Has anyone seen the new video of the Dalai Llama asking a child to suck his tongue. Yes. It sounds bizarre. But it is in the news right now. The video is out there. And the dalai llama is apologising on social media now

Im devastated! I went to see the Dalai Llama in India. He gave a speech on accepting and loving everyone, and that it didn't matter what religion we are. I always told people that it was one of the highlights of my life.

I went through life thinking he was a good person, that he was one of the good ones. To see this today, makes me think oh no is he yet another abuser.

Some people have remarked about this video that sticking your tongue out at someone is a greeting in Tibet.

However - the Dalai Llama kisses the child on the lips in the video, and asks the child to suck his tongue. It does not look right at all.

He has apologised on twitter now.

I have encountered perverts as part of my job. There is a particular vibe which they all give off and he definitely gives off that vibe I'm afraid. I accept that there are all sorts of reasons for why men become perverts but the end result is equally damaging for the victim regardless. Yes, he may be a perv because of x,y,z but make no mistake, still a perv. End of.

I had beautiful memories of meeting HhDL amd attending teachings in India and UK - was very special person with great insights however this shows some perception/ understanding / has completely changed or maybe was always present but hidden ..other stories circulating about tibetan Buddhism and monastic behaviours being hidden away

I believe there has been a great deal of discussion around the Catholic church reformint the seminaries since their abuse scandal. There is significant compelling evidence to show the young priests psychosexual development is stunted in that environment and changes their perception of normal behaviour. Perhaps Buddhism needs to do likewise with its monestaries.

I agree with other posters saying this is almost certainly a sign of dementia. I mean just stop and SERIOUSLY THINK ABOUT IT for a second - this is a really strange and perculiar thing for an adult man to do in public- it would be quite a weird request in private for that matter even between consenting adults. It is very odd. How likely do you think it would be for someone who is a religious leader who is in his right mind but just happens to be a concealed paedophile to make that request publicly? No one rational would.

Either it's his first obvious presentation or (because of the difficulties around the implications of reincarnation which is a central belief of buddhism - so it's not just like retiring a Pope because he is the Dalai Llame until he dies and is reincarnated in new born baby) those around him who are either aware or have suspected, have worked to conceal it. Personally I think the latter is far more likely as I genuinely doubt something that extreme would be a first hint but it is possible.

I don't know why so many people on here are dismissing this in such aggressive terms. Like I said, just stop and think about it. He is 87. Many people on here will tell you they have relatives who did not show symptoms until they were late 80s. Caring for someone who has dementia is heartbreaking and horrific because they aren't who they were. The people aggressively attacking this suggestion should go and read some of the threads on this site or on the Alzheimer's society - daughters of good kind decent men who as their dementia advances start to believe their daughters are women they are having affairs with, grandfathers who mistake teenage grand daughters for their dead wives.

It is truely, truely traumatic to witness this happen in a person that you care for and love as you see them disappear before you. You can tell that the people who are dismissing dementia as a very likely possibility here have never seen it close up happen to someone they love.

The people surrounding him have a hell of a lot to answer for, for putting out that statement. They've made a huge mistake but maybe they just don't want to face up to or reveal publicly his medical situation because of the consequences for the religion and thought they'd have a go at fronting it out.

This is exactly what I mean. Alzheimers and all progress dementia is a form of constantly growing brain damage. To the people saying 'oh well maybe the people who had sexual aggression latently in them and it emerges', that's not what is going on when dementia advances. It's not like getting a bit drunk and your true personality coming out. It is fundamental brain damage and brain changes.

Unfortunately, I've seen too much of this very sadly. A charming kind church going woman who lived a life of politeness and public service became an aggressive and violent harpy who swore in the most filthy terms. Part of what makes this so upsetting if it's someone you know is that you know there 'well self' would be disgusted and repelled by what they have become. Can you imagine how distressing it is to have had a close and loving relationship with a father who was decent, kind and happily married for 60 years to suddenly starts trying to grope an adult daughter because he thinks it is his new mistress or his dead wife?

When you see this happen at close quarters, it makes you realise that a lot of what we judge as morality is just brain chemistry and how the brain works.

It is agonising and tragic and really I hope no one on this thread who has not experienced this as a carer or a relative ever has to because it will destroy you.

A little bit of open mindedness and empathy and actually acknowleging a possiblity here wouldn't go a miss.

Personally, I'd stake everything I own on a bet that he has dementia and either this will emerge in due course or he will totally disappear until he dies as a massive effort is undertaken to conceal his health for his privacy reasons and fears about damage to the religion due to the impact on a lack of real leader/reincarnation philosphy.

Not thin air at all. Based on facts and experience

• a man who is 87
• who (if he were well) would know asking a child to do that when he was in the presences of witnesses would be illegal, likely to lead to police involvement and cause a huge back lash
• you could add who previously has apparently lead a blameless life devoted to religion (but I accept this carries less weight than other factors because of the 'behind closed doors argument)
• has a sudden change in behaviour that is shocking
• that takes place in public when he knows he is being filmed - so that this would be unable to be hidden as it would be circulated via media.

You put it all together and dementia is really far more likely than any other explanation. I add to that my own experience of seeing changes happen to good people in real life.

My view is that is 100% what's going on here but that's just my opinion. I'm not "diagnosing" anyone. I can't know for sure. It's just my view.

My reason for posting was to challenge those who were attacking those putting dementia forward as a theory as completely impossible. These people should at least open their mind to the possibility and obviously haven't experienced it in real life where there are nasty behaviour changes due to advancing brain damage.

China would appear to be quite busy atm stirring things up in Taiwan, Ukraine etc without involving themselves directly in trying to remove the DL from Indian territory
