Booked to go to Cornwall next week and it’s looking like rain all week, AIBU to feel down about it?

Got the week off next week, booked a caravan in Cornwall and looking at the forecast it’s looking pretty rubbish. I can’t help feel annoyed about it! I know I should be grateful to just have a week off work but how do I get into happy holiday mode?! Any any tips of how to make the best of a rainy caravan break?!

Well it is April tbf!

LlynTegid · 07/04/2023 08:34

Visit the Eden Project?

Slitherie · 07/04/2023 08:34

Nope, sounds like hell on earth but that’s what you get holidaying in the UK

I holiday in Northumberland where I expect it to be dark and rainy and I plan for that 😂

LubaLuca · 07/04/2023 08:36

Board games, treats, fish and chips on the seafront (nothing visible, car windows steamed up), wearing waterproofs and making the most of it...

Is there any entertainment where you're staying? Swimming pool or amusements type things?

You don't go to Cornwall in April for wall to wall sunshine, you'll enjoy yourselves anyway.

Board games 😂 you could do that at home! How boring!

LubaLuca · 07/04/2023 08:40

I couldn't exactly suggest hide and seek in a caravan.

Xiaoxiong · 07/04/2023 08:40

No Cornwall is great in the rain because there is lots to do even in the rain, and when you do get 10 mins of sun it's wonderful!! And the rain is never really constant - it blows over in a short time and then you get some sunshine. Good raincoat and wellies and the beach and the coastal path are easily accessed.

Not sure where you'll be, but when it rains we have:
Eden
Heligan
Maritime Museum in Falmouth
Shipwreck museum in Charleston
Model railway museum and tiny aquarium in Mevagissey
Wheal Coates museum in st austell
Royal Cornwall museum in truro (they have a mummy!!) - loads of lovely cafes and independent shops in Truro too
Telegraph museum at porthcurno
Trebah gardens
Lanhydrock
Enys Gardens
Laser quest in Penryn
Victorian village at Flambards and when the kids were little there was a play barn there too
Launceston town museum which is stuffed full of random things, it's wonderful
Levant Mine

And my absolute favourite for post-accident Chernobyl vibes, Geevor Tin Mine with even the coffee cups and work boots still left where they were the day the mine closed.

No but hide and seek in the woods would be fun. Does Cornwall have woods? I’ve never been. Never fancied it personally, I always imagine it to to be busy and wolf fleece

whiteroseredrose · 07/04/2023 08:42

One of my best childhood memories is paddling in the sea in Cromer in pouring rain and wearing a kagoul.

Don't let the weather stop you having fun.

Xiaoxiong · 07/04/2023 08:43

Also it says on my app that only Tuesday and Friday are likely to be actually rainy all day - the other days are scattered showers only.

kirinm · 07/04/2023 08:43

I am currently abroad on holiday having spent literally thousands and the weather has been really rubbish. I'm so pissed off!

Oblomov23 · 07/04/2023 08:45

Looking to go to our caravan in Dorset next week. Don't want to be in constant rain though.

GuyFawkesDay · 07/04/2023 08:45

You get your waterproofs on and do it anyway! Most stuff in Cornwall has insides too, you just have to roll with the weather and tog up. Use it as an excuse for a hot chocolate or some chips

CalistoNoSolo · 07/04/2023 08:46

Wine should dull the pain.

Usernameisunavailable · 07/04/2023 08:48

I don’t blame you for feeling disappointed. I booked a week in Cornwall in August a few years back and the forecast was for torrential rain all week. I didn’t really want to go. In the end it was much better than forecast, hardly any rain all week during the daytime, only at a bit at night. Might be better than you expect!

MintJulia · 07/04/2023 08:50

Pack boots and waterproofs. It means the beaches and cliff paths will be less busy.

Go out in it anyway. Long walks in spectacular scenery followed by coffee and cake or cider and chips. Could be worse 🙂

Sirzy · 07/04/2023 08:52

It’s one of those things whereby mindset makes a difference if you go thinking “it’s going to rain it will be shit” then it will be. If you go thinking “it may be raining but we will still have fun” then you will.

some of my best childhood memories are U.K. holidays (all we had) in the rain!

nonetcurtains · 07/04/2023 08:52

I find if it's wet and miserable on the north coast it's better weather on the south, and vice versa. Whereabouts are you going?

FlowersAndBonnets · 07/04/2023 08:53

YANBU and this is exactly why UK holidays are shit.

do people really play board games at home- how tedious…. We play on holiday only with a bottle of wine.

SnowyGiveAway · 07/04/2023 08:55

We're the same but in a caravan in Scotland next week 😂

Nothing to do but make the best of it, bet your kids (if you have) won't care at all! Indoor activities - heritage centres and national trust etc. Big walks on the beach in full waterproofs. Meals out at nice restaurants. Indoor pool in there is one. Drives to explore other areas (it might be raining a few miles away). Poke around in shops. Cinema one night...

We're still looking forward to our holiday! I'm not British, but I've lived here long enough to expect rain and to have developed a good stock of waterproof clothes!!!

hopsalong · 07/04/2023 08:56

Snap. Am trying to console myself that the rain never lasts all day but feel a bit pissed off that there are SO many days of rain forecast. Haven't told kids. They have had lucky weather experiences in Cornwall.
Let's check the forecast again later and keep fingers crossed that it's changed (again)?!

me too! We considered being rained off a campsite a badge of honour

A holiday is what you make it, we have had wonderful and shit holidays abroad as well as wonderful and shit holidays in the UK.

it’s not always sunshine abroad, we have been to Greece and had torrential rain for days on end whereas we have had glorious sunshine in Scarborough.

This. And I don’t get why people rave about Eden. It’s shit. It’s a big overpriced greenhouse. Ok, two big overpriced greenhouses.
