He stepped on a spider

With glee/relish…

Man I like and have been attracted to for a while…(we’re not together)
There was a medium sized spider on the floor, one of the women in our party (not keen on spiders) asked him to remove it/get rid of it. He came over and stamped right on it with his big foot, sort of scraped his foot back, laughed and said ‘It’s the circle of life’ and walked off.

Aibu to have gone off him, pretty much immediately?

So disappointed

I’m just thinking about the mosquito thing…would swatting a mozzie be cruel and hypocritical too (I’ve done it) 😬

Gosh i hate spiders. Would have stamped on it with vengeance 🙈

Alwaysrushingaroundffs · 20/04/2023 23:00

Also…ants..spraying them or sweeping them up if they were in your kitchen for example 🤷🏻‍♀️

Do people kill wasps? Whats difference?

This made me laugh as my lovely, kind Grandad named all of the spiders in the house "Fred" and would move them to the en-suite bathroom in a spare bedroom that nobody used so my Nan wouldn't freak out.

He'd open the window for them in case they wanted out but he'd leave them in there complete with a bath mat in case they wanted somewhere "soft" to lie 😂

Aww. I love this.

Throw this one back and hold out for a guy like elm's Grandad OP.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 20/04/2023 23:04

The only male in my life is my ds and he's petrified of spiders, so any that are about are left alone.
I'm fairly certain I had a spider land on me at stupid o'clock and I woke up and basically picked it off my face and slung it across the room.
I generally use a glass and cardboard if it's a plughole spider.

Mamai90 · 20/04/2023 23:06

I'm shit scared of spiders but I'd never kill one or even when someone is removing one for me I always say 'don't kill it!'. I think its awful to take pleasure in killing another creature.

I'll never forget one day when I was in primary school and a huge spider was in the playground, my friend just got her foot and gleefully stomped on it. It always stayed with me as I thought it was cruel. She didn't turn out to be the nicest person either so maybe that tells you a lot about a person!

FrostyFifi · 20/04/2023 23:15

I don't kill anything unnecessarily. Ever.

Clearly if you eat meat, or have a rat or cockroach infestation and you need to get rid of them it can't be helped (but as humanely as possible eg use traps for the rats, don't condemn them or any passing owl to five days of agony).

But if a harmless creature is minding its own business then why would you kill it? It's such a cruelly pointless thing to do.

And no I don't kill wasps, I'll help them outside if they come in.

My brother has a rule in his house "you kill it, you eat it" which does rather discourage small children from mindlessly killing bugs.

FrostyFifi · 20/04/2023 23:16

@elm26 Your grandad sounds like a wonderful man.

TurquoiseDress · 20/04/2023 23:19

YANBU!

Totally not necessary for that performance

I absolutely hate spiders but would get a glass and piece of card/firm paper then pop out the front door (if DH is away/not around)

Not surprised it's put you off him!

elm26 · 20/04/2023 23:25

He really was. Him and my Nan raised me and I consider myself very lucky to have had such a wonderful father figure ♥️ @FrostyFifi

I agree @HeckyPeck, we should all be as lucky as my Grandmother was ☺️

ComputerWifeKaren · 20/04/2023 23:47

A man who'd have stepped right in confidently with a glass and a piece of paper would've been ideal.

Lampan · 20/04/2023 23:56

@TwoMonthsOff I’m afraid they do! And it’s not uncommon. It’s very off-putting. The assumption that all women must be scared of spiders.

AmateurDad · 20/04/2023 23:58

He’s an adult, right? Not a child?

He sounds like a right piece of shit.

My husband won't even drop a caught spider out of a window 'in case it gets cold'. He always releases them into the garage Grin

There's truth in this. A lot of the time, a spider you find in your house will be a species that's adapted to living indoors, and it won't do well exposed to outdoor conditions. (I guess before houses existed they would've lived in caves and things?) Most of the time, they're quietly living their lives in unnoticed parts of your house, disposing of many times their weight in other creepy-crawlies (learning about the biomass pyramid at school finally comes in handy in my everyday life!) and you've only just happened to notice them because they're looking for a girlfriend or something. Sometimes an outdoor spider will end up in your house accidentally, but they don't really want to.

My DP calls all spiders 'Fred'! I had no idea that was a thing. She is scared of them too, but would never hurt them.

Bubblegumtea · 21/04/2023 00:14

Yanbu, awful thing for him to do but a good thing for you to see if that's how he is and even better it's put you off.

I'm in Australia, and I don't spray my house, and most certainly not my garden! How ecologically irresponsible!

I’m not in Australia.

elm26 · 21/04/2023 00:26

Awww amazing! @SarahAndQuack my Grandad would be proud 😂😂😂

JackiePlace · 21/04/2023 00:27

Creep. Don't give him another thought. And ditch the silly female friend who squealed about a spider while you're at it.

Exactly this.
The spider's life is just as important to him, as yours is to you.

I’m just thinking about the mosquito thing…would swatting a mozzie be cruel and hypocritical too (I’ve done it) 😬

I have no compunction about swatting mozzies personally, but then I have had malaria whilst in West Africa, so that probably helps explain my attitude there. (Although I hate the blighters anyway, especially their high-pitched buzzing during the night!)

Is it only legitimate to swatt a mosquito when there is the possibility that it might give you malaria or some other disease, I wonder??)

I have no issue with spiders, I move them outside if my DDs see them, though, as they hate them.

As for wasps, I’m completely phobic and run away from them. (I have been badly stung, in my defence!)

flirtygirl · 21/04/2023 00:53

He sounds brill.

I couldn't be with a man who didn't squash them. They only come back in, if you put them out.

LizzieW1969 · 21/04/2023 00:56

To answer the OP’s question, YANBU. His gleeful enjoyment of killing the spider would be a right turn-off.

Well yes, but Australia is kind of well known for it's noxious wildlife.
