Dalai llama ask a child to suck his tongue

Has anyone seen the new video of the Dalai Llama asking a child to suck his tongue. Yes. It sounds bizarre. But it is in the news right now. The video is out there. And the dalai llama is apologising on social media now

Im devastated! I went to see the Dalai Llama in India. He gave a speech on accepting and loving everyone, and that it didn't matter what religion we are. I always told people that it was one of the highlights of my life.

I went through life thinking he was a good person, that he was one of the good ones. To see this today, makes me think oh no is he yet another abuser.

Some people have remarked about this video that sticking your tongue out at someone is a greeting in Tibet.

However - the Dalai Llama kisses the child on the lips in the video, and asks the child to suck his tongue. It does not look right at all.

He has apologised on twitter now.

What do you all think?

To me tongue sucking is revolting rather than sexual. Akin to 'pull my finger'.

That’s kind of what I thought. I can imagine my grandma doing something a bit weird like that and not really knowing how to talk to a child:

pickledandpuzzled · 11/04/2023 15:46

I'd say 'we' in that context covers all the different people, with all their different opinions, that talked about safeguarding.
I mean, how else would you describe a conversation had between multiple people? Comments that have already been made?

Mollymalone123 · 11/04/2023 15:48

@LegendOfZeldaFitzgerald and @l3ThirtySeven I agree with you that dementia seems more plausible.

pickledandpuzzled · 11/04/2023 15:50

@Newnamenewname109870 my grandad was gross. He used to blow wet raspberries at us, waggle his false teeth at us, and generally be really grim. He thought it was hilarious. I hated it and cringed away.
He wasn't abusive, just completely insensitive. I'm so careful now to take my cue from the child, not what I think is great. It's a modern sensibility though, my mother still thinks children are totally overindulged and need to toughen up and kowtow to the adults. Confused

TokyoStories · 11/04/2023 15:52

waggle his false teeth at us

Haha! My grandad did this as well. He had a very silly sense of humour. It was gross but he was a lovely man.

We covered all the safeguarding, retire the Dalai Lama and such upthread. We focussed on it first. We? Are you part of a group of posters or something? The royal we? Or is this some sort of attempt at persuasive speech 😂?

He should retire from public life is my opinion. Been saying that since my first post. That's not enough. He must never have access to children without due care again. Otherwise there is a risk that he'll be asking for kisses and tongue sucking in private whether due to hypothetical dementia or nefarious reasons. There also needs to be an investigation of the incident with the boy.

Well I can kind of see his point. The less attractive a woman is, the less people seem to pay any attention to her. That's strange and not my experience. In my professional as well as private life it is more often the not so conventionally attractive women who are the stronger leaders who get plenty of attention. Your comment is sexist and ignorant.

I suppose the Dalai Lama is a global brand and all sorts of devoted PR exercises are being conducted to manage this man's reputation.

I hope they will also keep him away from children in the future unless they are 100% sure this disgusting behaviour was a one off. But there needs to be a through investigation to establish that first. In any case not brilliant for the Dalai Lama's karma and not brilliant for his brand.

@AllIsBest
We means all the posters that have been here from the start of the thread.

The Dalai Lama lives in a large temple complex at Mcleodganj in the state of Himachal Pradesh. It is all adult male monks. He does not see visitors already due to his advanced age. So retiring from public life would be good enough as he’s only near children during public events as it is. It’s your ignorance as to how the Dalai Lama lives that is on display here.

AllIsBest · 11/04/2023 16:36

So much mansplaining on this thread none of which sound particularly enlightened. Plus ça change 😂.

GatoradeMeBitch · 11/04/2023 16:36

I wonder if his advisors understand how badly his brand has just been damaged. "Tee hee the silly Dalai Lama is so jokes" doesn't work when he's been caught on camera gripping a small child and telling them to suck on his tongue. But he has been on camera frequently for decades and nothing like this has happened before...

So either he's developing dementia which is entirely possible at his age, or he is so used to having his "tendencies" indulged and normalized by the people who fawn over him that's he's lost all sense of needing to hide it in public.

Men of extreme power tend to get access to whatever they want.

Yes it is possible that someone high profile has been a closet pedophile and gotten away with it for years. But when you objectively assess the probability using statistics of prevalence, this is not likely. It is estimated that 0.5% to 1% of men are pedophiles. Asian men are less likely than the average to be pedophiles. So let’s just say it’s the lower end of the range and call it a 0.5% chance that the Dalai Lama is a pedophile.

Now let’s add to that the probability that it’s been hidden for 75yrs. The average age a child sex abuse offender is caught is at 25yrs old. This makes it even less likely he’s been a secret pedophile.

But we can ignore that if you like, just to be a bit biased towards your opinion that the Dalai Lama is a pedophile.

Now let’s look at the probability the Dalai Lama has dementia. So 1 in 6 men his age have dementia. That’s a 17% chance he has dementia.

This means he is 34 times more likely to have dementia than to be a pedophile.

But hey, let’s keep on being biased towards the he’s a pedophile opinion and reduce this probability by the % of people with dementia who do not exhibit Inappropriate Sexual Behaviour or ISB which is 75%. So that gives us a 4.2% probability that not only does the Dalai Lama have dementia, but he also will exhibit ISB.

This means he is 8.3 times more likely to have dementia with ISB than to be a pedophile.

This thought process is more objective than your thought process by far.

You're not a born statistician are you? 😂

Indeed

The average devotee comes with an off-the-scale level of self-absorption. That's why there is no genuine empathy for the child coming through in their posts whatsoever. It feels a bit like scientology in a sense.

Which is bizarre given what the central tenets of Buddhism are! It should, really, create a utopian society if followed correctly.

malapast · 11/04/2023 17:19

Sometimes Buddhism seems like a nihilistic hippy death cult. A famous Thai monk Ajarn Chah who had planted many temples in the west said;

I think if you really want to cry. Then it would be better to do so when someone is born. Cry at the root, for if there were no birth, there would be no death.

Given our leaders all claim to be higher ups in Buddhism and yet they have created a shitshow, I think the Utopia is some years away.

Sudeko · 11/04/2023 17:22

I think that a lot of the memes and gifs are directly inspired by that kind of word salad. I don't wish to sound cynical but these cults are all selling pups from the same litter.

Gigantasaurus · 11/04/2023 17:23

To me Buddhism resonates a lot with me, when applied with sound reasoning. Its principles have pulled me through some serious mental health difficulties however I don't go to any groups or get my learning from memes or the internet - I go old fashioned and read books. Mainly for the reasons already expressed in this thread.

Gigantasaurus · 11/04/2023 17:26

My dear friend, I may be the victim of wrong perceptions, and what I write here may not reflect the truth. However, this is my experience of the situation. This is what I really feel in my heart. If there is anything wrong in what I write, let us sit down and look into it together

Thich Nhat Hanh,

This is something a lot of people could learn from

He needs to be cautioned by the police so it’s officially on the record.

An ordinary man would be charged with inappropriate sexual behaviour to a minor.

His status should not let him off.

bamboowarrior · 11/04/2023 17:35

I listened to a podcast recently and felt HHDL behaved inappropriately with a young woman- can't quite remember context but the idea of possible dementia came up for me ...

His aides need to step up and speak truth to power.
