Don't expect a tip if you're not taking my order!

Seems a lot of places can't be bothered with actual service these days. Pizza Hut a case in point. You can't order from a human any more, only online or via a kiosk. And the kiosk has the bloody cheek to ask for a tip at the point of purchase. Seriously?? 🤣

No I won't give a tip if I'm having to do the work myself. I feel bad for the staff, in a few years they'll have robots deliver the food as well!

And we wonder why kids have reduced interpersonal skills these days.

I had a lovely meal in an independent Nepalese restaurant last evening. Wonderful friendly staff, freshly cooked food, complimentary poppadoms and dips and a green salad on the side, and paid less than I would have at Pizza Hut or Nando’s. Definitely left a tip there. I do not understand the appeal of chains.

We went to pizza hut during the Easter holidays. All done via a qr code, we won't be returning as it was really expensive for what it was. But I have found that recently everywhere.
I tip in USA etc where wages are low or they are taxed on expected tips but UK there is nmw etc so no I don't tip.

Totally agree re the tipping!! Bloody annoys me all the amount of tipping that is expected for certain job roles.

I think you are telling yourself this to justify being stingy. Tipping culture and practice is totally engrained and not going away however much you make this kind of passive protest. So if you are not tipping at a place where it is the norm to do so and you have received good service, you are the problem.

Unless you are in a tipping culture like the US it really isn't engrained at all in the UK.

It isn't stingy they are paid minimum wage same as many who don't receive tips.

And you should receive good service as a minimum without requiring a tip.

People like you are the problem who make it the customers job to ensure the staff get paid a decent wage.

Bananarama77 · 30/04/2023 09:35

I think tipping should only be reserved for exceptional service & I think it’s uncouth to ask for one. Generally when my DH & I eat out we tend to go to better places than we take the kids (proper restaurants not pubs or chains) so we may well leave a tip then for the serving staff but never would I tip in pubs or chains in-fact I refuse to pay sneaky service charges added to bills in these basic places I think it’s down right rude to add these charges for doing absolutely nothing

Why does carrying a plate of food across a room and interrupting your meal to ask if everything is OK and then panicking if the answer is anything except 'lovely thanks' deserving of a tip when endless other people like cleaners, care workers get paid the same but never get tips?

It doesn't. Not in anyway. But you weren't arguing that in your op, you were arguing that partly automated restaurants shouldn't ask for tips, I was pointing out their logic to you.

bookworm44 · 30/04/2023 09:38

Maverickess · 30/04/2023 09:21

Look on the bright side of automated and robot service - no human errors to ruin people's experiences any more, no snarky waiting staff to look at you funny or have an off tone, it'll literally be the perfect service people demand because the robot will be programmed to do so and unless it breaks down that's all it does.
What's not to like?
🤷🏼‍♀️

I would agree with you aside from the fact it will put even more people out of a job.

SchoolTripDrama · 30/04/2023 09:39

@mainsfed FIFTY POUNDS?!?!?!?! That's insane!

Lemondrizzlerain · 30/04/2023 09:40

We went to a chain restaurant recently where you order via app / QR codes and pay via app.

I'm normally a tipper for good service but the only interaction we had with humans was placing the food on the table.

DHs pasta wasn't cooked properly either. Just badly microwaved. (There was even a bit of plastic wrapper left on the plate!)

I could have stayed at home and microwaved my own pasta 😂 I think it was Zizzi? (Or could have been Ask. I can't remember!)

All of which they get paid for.

Yes they do get paid, that's what a job is.

mondaytosunday · 30/04/2023 09:45

In the US at a bakery at the register the card reader asked if we wanted to tip. Like if you went in to Greggs to buy a donut and they asked ir a tip! I looked at the girl and looked down and pressed 'no'.
At the local café you order at the counter and they bring the food out. The card reader is set up to ask for a tip but in the dozen or more times I've been there the staff themselves press no before you have your card read. They are nice staff I usually do leave something as they do deliver the food, bring water, clean up etc.
Years ago in central London I ordered a coffee and a service charge was added to the bill - never went there again. To the cafe, I live in London...😁.
I don't think the 'i have a minimum wage job I don't get tips' is relevant. Some industries you tip some you don't. I always tip housekeeping in hotels. I used to work retail and you didn't get tips doing that.

