Booked to go to Cornwall next week and it’s looking like rain all week, AIBU to feel down about it?

Got the week off next week, booked a caravan in Cornwall and looking at the forecast it’s looking pretty rubbish. I can’t help feel annoyed about it! I know I should be grateful to just have a week off work but how do I get into happy holiday mode?! Any any tips of how to make the best of a rainy caravan break?!

@ClassicLib We've got drought conditions in Cornwall as our reservoirs were half full at the end of summer. There's a hosepipe ban in place. We've had rain in March but we had little or no rain last summer or this winter. But the grass is now green and the countryside is stunning.

GettingThereCharleyBear · 07/04/2023 22:19

@FlowersAndBonnets well lucky you having the option to go abroad 🙄. We’ve had dozens of fabulous UK holidays - you make them what they are, not the weather.

FrostyFifi · 07/04/2023 22:26

Ooh dear, bad weather on that French coast as well.

Aye the weather is near enough as pish in Brittany as its larger cousin 😁
Will be lovely in the south of France though.

We should holiday together 😂 this is exactly the type of holiday we enjoy. Adventure and exploring - not sat in a cafe playing board games looking out the window at the rain. I can’t think of anything more depressing. And like you said, exploring can be done cheaply, you don’t need to stay at the Hilton. One of the most memorable nights I ever had was sleeping in a mud built Hogan (a mud hut) in Utah. No electric, no running water, dirt floor … I’ll never ever forget it

I mean maybe I would love to. When my kids are older, I desperately want to get a Europe train pass and hop around Europe backpacking. But right now, I have two small kids, single parenthood and a body that is recovering from multiple ops. Holidays at home or abroad where we have a quiet time and don't go far are actually what we need.

People have a lot of limitations. Money is one. Health is another - I need to be in a place in easy reach of medical care with someone who speaks English if I need to get it. I most likely won't but there's always a chance I will need a doctor. My mum in her last couple of years needed a UK hospital in driving range - but she still enjoyed going away. Age of child is a third.

”First you said it’s not just a greenhouse, now you’re saying it is and that’s the entire point! Ice skating at christmas is somewhat irrelevant when I visited in June, and as for zip wires, if I’d wanted theme park rides I’d have gone to one. I’ve been to real rain forests and I guess I expected something more like that, but on a smaller scale obviously. Species we hadn’t seen before, or have rarely seen. There were a few birds and insects around, but I did think there’d be more. I also didn’t expect the huge crowd meaning we had to shuffle at snails place, and if an interesting insect did appear the huge screaming crowd of kids around it scared it off in very short order. Nor did we expect the kids deliberately swinging the wobbly bridge so we couldn’t cross it, we went back several times, each time a new group was doing the same. The cloud bridge was also disappointing, just water vapour blowing out of holes in it, and the ever present groups of kids standing over them, screaming each time they went off. Not sure what I expected, but not that.

If others like it, good for them. But to me, there was very little I’ve not seen elsewhere, and while I admit I’ve been lucky to travel to real rain forests, a hefty chunk of what was there can be seen in public greenhouses elsewhere for considerably less money.”

You’ve visited real rain forests and were disappointed with “greenhouses”? That’s hardly surprising, is it, in those circumstances. Like comparing apples with oranges.

yes, you have been lucky. Most people aren’t and I expect most of them will find Eden a fabulous experience.

Pupinski · 08/04/2023 18:53

Take a coat? 🤷‍♀️

WMA · 08/04/2023 19:35

If you suspect the weather will be bad, you have a chance NOW to plan for it!! Ensure you know of dry places to go and take fun indoor things to do or extra books to curl up with. Finally, make sure you take weather appropriate clothing and an umbrella! A change is as good as a rest, and enjoy the sun as it peaks through the clouds.

ZsaZsaTheCat · 08/04/2023 19:57

We spent a week in Skye and it rained EVERY DAY. Did we moan -no because this is the UK and sometimes it RAINS. Get your coats on, use your imagination and get outside. We cooked lovely meals from scratch ( don’t have time for this usually) , read books, went to a whiskey distillery, visited all sorts of interesting places and played board games. When we went out to the local pub for lunch everyone had come in from the rain and it was a lovely atmosphere. Think yourself lucky to have a holiday 🤔

Stressedmum1966 · 08/04/2023 20:15

lots to do Eden Project, surfing - lots of surf schools where rain doesn’t stop play. The Tate at St Ives, we spent a rainy September in there, eating fish & chips, surfing, watching films, playing boards games, thinking sod it we’ll just go out in the rain. The beaches are beautiful rain or shine. Just relax.

