To Want To Slap The Loudmouth That Spoilt Our Special Day Out?

DH and I planned a very special and expensive train trip to mark of silver wedding anniversary. We had been looking forward to it for ages and felt really excited when we started our journey. Everything was lovely and as expected, the food was superb and the staff on the train were attentive and professional. Unfortunately, for much of the day there was a small group of people with one particular woman who was raucous and loud with a laugh that would have rivalled Sybil Fawlty. She had obviously had too much to drink and didn’t give a damn about anyone else around her. While we had a really lovely day, it was hard to ignore this woman’s appalling behaviour. I’m amazed nothing was said to her. I would have complained to her myself but unfortunately during the journey I discovered she is from the same village as us and I didn’t want any future repercussions. AIBU to have wanted to slap her? How can anyone behave so badly?

I don't think having a loud laugh is a dreadful social crime?

I used to work in an office with a horrible woman, she was absolutely appalling and downright mean and bullying. She had a loud laugh, that is to say she cackled like a witch, usually at some else’s expense.

You wouldn’t like to be in her company, and she often retold stories when she had been eye blindingly rude to unassuming members of the public for no valid reason too.

I think I would quite enjoy a rail trip with Sybil Fawlty!

She'd be in a foul temper nowadays because she wouldn't be able to chain smoke!

Weirdwonders · 11/04/2023 18:56

Why is it that as soon as someone suggests that it’s not actually fun to be in the presence of someone day-ruiningly loud and annoying in a confined space, people will pile in to tell you that you’re the one being unreasonable? We all know she wouldn’t have responded well to a request to be a bit quieter and no one would have backed you up anyway because no one wants to deal with the aggro so we all have to partake in the pretence that these people are FUN! Sorry you weren’t able to enjoy your trip OP.

LakeTiticaca · 11/04/2023 18:59

Nothing worse than having to listen to someone elses overloud conversation and shrieking laughter when you are trying to have a nice time.
Reminds me of years ago I went to an event which my DC was involved in. We were sat in a small stand right behind some knobhead talking really loudly, giving a commentary on what he thought the participants were doing wrong, name dropping famous people he claimed to be mates with, and then when a small child started crying nearby he loudly proclaimed it should be spiked on the end of a spear to shut it up.
I wanted to tap him on the shoulder and tell him shut his horrible gob but DP wouldn't tell me 🤬

Was it like a special.train experience that you pay a,lot of money for or just a normal.train trip,if it was the former I can see why you would be annoyec, but if it was the latter ,it's just a train ,high I g much you can do.about it though.

From the OP's description I'm guessing it was a Pullman experience, where the cost is in the hundreds if you book the package with meals included, and not cheap even for the most basic ticket. I know because I somehow ended up on a mailing list for one of the companies that does them and am regularly tormented by brilliant-sounding trips that are far out of my budget!

ReliantRobyn · 11/04/2023 19:02

The northern line can be annoying I agree.

Georgyporky · 11/04/2023 19:04

So, laughing loudly is appalling behaviour !!!

"I’m amazed nothing was said to her. ". Perhaps no-one else was bothered by someone enjoying themself.

2bazookas · 11/04/2023 19:05

why didn't you tell the staff? They would have dealt with it for you.

Just asking the staff to have a discreet word with her group; to calm down would probably have sufficed but wanting to slap her puts you in the category of be a thug; which is worse than a raucous loudmouth who’s a bit tipsy as I’m guessing you middle aged if you’ve been married 25 years😁

Cloverforever · 11/04/2023 19:09

You are obviously not British.
We don’t consider it has been a good day out if we are able to recall anything that has taken place.
😁😁

How is the OP's age relevant? She's mentioned her Silver Wedding to highlight the special nature of the trip and the reason for splashing out on it.

WetBandits · 11/04/2023 19:13

You might’ve had a much nicer time without that uncomfortable stick up your arse. 🙂

unclebuck · 11/04/2023 19:13

Oh no! Was she one of those loud coarse common middle aged women we all dread? How awful for you. They should really check for laughing and loud voices before allowing access to refined places. I hope she wasn't a Northerner too - with a name like Pauline, Karen, Joanne or Julie. They are the very very worst! Tut!

Mumof3granof2 · 11/04/2023 19:13

The OP hasn't specified the age of the loud woman.

AncientQuercus · 11/04/2023 19:16

I've noticed since Covid that there is more and more of this in public; people having really loud conversations with much laughing (which often sounds put on) and no consideration for other people around them. Nobody seems to speak at a normal volume anymore, they always have to shout, and it's always in places where you can't easily get away from them like restaurants or your office.

It can be!

Lordofthebutterfloofs · 11/04/2023 19:23

YABU to want to slap anyone.

It was not your super special personal train. You paid to share the space with others.

You should have hired a whole carriage if you wanted to be alone.

RosaMoline · 11/04/2023 19:25

Could you not have discreetly asked a staff member to move you to another carriage? Also, the fact she’s from the same village as you is neither here nor there.
I suspect this is all made up anyway.
