To not understand how people live like this?

I went round to someones house today and they were sat there in the living room, no window open, all dark and smoking and drinking. It was disgusting. Made my excuses and left. Cant understand how people can live like that? No kids in the house but even so. Some people are so unhealthy?

I've 2 boys who have autism and many days they have all the curtains closed in the home, otherwise they have a massive meltdown.
I would love too have all my curtains and windows open daily but it's not doable.
What are you insinuating?
A social services call,police etc?
Fair enough if it's just 2 adults in property doing there thing,
I suggest you mind your on business

Totally up to you @matis if you want to keep your curtains shut. I just wouldn’t want to sit in darkness all day and I don’t think depriving yourself from natural daylight is at all healthy.

Don't you have any understanding of autism? I mean. Did it make you feel good to post like that? Knowing that I'm autistic?

Exactly what @Flamesbegin said. THAT is the general consensus on CCC.

My gran used to make me laugh as if the curtains weren't drawn back by say 9am she'd stress that people would think "someone had died"!?! I never understood this but guessing it's from days of old and perhsps something people in mourning did?? Either way it's a sign that something isn't right if people's curtains are constantly closed.

I keep my front blinds closed because it's annoying having to rearrange the angle throughout the day so you aren't being blinded by the sun.

My house is open plan so the curtains/windows at the back of the house are always open. The rooms are actually bright and airy behind those closed front blinds!

Like I said earlier, some people's lives are so limited...

@SpudleyLass but if you keep your curtains open you'll be able to see if dd is happily playing in the garden or done a runner.

No, the main garden is accessed through the back door and the tall garden gate - I don't keep those curtains shut by the back door, because as you quite rightly say, I'm able to keep an eye on her from there. The garden fence is very high, so I have little fear of her running off whilst distracted - unless I haven't bolted the gate.

The front door has a little garden by it but no fencing whatsoever, quite exposed really. Anybody off the street can walk right onto it - which also means were I to be distracted by fumbling with housekeys or shopping and DH isn't with us, she could easily run off and would definitely do so.

The only curtains I keep shut are the ones in the two bedrooms, which immediately face the street.

The bungalow has a bit of a weird set up, so my comments maybe make more sense in my head than to your eyes, ifyswim.

PILs didn’t open windows. They did open curtains except in the winter when sometimes they wouldn’t be open for days, MIL was paranoid someone might see in if she had the lights on. They also smoked. I can’t tell you how unwell I got staying there.
It was their normal though, they thought I was a freak for having all the windows open all the time.

Onemyownhere · 08/04/2023 21:00

I keep my blinds shut in the winter as it keeps the draft out and stops people looking inside my house when I am just minding my own business, however when it gets warm i do the opposite so and also open the gate windows.

user146539089 · 08/04/2023 21:10

I don’t know you @matis so how would I know you are autistic? If that’s the case then I can understand you may have some issues but not all people with autism can’t tolerate sunlight and all humans need sunlight for their health.

shrunkenhead · 08/04/2023 22:44

Wear sunglasses.

matis · 08/04/2023 22:44

I literally explained I was autistic on the thread.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 08/04/2023 22:56

Live and let live, I say
I don't judge anyone, and can't say I notice if curtains are closed
Why do you care?

user146539089 · 08/04/2023 22:58

You may have done @matis but I only responded to you because you tagged me and you surely can’t expect people to read everything you’ve ever written.

Do you think we don't have lights in our houses?

user146539089 · 08/04/2023 23:16

Of course I don’t think you don’t have lights @VanGoghsDog but people need natural light to be healthy. I thought everyone knew this?

That wasn't what you said though. You said "wouldn't want to sit in darkness".
I don't sit in darkness, I turn the lights on.

Also, I'm not convinced of the health benefits of light through windows. I keep my curtains shut most of the time for various reasons. But I do leave the house. I did a ten mile walk today. Though I was wearing a rimmed hat and factor fifty so as not to be damaged by the "healthy" sun. Don't worry, I took my vitamin D today, as every day.

BadNomad · 08/04/2023 23:19

People do go outside. Sitting in their living room isn't the only opportunity to get natural light.

Exactly!

AAAAABBBBBCCCCC · 08/04/2023 23:22

But are they happy. Because that's what fucking counts?

user146539089 · 08/04/2023 23:27

@VanGoghsDog compared to sitting in a room with curtains opened a room with artificial light would be in relative darkness. You would need a lot of lights to come anywhere near the same level of light and even then you wouldn’t get the same benefits. You also don’t get the same level of air circulating. As I’ve said I don’t really understand why you wouldn’t want natural daylight in your house and fresh air in your rooms but if that’s what you want to do then that’s your choice.

At the very least it's good manners to read the thread surely?

user146539089 · 08/04/2023 23:34

No. I don’t think it’s bad manners not to read the whole thread @matis Surely everyone just dips in and out sometimes?

XenoBitch · 08/04/2023 23:37

I someone who lives in darkness, but she has photophobia.

This is abject nonsense. It depends on so many factors that you simply cannot make these statements as if they are facts. You're just making stuff up.

I have daylight lights at home, though I don't always use them, I tend to use the table lamps. But no, the room is not in relative darkness. It's pretty much the same.

Curtains don't stop air, they don't hermetically seal the room. They prevent draughts. But in my house I have both my bedroom and bathroom windows open all year round, so I have plenty of fresh AIR.

I just don't like sunlight coming in.

If it's my (or anyone's) choice, why do you keep blethering on about it anyway?

Maple2023 · 09/04/2023 01:31

This is my kitchen area with the blinds closed, I'm definitely not sat in the dark!
I do open the other blinds and windows open every day but when my kitchen window is within touching distance of the pavement... I'm keeping that one shut
