Booked to go to Cornwall next week and it’s looking like rain all week, AIBU to feel down about it?

Got the week off next week, booked a caravan in Cornwall and looking at the forecast it’s looking pretty rubbish. I can’t help feel annoyed about it! I know I should be grateful to just have a week off work but how do I get into happy holiday mode?! Any any tips of how to make the best of a rainy caravan break?!

Each to their own but I can’t imagine sitting playing board games when I’m on holiday, isn’t the whole point to be out exploring somewhere new?

Not sure why the wine needed to be mentioned, you can drink wine at home too

is it not possible to do both in the course of a holiday?

April showers OP it won't piss down the entire time.

It pissed it down solidly for 48 hours the other day.

And I don’t get why people rave about Eden. It’s shit.

Completely agree, it is shit. Only thing decent to go to Eden for, is the Eden Sessions.

YANBU! I would also be angry!!! No helpful advice I'm afraid, but now scientists have sorted out the covid vaccine they can buckle down and start work on being able to see the future :”

On what basis would you be angry at a forecast of rain, in England, in April?

Angry because it's not fair. It is not fair that OP took time off work, and she gets rain. It's not fair that OP is going to travel all the way to Cornwall, and she gets rain. It's not fair that right now the weather is beautiful and sunny, and when she goes next week she gets rain. Everyone has the right to feel emotion, and if she wants to be angry damn it let her be angry!

I’ve chosen a tiny cottage in Wales - no wifi , minimal mobile and two young teen sons 😂… we will make the most of it - walks scrabble and books - hopefully they won’t kill one another

No but hide and seek in the woods would be fun. Does Cornwall have woods? I’ve never been. Never fancied it personally, I always imagine it to to be busy and wolf fleece

Tehiddy woods is cool especially for kids if you haven't been before

YANBU and this is exactly why UK holidays are shit.

“This. And I don’t get why people rave about Eden. It’s shit. It’s a big overpriced greenhouse. Ok, two big overpriced greenhouses.”

It really isn’t.

Ok. So, if I went on a day out there with you, what would you show me, that I obviously missed when I went, that will totally convince me its not just a greenhouse and was worth the thick end of £80 for two of us.

The best thing I saw was a big sculpture thingy that was blowing out smoke rings.

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/04/2023 09:58

Everything! Species from every part of the world. So much to learn - if you’re interested in botany and ecology. If you’re not, not quite sure why you would go, unless you know everything already. It’s not a theme park.
Lots of information about what to expect in the website.

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/04/2023 09:58

Can’t wait for Eden North to begin 😃

PenguinIce · 07/04/2023 10:00

In fairness to Eden, they have some really good Easter theme things on at the moment that younger kids would really enjoy. It does get busy though when it is raining.

Windingdown · 07/04/2023 10:01

Having lived in Cornwall I'd say that the weather there is such a series of microclimates that the weather forecast is never right. Often a big black cloud is over Cornwall on the news forecast and it's sunny all day. It's rarely as bad as predicted and there is always something lovely to do.

nicetoseetgesunsout · 07/04/2023 10:01

My sister (and I) live in London but she had a place in Cornwall so goes there often. We have family there. She's taking her granddaughter who is 5, on Tuesday for a week.
They are going to:

Beach for paddling and rock pooling in a wet suit
Jungle Jacks in Newquay
Dairyland
Flambards
Newquay trampolining
Newquay zoo
Lappa Valley

Have a great time - there's loads to do in Cornwall

I only trust the weather forecast for the next few hours in Cornwall. It could be torrential rain on the north coast and a beautiful spring day on the south coast only 15 miles away. Normally if it’s sunning in the morning it’s raining by the afternoon.
I would download a decent weather radar App (and abandon the BBC app which is really crap for Cornwall for some reason) and bring kit for every type of spring weather that you can imagine grin

This
weather forecast not that accurate in advance so don’t panic. Take waterproof clothing etc or extra coat to change into etc and suitable footwear. Get out into it and walk, you will feel good after!
research the activities, try board or card games, online yoga sessions you never have time to do.

If you weren't interested in the things on offer at Eden then why did you go? Your £80 would have gone a long way doing alternatives that you liked. Not everywhere is for everyone.

So a greenhouse then. One with many different species I’ll grant you. But a greenhouse none the less.

Karwomannghia · 07/04/2023 10:05

I go to Cornwall a lot and have family there. The forecast is rubbish as in inaccurate and changes so quickly - it can be completely different in two close areas as well. The very south west seems to have its own micro climate too so honestly ignore the forecast, there will be bits of rain but not always.

Well yes, that’s the point. Plus the acres of outside gardens and various exhibitions throughout the year, ice skating at Christmas, etc.
Not quite sure what you were expecting?

Moredarkchocolateplease · 07/04/2023 10:08

This is why I refuse to go on holiday at Easter. We've been to Portugal at Easter and watched the rain sluice down the windows.

And the Lake District at Easter where I come home with raw excema on my hands from the wind and cold.

There is nothing appealing about drying wet clothes on holiday. We live in the country with two dogs so spend our whole lives cleaning up mud and drying wet dog walking clothes. Who wants to do that on holiday?

faffadoodledo · 07/04/2023 10:14

@Slitherie loads of woods! Penrose, tehidy, Helford. Fowey, Lanhydrock. Just the ones I know!

ConstanceOcean · 07/04/2023 10:15

I live in Cornwall and one of the worst things about it is how busy it gets when it’s sunny!

On the days it rains is when I usually head to the beach.
If you’re going swimming then you’re going to get wet anyway!

I also love going on walks in the rain.

If you have young kids they’ll absolutely love going out in the rain.
Get some waterproofs and wellies.

There is nothing better than playing in the rain and then coming home and having a shower, getting in your PJs, having a hot chocolate and watching a film or playing a board game.

It might not be the trip you had planned but I guarantee you’ll have some wonderful memories!

Where abouts in Cornwall will you be going?

faffadoodledo · 07/04/2023 10:15

I've had a wet Easter in the Algarve. Cycling oooof!

RaininSummer · 07/04/2023 10:16

I think a rainy week is what's known as a tradition Cornish holiday. Spent my whole childhood like that but happy memories.

Densol57 · 07/04/2023 10:19

I agree OP. Me and my partner are just on the way home from a short visit this week. Weather was glorious 4 out of 5 days. We both agreed though that Cornwall is miserable in the rain and all you seem to do is eat pasties or cream teas.
I feel your pain 😢

Tessisme · 07/04/2023 10:19

YANBU. But it's ALWAYS fecking raining here in NI and the place is heaving with tourists. They don't seem to mind. The weirdos🤣

kernowpicklepie · 07/04/2023 10:19

LakieLady · 07/04/2023 08:59

I'd add to @Xiaoxiong's excellent list the seal sanctuary at Gweek. They have otters and things as well.

But generally, I subscribe to the belief that there's no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes. Rock pooling in the rain is just as good as in the dry.

Actually the otters aren't there anymore as one died so the other one was moved. They've replaced them with beavers.

I never check the forecast and I live here. I just always take a coat out with me incase it rains. 🤣

DelphiniumBlue · 07/04/2023 10:21

The weather varies quite dramatically on the different parts of the Cornish coast, so keep checking the weather apps for the opposite side, and follow the sun!