Belledan1 · 30/04/2023 09:45

I got asked in pizza express by the waiter not to put the tip on the card as it got shared with the kitchen staff but to give cash!

Daffodilwoman · 30/04/2023 09:46

My grandma always gave the dustbin men a tip at Christmas and they gave her a Christmas card. That was when they carried the dustbin on their back and returned it to your door.

I hope you didn't tip at all, the cheeky beggar!

Rockbird · 30/04/2023 09:49

Just on the cruise thing, you can ask for that to be removed at the purser's desk. Loads of people do it, there's always a queue! Not ideal to have to get it taken off but it's doable.

SchoolTripDrama · 30/04/2023 09:49

@UmbilicusSuperficialis I presume you tip the checkout operator who scans your groceries? The lady at the till in Boots/TK Maxx/Next etc? The Meter reader? Doctor's Receptionist? Pharmacist? The guy who serves you in Kwik Fit? Petrol station staff member who serves you?

Bogofftosomewherehot · 30/04/2023 09:51

I ordered a bacon bap and coffee in 4* hotel lounge the other day (not even the restaurant). Service was appalling. Got the bill and they'd added 10% tip automatically and when she handed me the card machine it was on the "add a tip yes/no" screen. Cheeky buggers.

Exactly, a tip is given for service over & above not just for doing your job which you are getting paid for, earning minimum wage doesn’t entitle you to a tip

Well yes, although there is a shortage at the moment in hospitality. They could always just go and get a better job like is usually suggested if people don't like the poor wages and conditions in hospitality?

Incorrect.

Tipping culture isn’t ingrained in UK at all; it’s entirely optional and mostly used by those who want to feel as though they’re doing good and aren’t able to understand how they are perpetuating low wages and poor working conditions.

Bogofftosomewherehot · 30/04/2023 09:54

"My grandma always gave the dustbin men a tip at Christmas and they gave her a Christmas card. That was when they carried the dustbin on their back and returned it to your door."

I still tip my bin men, they'll happy take loads of stuff when I have a good clear out!

SchoolTripDrama · 30/04/2023 09:54

@SunnySaturdayMorning Well said!

Whenever I order a takeaway to be delivered, I always feel awful if I don't have £1.50 to give the driver. Then I have to remind myself that I almost certainly earn a lot less than him (I'm a disabled widowed parent on disability benefits without the option to work)

Erex · 30/04/2023 09:56

YANBU. We recently went to a pub that serves food - an independent one, there's a separate dining area and the food is nice. Maybe a little overpriced, but we were happy to pay it.
They added £15 to the bill as an "optional" service charge! We're in the UK, so staff get a wage regardless (I know this place pays above min wage), and they had automatically added it to the total - so that people feel too embarrassed to ask for it to be removed, I imagine. We did ask for it to be taken off, and the thing is we would have normally left a tip, but felt put off at having the price of a meal added on without even asking, or gificng the option to choose your own amount.

AlinaSquareQueen · 30/04/2023 10:01

I’m almost always happy to give an approx 10% tip to waiting staff in restaurants.

However, I very recently went out for a family meal to a fairly posh restaurant, and they added 15% service charge to the bill. Needless to say, my DF (who was kindly paying), was too embarrassed to ask ‘when did service charge become 15%?’

My Dsis holidays in the USA a lot, and reckons tipping expectations there are creeping up to over 20% now.

I guess this all means that some employers are finding ways to not pay staff fairly.

angeltop · 30/04/2023 10:14

When the final bill became astronomical for the food served, that’s when I stopped tipping.

Strawberrydelight78 · 30/04/2023 10:24

Our local pizza hut closed sigh they are obviously struggling to keep the one's still open going. It was going to be a Tim Hortons but they pulled out. So it's just empty in the retail park rotting away.
