Drag vs cultural misappropriation

marahippo · 13/04/2023 21:44

I'd like to preface by saying I am all for LGBQT+ rights.

However I can't see why we tolerate men pretending to dress as women with over the top make up and clothing. These are not trans men, these are men who dress up with the sole purpose to mock and humiliate for entertainment. They talk about "fannies", grab their artificial boobs, dress like no woman would really dress and make a mockery/objectify women as sexual objects.

Even the names are designed to offending- I give you a few examples:
Cheryl Hole
A'Whora
Ginger Minj

Why is this acceptable?
The days of dressing up and pretending to be a different race/culture for entertainment is now unacceptable. Why is "sexual misappropriation" different?

Oh dear god

missmollygreen · 13/04/2023 21:49

YABU and ridiculous

Lamelie · 13/04/2023 21:52

I don’t like cultural appropriation as a concept. It’s lazy shorthand for:
•exploitation
•fetishing
•disrespect
•othering
so yes, if it is a thing, drag certainly is.

Magentaa · 13/04/2023 22:01

you should watch a few seasons of drag race maybe you will understand why they do drag 💁‍♀️ It’s more than just ‘oh I’ve got tits’ some of their stories are horrifying what they have been through. Anyways they’re eccentric and fabulous and their names are hilarious! Also what’s wrong with just having a laugh my god this world is far too serious now a days. Making things into thing when they’re not a thing

you should watch a few seasons of green/blue/black/purple race maybe you will understand why they do green/blue/black/purple 💁‍♀️ It’s more than just ‘oh I’ve got green/blue/black/purple skin' some of their stories are horrifying what they have been through. Anyways they’re eccentric and fabulous and their names are hilarious! Also what’s wrong with just having a laugh my god this world is far too serious now a days. Would that be equally acceptable? And if not why not?

The drag queen around here who does lots of shows in local pubs is called Shaga Rada. Everything who's seen him thinks he's hilarious.

Gothambutnotahamster · 13/04/2023 22:21

I agree with you Op - I don't know how 'woman face' is so acceptable and actually seems to be celebrated these days. It's awful. We're more than caricatures or have a value based on how we dress!

Magentaa · 13/04/2023 22:24

@marahippo seriously think you should give it ago you might even enjoy it!!
appropriating different cultures/race is a different thing entirely!! They don’t do drag to offend women ffs most of the audience is made up of women.

nothingcomestonothing · 13/04/2023 22:28

Because it only affects women, so it's not important. Blackface and other offensive representations of oppressed groups are offensive to men. Womanface is only insulting to women so it's just a joke/inclusive/shut up bigot. It really is that simple.

fruitbrewhaha · 13/04/2023 22:31

Yeah I’m with you OP. They are just taking the piss out of women.

DojaPhat · 13/04/2023 22:36

Agreed. Imagine if black drag queens existed, your brain would short circuit.

pinksheetss · 13/04/2023 22:40

It's not taking the piss of women at all and clearly those who think that have no idea about the drag society.
It's shit like this that hold us back, complaining about the wrong things. This doesn't affect us negatively AT ALL.
Do people treat you different because of a drag queen? Does it really affect your day to day life?
They take more hassle and name calling for it than any kind of backlash women would get from it

There's an art form and expression through it. Women don't get the monopoly on make up

You'll find drag queens are the biggest supporters of women. Aim your distain elsewhere

Indeed- as you know they do exist and are acceptable.

But they are black men pretending to be women- that is okay apparently.

And white men pretending to be white woken is okay too apparently.

But white men pretending to be black women is not. There are no drag queens doing this.

So ultimately it is okay to pretend to be a different sex, just not a different race.

I'm not voting for any political party who do not explicitly say they'll make womanface a chargeable criminal offence.

Sisisimone · 13/04/2023 22:46

Completely agree with you OP, it's offensive.

Nellieinthebarn · 13/04/2023 22:47

Agree with OP.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 13/04/2023 22:48

You didn’t enable voting, OP.

I think you are right, I loathe it, it is an insult to women ( and very creepy).

pinksheetss · 13/04/2023 22:50

Please, in what way is it an insult to women?

nocoolnamesleft · 13/04/2023 22:50

I also find it offensive.

Take your post, and substitute 'black people' for women, and 'blackface' for drag, and see how it reads.

VestaTilley · 13/04/2023 22:59

YANBU. I hate it. It’s woman face. A nasty, misogynistic, sexualised caricature.

Cuckoosheep · 13/04/2023 23:01

I loathe it. It shouldn't be acceptable in society.

IAmMeThisIsI · 13/04/2023 23:06

Hmm. I'm not sure. I certainly don't want men dressing up as a women and going into women's spaces, sports and impacting women's rights. And I definitely don't want drag at schools. However, idk about the appropriation side of it. I think that they're just trying to be funny and everyone is well aware they're really a man in make up and a wig. They're not trying to lie about it. And yeah, they take the piss with the names and joke content. But don't a lot of comedians? Drag is a joke isn't it? Meant to be funny? I could be swayed about this and agree with you OP. But I'm struggling with getting offended for the sake of it. It doesn't impact my life at all if a man gets on stage and performs in drag. What does offend me is being called a chest feeder, womb haver. And being called hysterical for not wanting men in the changing room or toilets. That's what I get really pissed off with.

Magentaa · 13/04/2023 23:10

Love it or hate it, it’s not for everyone I get that But it no way shape or form is it equivalent to black face!! Personally I love drag. They celebrate woman they support women. Their audience is full of women looking to have a good laugh. Yes they can be cure but I love their humour as do many other women. Doesn’t mean they should be cancelled!!
