To Want To Slap The Loudmouth That Spoilt Our Special Day Out?

Ifrozethehoumous · 11/04/2023 18:12

DH and I planned a very special and expensive train trip to mark of silver wedding anniversary. We had been looking forward to it for ages and felt really excited when we started our journey. Everything was lovely and as expected, the food was superb and the staff on the train were attentive and professional. Unfortunately, for much of the day there was a small group of people with one particular woman who was raucous and loud with a laugh that would have rivalled Sybil Fawlty. She had obviously had too much to drink and didn’t give a damn about anyone else around her. While we had a really lovely day, it was hard to ignore this woman’s appalling behaviour. I’m amazed nothing was said to her. I would have complained to her myself but unfortunately during the journey I discovered she is from the same village as us and I didn’t want any future repercussions. AIBU to have wanted to slap her? How can anyone behave so badly?

OP posts:

I hate obnoxiously loud people. I would have probably rolled my eyes with dh and tried to ignore because confrontation would have tainted my day more.

HappyValet · 11/04/2023 22:17

*I'm tagging it on here, but it applies to about a dozen or so posts... in the absence of the OP actually adding anything to her one single post, people have gone for the full cartoon villain/just making up a whole fictional narrative.

This woman could have been a window-smashing, abuse-shrieking drinken nightmare, or she could have been a really nice woman having a rare old time after a terrible event. She could have been deaf and unaware of her volume. None of us know. There are a hundred different possible truths.

Reading MN threads, the nuance of life is frequently a dot in the distance.*

But what I've said (that people should be considerate of others) applies to any situation no matter how 'nuanced'.

And honestly it was more in response to the PPs who are all 'oh she's just having a laugh' rather than the OP. I'd bet my bottom dollar they are a pain in the arse to share a public space with.

For every "boring old fart" who actually has the balls to tell people like you to put a sock in it, there are about 20 other people thinking it and wishing they had the balls to say it.

God you sound awful.
Tell a joke.

@girlfriend44 All jokes aside, a volume control switch would be amazing. People being loud and obnoxious in quiet settings make me quite anxious. I probably wouldnt confront them but i really wish they would have some self awareness and realise the whole world doesnt need to hear that they are enjoying themselves.

What's wrong with enjoying themselves? Don't you ever?

InSpainTheRain · 11/04/2023 22:29

My sympathies OP. Try to put her out your mind and remember the more pleasant parts of the say. Congratulations on your 25th!

girlfriend44 · 11/04/2023 21:47

How loud is too loud?
Perhaps people should wear a volume control switch so you can turn it to just the right setting for you.

You have no idea how many people wish there was a volume control switch - or better still, a mute button - that worked on people like you!

What's wrong is one person's enjoyment coming at the expense of others. A person blaring music out into the carriage is probably enjoying it or they wouldn't be doing it, but it's a nuisance and a disturbance for others. It's a complete lack of recognition and awareness that it's a shared public space. The same goes for people who are screaming and shouting on public transport, like the football singing crowds.

People can enjoy themselves on public transport if they enjoy themselves quietly in an appropriate manner without disturbance to others.

Don't you get it? People like you and your partner stop other people from enjoying themselves.

ForgottenNurseryRhymes · 11/04/2023 22:31

I'm pretty sure I'm loud.
My partner is particularly deaf even with hearing aids.
It's hard to remember what an accepted before becoming obnoxious volume is.

Being loud is one thing, but you sound like a really spiteful nasty person, are you the same to people's faces or just brave behind a screen?

I don't know why they have alcohol available in all these places. Nobody needs it and there's always potential for antisocial raucousness.

Really?

Nee Naw
did someone call the fun police?!

😂😂😂🚨🚨🚨
Funny but also true.

Ahh, all bark and no bite then.

Bansheed · 11/04/2023 22:43

I think there is a heavy weight in the "How very dare she". Tbh, I think I like the sound of the laughing woman more than the OP

Why is it spiteful or nasty to wish there was a way of making loud, obnoxious, selfish idiots shut up?

Incessant laughing is not the same as playing loud music!.... How is it remotely similar?
What a fun sponge!! 🪣🧽🧻

Both these things are loud and annoying.

Having to listen to selfish idiots isn't most people's idea of fun.

dimples76 · 11/04/2023 22:55

Unless it's in a cinema/theatre type environment or somewhere where it would be disrespectful to be loudly having fun (I am thinking of a group I encountered at a war memorial museum) I enjoy the sight and sounds of other people having fun. I don't really get why it would ruin anyone's outing. I don't have a loud voice but I do have quite a loud laugh. I would be a bit miffed to be told to quieten it down if I was just enjoying being with friends in a space that was intended for people to have fun.

palelavender · 11/04/2023 23:04

I was once in a restsurant for dinner. There were three men discussing business at a nearby table. One had a bit too much to drink and he got very loud we all got to hear far too much about the business of inground swimming pools. I was within a microsecond of going over and telling him that the entire restaurant did not need to hear it when one of his dining companions came over to our table. He quietly apologised on his companion's behalf and insisted on buying us a drink or dessert. I can't imagine either man would have been too keen to do future business with the loud sweating drunk idiot who couldn't be taken out in public.

SquareRootOfAllEvil · 11/04/2023 23:05

There’s a difference between having fun, though, and being so loud that it stops anyone not in your group from enjoying themselves.

I’ve been on those kinds of trains before for special occasions and most of the time it’s lovely with people chatting, laughing, enjoying good food and drink -all great.

I’ve also been unfortunate enough to be in restaurants next to people who are being so loud I’m not even able to hold a conversation with the people I’m with. It’s extremely annoying - but at least in a restaurant you can move or leave. I wouldn’t be impressed with being stuck with that kind of group on a train.

Namechange666 · 11/04/2023 23:43

There is nothing worse than some loud mouthed cackling drunken person when you are sober so I sympathise.

Me and my sister treated my mum to an afternoon tea River boat trip.

A load of hens had also booked the same one and they were sat right next to us.

They were already pissed before they got on and started to neck the prosecco with the afternoon tea. One of them had the biggest gob and was effin and jeffin it.

I don't think I would have been as annoyed, if the toilet on the river boat wasn't on the outside. And because they'd all been drinking, they were up and down to loo the whole time kept leaving the damn door open and it was freezing and raining sob
Guess who was sat in line with the door
Sob yes me. So you can see why I wasn't their biggest fan anyway but I totally agree with you.

People who can't handle their drink ruin it for others and think they are hilarious when they are loud.

Bansheed · 12/04/2023 05:27

I am still on the fence. Namely, as I haven't read a single post from a PP who was disturbed by a "braying", "loud" "sweating", "gobby"drunk", who doesn't sound sanctimonious and unpleasant. There are also misogynistic overtones, that make me uncomfortable.

mnisannoyingAF · 12/04/2023 06:40

I want to slap the capitals in your title

bluebeck · 12/04/2023 08:08

There’s no mention of the woman being drunk or if her drinking alcohol at all.

Of course it’s public transport, the price tag is irrelevant. Many flights cost that and more. It’s still public transport.

Hell is other people, but you either accept that or stay home.
