between FOH and kitchen, customer data that can be used for marketing. To the poster above suggesting to go to an independent place instead - lucky if you've still got them where you live. I generally pretend that I don't have a smartphone on me or that it's out of charge.

deepspace9 · 30/04/2023 12:32

I hardly ever tip. Really don't understand why anyone would tbh...

I got asked in pizza express by the waiter not to put the tip on the card as it got shared with the kitchen staff but to give cash!

Same, we were told that if we gave a couple of pounds cash they’d get more than if we tipped £10 on the machine.

I love Nepalese food. Could you tell me where that is, please? Or dm me!

It’s called Yak and Yeti in Fife, Scotland. https://yakandyetileven.co.uk/

I went to a hipster burger joint in Brighton recently. You had to order your food at the counter. They gave you a buzzer that went off when it was ready so you could go back up to the counter to collect it. The staff member behind the counter “helpfully” told me I might want to make two trips as there was a lot to carry.

As I made one of my two trips, I saw a QR code in the window that you could scan “to tip our amazing team”. For what?! At least we got a laugh out of it…

Those restaurant buzzers have been around since the 1990s, but yes, I agree the tip request is funny!

No, she didn’t say that at all. It isn’t an app - you didn’t need to download anything or store any app on your phone.

It’s a simple QR code to a website. Next time try listening instead of rudely interrupting.

Why? She didn’t want to order online, whether it was an app, QR code or via psychic message.

ThinWomansBrain · 30/04/2023 12:44

the Bella Italia robot thing - so you have to grovel around at just above floor level to retrieve your food?

I do. I’d much rather use a QR code/app/machine to order. No mistakes, quick and easy, no waiting around for the staff.

It’s still humans preparing the food, so there are still mistakes. We order via QR in Nandos and have had items missing.

We’ve also had a steady supply of Deliveroos due to illness, and have had to flag missing items/wrong food.

Her objection was having too many apps on her phone, and it’s also rude to interrupt, especially when you’re not even listening to the person in the first place (because it isn’t an app).

ThinWomansBrain · 30/04/2023 12:55

went to a local non-chain restaurant recently - the tip was a set % of the bill, which I dislike.
BUT - fabulous friendly service, conversation about the dishes, waiter was also pretty good as a sommelier with recommendations on wine, opportunity to taste a couple before ordering.
Fabulous evening, the 12.5% was well worth it.

Right, but there’s no mistakes with the order itself because I ordered it. It’s still a far better experience than relying and waiting on waiting staff.

They weren’t friends having a lovely chat. She was trying to order a pizza.

Irrelevant. Interrupting someone and not listening to them is exceptionally rude regardless of whether it’s your mother, your best friend or a staff member.

It’s not okay to treat anyone like that. It’s just basic manners and respect.
