He stepped on a spider

With glee/relish…

Man I like and have been attracted to for a while…(we’re not together)
There was a medium sized spider on the floor, one of the women in our party (not keen on spiders) asked him to remove it/get rid of it. He came over and stamped right on it with his big foot, sort of scraped his foot back, laughed and said ‘It’s the circle of life’ and walked off.

Aibu to have gone off him, pretty much immediately?

So disappointed

My ex would kill spiders. It was one of the things I liked least about her, and there were quite a few things I didn’t like about her.

Mummynew08 · 20/04/2023 22:08

Was this indoors, didn't it make a mess? (Misses the point)

Anyway yanbu, I love spiders and the way they kill flies and mosquitos for us. We also gives ours names but more long-legged names like Curtis and Tallulah and Rex (Fred to me is a short-legged name)

grosslyunfair · 20/04/2023 22:11

I wouldn't give a toss tbh, but I've also spent a lot of time living somewhere with dangerous insects so I'm in the kill them and move on camp!

Sylvaniandysfunctionalfamily · 20/04/2023 22:11

That would be that for me

Emmamoo89 · 20/04/2023 22:18

What an arsehole

GasPanic · 20/04/2023 22:20

I must be the mumsnet equivalent of Hannibal Lectuer because I have killed literally hundreds of those tiny flies with yellow sticky boards this week in the conservatory.

While we are on the subject, I know what happens if you don't cull the spider population in your house, because the last occupant of mine didn't do it. They breed and breed producing an inbred spider horde that no longer stays nicely in the corners of the ceilings trapping flies but rampages over the entire house.

Fortunately I was equal to the challenge and the horde is now largely dead. It took me about 3 years of checking the ceilings once a week and disposing of one every time I found one.

He had a chance to show you how thoughtful, mature, respectful and considerate he was...
and he blew it.

Dump him, the nasty little boy!

Bluegrass · 20/04/2023 22:27

Can we put together a list of insects/arachnids with which are ok to kill (if any) and which are morally reprehensible to kill - together with explanations as to why one life is worth more than another?

leepingup · 20/04/2023 22:30

Ugh the other day I saw a spider in my house and put a glass over it to scoop it up with glass and paper. However I caught two/three of its legs in the side of the glass and they came off so I did kill it then so it wasn't in pain but I felt fucking awful. I would never do that on purpose never mind with glee.

I'm reliably informed rats and mice are OK to kill.

But field mice aren't.

On the insect front, fleas, flies, cockroaches, silverfish, wasps probably OK (not sure whether fleas are insects). Spiders, beetles, bees probably not.

I think ants are definitely fair game.

Personally I think wasps should sack their PR, because there is hardly any difference between them and a bee.

I don’t think it’s ok to kill any of them.

Spiders and flies are easily dealt with, and the more gross ones like slugs generally stay outside where you can ignore them. Even wasps, just open the door and shoo them in that direction.

It’d put me off anyone right away if they needlessly killed a small thing.

UnctuousUnicorns · 20/04/2023 22:38

You know now that he's a definitely a wrong un. Steer clear.

Greenfairydust · 20/04/2023 22:39

I am surprised that so many people actually pick up spiders and go to such length to avoid killing them.

As far as I am concerned any spider that gets inside my home dies.

Same with flies or any other insect.

I have never considered that to be such a big deal.

I will do it quickly and don't take any pleasure in it.

The guy enjoying it is much is definitely wrong, but I am not going to spend that much energy worrying about saving every spider I come across.

What about fleas? What if you had a flea infestation in your house?

Lampan · 20/04/2023 22:40

Ugh I bet he thought he looked like a big macho man doing that.

Like all the idiots who write ‘chief spider remover’ or other such shit on their dating profiles. Since when was squaring up to a spider masculine or impressive? 😄

"However I caught two/three of its legs in the side of the glass and they came off so I did kill it then so it wasn't in pain"

Next time just let it go anyway, the legs grow back. Not trying to make you feel bad; just so you know for another time.

Ponderingwindow · 20/04/2023 22:01

This is the most uk thread of the uk threads on mumsnet.

Most of the spiders we find inside here bite humans, with bites ranging from annoying swelling and itching to deadly. I don’t want them in my garden any more than I want them in my house. It’s why we pay an exterminator to keep both spider free. The rare non-biting variety I will happily leave alone, but they are almost non-existent.

I'm in Australia, and I don't spray my house, and most certainly not my garden! How ecologically irresponsible!

TwoMonthsOff · 20/04/2023 22:44

Total lacking in compassion effing wanker …why are you asking ?

do they say that ? Really like some big game Hunter protecting us frightened little women from …..a harmless spider.

I didn't think you needed to worry that much about spiders in Australia because the snakes keep them mostly under control.

I wouldn't need to worry about them if I lived in Oz, because any house I lived in would be surrounded by a ring of fire and a moat.

Bluegrass · 20/04/2023 22:53

I have swatted many a fly and mosquito in my time and I’d be lying if I said I never took pleasure in killing one of the little fuckers. I also have no compunction about putting down ant poison.

I do mainly trap spiders and chuck them outside, but have also killed the odd harvestman. I don’t see any big moral distinction between them, just personal preference.

yeahscience · 20/04/2023 22:55

Sounds like my dream man tbh, hate the bloody things

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/04/2023 22:56

That would put me off, too. Why would anyone do that?

LaughingCat · 20/04/2023 22:57

Oh god. My other half is terrified of spiders and will still pop a glass over them, slide a card underneath and carry them across the street and halfway down the hill before releasing them (he REALLY doesn’t want them coming back in 😂). He watched me spend twenty minutes trying to rescue an earwig that had got stuck on its back. We’re both kinda dicks, we relish meat, I even give my cats extra snuggles and praise when they come back from a successful hunt for being the fierce, little predators they are but the fact that neither of us will kill something just to make our lives easier, even if we really, really, REALLY don’t like them is one of the reasons we love each other.

I’m with you, I’d have been put right off. The enjoyment is just yuk.

Caramc20 · 20/04/2023 22:58

Yanbu they terrify me but I still put them out. I am always suspicious of people who can kill small animals like mice or insects / spiders. Says to me they are cruel.
