To not understand how people live like this?

I went round to someones house today and they were sat there in the living room, no window open, all dark and smoking and drinking. It was disgusting. Made my excuses and left. Cant understand how people can live like that? No kids in the house but even so. Some people are so unhealthy?

I judge those who keep curtains shut!

😁😁😁

I had a neighbour like you, she never realised they were kept shut because of her.

KnitGoodWomanKnit · 08/04/2023 17:04

Exactly!

KnitGoodWomanKnit · 08/04/2023 17:05

That was to pictoosh but fits with forthesakeofpenguin's post too. 😆

QueenBee1234 · 08/04/2023 17:05

@mydogisthebest good for you.
I happen to dislike nets and like my curtains.
I can assure you (not that it matters) that my house is far from dark and dingy.
Also, your dog is not the best because mine is!😂

Moro93 · 08/04/2023 17:12

My blind is shut all the time because

A) It’s broken and I need to replace it
B) My son has sensory issues and doesn’t want to wear sunglasses indoors when it’s bright sunshine outside.

Judge away…

Snazzysausage · 08/04/2023 17:13

Are they hoarders? The bloke next to us is,he closed all the curtains and blinds on the day he moved in nearly 9 years ago and hasn't opened them since - he doesn't open any windows. He's not put a single bit of rubbish out in that time either. He told us when he moved in he drinks and smokes weed so god knows what he's constantly breathing in with not having any fresh air through. It's his lifestyle ,though one I suspect will catch up with him, health-wise, eventually.

dayswithaY · 08/04/2023 17:14

Not enough info, we don’t know anything about these people or OP’s relationship to them.

But you say there’s no children in the house. Therefore, a group of adults choose to spend a Bank holiday weekend having a drink and a smoke without opening the curtains.

Its not how I choose to spend my time but, what is the problem here exactly?

Just sounds like a pub before the smoking ban came into force.

Okay, your opinion doesn't really matter, dear- so think whatever you want.😉

Endlesssummer2022 · 08/04/2023 17:29

That does sound grim OP. I’ve also noticed a few of my neighbours never open their windows. I think it’s healthy to air your home out.

user146539089 · 08/04/2023 17:32

I know a couple of people like this. I find it hard to breath in their homes because the air is so stale. I can’t understand why they don’t open a window and let in the fresh air. It’s the first thing I do every morning whatever the weather. Both of these friends have cancer too. It’s totally up to them to live how they do (big drinkers, one is a smoker and regular drug taker). It’s just not for me.

Why would you notice this?

I really couldn't tell you anything about my neighbors windows or curtains!

Georgyporky · 08/04/2023 17:34

Were you invited ?

Why are you bothered ?

shrunkenhead · 08/04/2023 17:35

@Snazzysausage probably.

MotherOfUnicorns4 · 08/04/2023 17:36

I love having the curtains open, but DP has autism and the sunlight hurts his eyes so the curtains are shut atm for him. The dodgy drug dealer house further up the street always has its curtains and windows open!

In what way, exactly? What's your issue with this?

our curtains are almost always shut because we have 2 light sensitive household members. A light controlled home means a life without horrible headaches.

we have some rooms on motorized shades so we can easily open up the rooms at dusk and at night and close them up again in the morning.

I open my windows in the morning. I don't open the curtains but they flap in the breeze

matis · 08/04/2023 17:40

To those who judge me for having my curtains shut.

What are you thinking? What are you judging?

Sailingaround · 08/04/2023 17:40

I open windows almost daily but keep curtains mostly drawn. My apartment has floor to ceiling windows and the curtains are light coloured so it’s actually not that dark anyway.

I do it partly because I live opposite a parade of shops and businesses with some flats on top of them and the few times I poke my head out the window to look at the weather or sky I see some nosey parker is staring in. And sometimes I like to wander about my flat in my sports bra before a home workout and I’m not someone who wears those in public.

I judge people who judge people who don’t open their curtains 🤣 I honestly don’t even notice plus it’s just none of your business.

Skyrim40 · 08/04/2023 17:41

Maybe get them an air purifier for Christmas and a Mrs hinch cleaning kit

shrunkenhead · 08/04/2023 17:41

Anyone with constantly closed curtains (or CCC as it's commonly known) is clearly hiding something, up to no good, hoarding, house is a state, or full of expensive antiques.
We are none of the above. I don't even care if someone wants to geek in my window! They'd be sorely disappointed.
Nets are grim and people haven't cottoned on to the fact that blinds need cleaning therefore usually equally grim but, hey, a bit more modern and less naff than nets.

Skyrim40 · 08/04/2023 17:42

I’ve lived in my current home for 5 years, with the same set of neighbours. The one closest to me never ever has her windows or curtains open, no matter what time of year. I find it bizarre - my windows and doors are flung open as soon as temperatures allow and even in winter to air the house out. Our gardens are south facing so I’m not sure how they manage when temps rise, especially as they’ve converted the loft 🥵

It’s actually better to keep blinds and curtains closed through the day in hot weather then open windows at night when the sun has gone down to let cooler air in.

Sailingaround · 08/04/2023 17:49

Based on personal experience the below is false :

Anyone with constantly closed curtains (or CCC as it's commonly known) is clearly hiding something, up to no good, hoarding, house is a state, or full of expensive antiques.

What an interesting assumption. I have friends who are a couple, one opens the curtains the other shuts them. Is only one of them up to no good or hiding something?

I have had impromptu visits to friends or neighbours houses who keep their curtains shut and there was nothing untoward going on nor were they hoarders or had expensive antiques . Conversely I have a friend who is a hoarder, has dishes piled up for days, rarely cleans her floors but keeps her curtain open. She is the only friend I have who lives like this as well.

I just don’t like people staring in, especially when I’m the type of person to forget to close the curtains when coming out the shower and have decided it’s best all round to not give people an eyeful. For those who don’t mind pepppe being nosy - crack on but it seems odd to judge others for not opening their curtains.