Stressedmum1966 · 08/04/2023 20:19

Meant to say we booked to go to Venice just before last Easter, last hol before I had a big cancer op. As was the case for many others it was cancelled with 24 hours notice. We went to Cornwall instead & had a fantastic time - rain, wind, sun, good food & relaxation.

Minime88888888 · 08/04/2023 20:26

Waking up in the morning and lying in bed while listening to the rain pitter patter on the roof of a caravan in one of my most favourite things. You'll have a ball. Go all Poldark on the clifftops at St Just.

User639762456 · 08/04/2023 20:35

It will probably just be a bit showery like it has been a for lot of March, make sure you take some decent macs and footwear and it will be fine

Cookiedough22 · 08/04/2023 20:39

April showers in April 🤔

SpecialControlGroup · 08/04/2023 20:44

Some of my favourite memories of being a child is running around in waterproofs and wellies on a wet and rainy beach somewhere in the UK!

Jochef · 08/04/2023 21:04

I love being in a caravan when it’s raining, and it’s the UK - it rains 🤷🏻‍♀️ But I imagine the rain in Cornwall is different from say rain in Northumbria or North Wales ? A slate mine in Wales in sideways rain, three kids and a big wet dog - now that’s a shit day out.

ohjeesus · 08/04/2023 22:30

Exactly…why would you go anywhere in uk in April! Prob cheaper to go abroad

Gemcat1 · 08/04/2023 23:07

I don't know where you are going in Cornwall but have a look on google to see what you can do indoors. Certainly the Eden Project is worth a visit. In the evenings there are pubs where you could have a meal and maybe take a book. I'm aware that Cornwall is there for the scenery but there is also a lot of history. Take a waterproof coat and boots and enjoy https://www.visitcornwall.com/

So much of AIBU consists of people refusing to believe that different people like different things 🤣🤣🤣

Person A: ugh why do people holiday in the UK ffs, how could you ENJOY going for a walk in the RAIN???

Person B: wtf is the matter with you, I LOVE rainy walks, why would you want to go abroad and sit on a bloody sun lounger by a pool all day???

🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

The real issue here is why on earth did OP decide to go to Cornwall in April if she knew that a bit of rain would ruin her fun...

Onholiday2 · 09/04/2023 07:09

I’m in Ghana and have not had time in sun as visiting holiday and I am very grumpy about it - so I hear you! But see what you can do you’ll enjoy,

whirlyswirly · 09/04/2023 12:45

I really like heligan in the rain. The fern jungle bit is lovely.

Eden is incredible given what it used to be. We have also been to real rainforests and it's the next best thing in the uk on a cold winters day. Eden sessions in the summer are fantastic. It's a great venue.

August has always been the worst month for weather in all the years I've lived here. June is my favourite. Flowers are all out and you usually get sunshine.

I don't think April is a reliable month anywhere non tropical. We are currently abroad in the med and it's a bit hit and miss here too.

Macinae · 09/04/2023 23:56

Been on a few rainy holidays and if you're pissed off about something you can't control it'll ruin your whole week, so try to change your mindset before you go.

As a PP said (and another mocked) board games are always a hit in our family. Get a pizza and bottle of wine and take the piss out of your crap drawings in pictionary.

Read a book, watch films, basically just enjoy a change of scenery and having family time.

Have a look at indoor attractions in the local area.

I doubt it'll be raining 24/7 so plan your walks for when there's a break in the weather, take your wellies and a waterproof jacket.

A holiday is what you make it.

JFDIYOLO · 10/04/2023 00:49

Great suggestions in the thread. Also take all the books and jumpers and candles and wine and brollies, and Instagram the heck out of your gorgeous traditional / vintage style holiday.

C1239 · 10/04/2023 07:31

Thank you everyone, didn’t expect so many replies! You are right, any holiday is what you make it!

You can never tell with the weather, it rained last evening and it's a beautiful sunny day on the south coast of Cornwall
Anyone thinking of visiting the Eden Project you it's by timed tickets only.

As the Scandinavians say "There is no such thing as bad weather, just a bad choice of clothing".
Be prepared.
