Booked to go to Cornwall next week and it’s looking like rain all week, AIBU to feel down about it?

Got the week off next week, booked a caravan in Cornwall and looking at the forecast it’s looking pretty rubbish. I can’t help feel annoyed about it! I know I should be grateful to just have a week off work but how do I get into happy holiday mode?! Any any tips of how to make the best of a rainy caravan break?!

TBF Northumberland is one of the driest counties in the UK.

But bloody cold!

Spanielsarepainless · 07/04/2023 11:01

My siblings and I still talk about a wet week in the summer in Norfolk, probably in the 1970s, when we were on the beach in our swimming costumes and Fair Isle jerseys, building sandcastles. Mum and Dad sat in deckchairs with an umbrella up. Thank goodness for the beach hut to make a hot drink!

FabFitFifties · 07/04/2023 11:02

How old are DC? I agree, whilst you'd rather it wasn't raining, there is still plenty to fill everyday, a quick goggle shows you that. You might spend a little more time on the road than you planned, but not huge amounts. My son's favourite memory of one caravan holiday was the night there was a huge storm and everything was 10 times louder than normal 🤣 And no it wasn't because the rest of the holiday was crap!

Visit the Eden Project?

Hands down, the most boring place I’ve ever been.

WestwardHo1 · 07/04/2023 11:03

OP it's very often really windy and damp in Cornwall (due to being surrounded by sea of course), but it's very rare that it rains for a week. No forecast will be able to say that. If the forecast is showing rain every day at the moment, what it means is it looks like there may be some rain at some point during any of the days i.e low pressure.

A few years ago the Met Office came under enormous fire from Visit Cornwall for this style of forecasting. It was really affecting bookings, but as it turned out the weather we got was nothing like was forecast.

It's not going to be warm and sunny and dry all week, but you knew that because you booked a week in April in Cornwall. Didn't you? If you want a dry UK holiday you're much better off heading to the east coast.

I don’t think you’re playing the right kind of board games 😉

We have board game night every week. And there’s no alcohol involved because it’s just not necessary Confused

This - I hate how everything on here needs to include “wine”. If you need alcohol to enjoy yourself there is something seriously wrong

@Nishky32

i generally like to do some stuff that I can’t do in the place I live

board games just seems so dull as I say I would need plenty of vino for that

It why aren’t board games dull at home

Meltinthemiddle · 07/04/2023 11:08

I imagine it's just showers and I always find when you are on holiday it makes you go out regardless of the weather just make sure dress appropriately. I would maybe pre plan for the weather for rainy days and sunny days. I think Tuesday is the worst so maybe swimming at hendra (Newquay)which have a great pool, shopping trip to truro and lunch. Avoid Eden project it's shit and overpriced. St Ives normally has good weather surprisingly. Visit lots of beaches and get hot chocolate and cakes, fish and chips. You will be amazed at the amount of people sat on the beach in the rain in Cornwall trying to make the most of it. It's great for watching surfers. Maybe do a boat trip.

Hellybelly84 · 07/04/2023 11:09

Sadly its part of holidaying in the UK. But kids really dont care, there are tons of places to visit in the rain and all they want is to spend time with you.

As others have said, if you had booked abroad at this time, you could have also got a mixed bag of weather same as if you book Cornwall in the Summer holidays. You need to book the Med in June-September if you want close to guaranteed sun.

Hope you enjoy your break and can report back that you had a good time.

Take appropriate clothing for when it does rain, make the most of the times when it isn’t raining. Which will be most of the time. It’s April, it’s not going to be sun bathing weather anyway, so plan activities that reflect the season, and the weather.

I drink wine on holiday - I rarely drink for the rest of the year. There is nothing wrong with me thank you so much for your concern though.

an imagine of a family playing board games on holiday …

Its pissing it down
the kids are bored
the parents are fed up
dad suggests a board game
kids groan and start thinking of their mates away in Florida

FFS no board games! Get your wellies and good coats out and go exploring in the woods, play SAS soldiers or zombie apocalypse (hide and seek with a twist) just don’t get the fucking BORED games out

NotQuiteUsual · 07/04/2023 11:11

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/04/2023 10:52

@NotQuiteUsual
wrong
there is such a thing as bad weather

I mean obviously it's a bit tongue in cheek. Funnily enough hurricanes, blizzards and heatwaves exist. But if you're holidaying in the UK in April, I'd think it almost goes without saying you need to be prepared for some soggy weather. Nothing wrong with OP being disappointed about it, but there's also no reason to let it rain on her parade(lol) totally.

As I said earlier - there are many hours in a day- you could actually do both in one day on holiday- my kids used to love board games- we would play them in 32 degree heat around the pool

i would 💯 need wine for a wet weather caraven holiday in the uk. No shame for that here.

the kids may not care - but op does!
and it’s her holiday too!

MrsJBaptiste · 07/04/2023 11:18

We've had a few August holidays in Cornwall and have rarely had great weather - I would never want to go in April, sorry OP!

We just follow the least worse weather so drive between the North and South coasts to try and stay away from the rain. Hopefully the weather won't be quite as bad as the forecast 🤞

@CovertImage

people are allowed to say when something is shit!

and to a lot of people a weather weather caravan ‘holiday’ in the uk is just that.

HazyDragon · 07/04/2023 11:25

Same! In fact we buy new games when we have a holiday coming up, so we must be doubly boring 😂

Who wants to go charging around 'exploring' for every waking moment they are away? Sounds exhausting and like forced 'fun' to me.

We don't always have time to sit and play games together in our everyday lives because we are busy, hence the holiday!!

Even when we were in Florida we still loved a game of Uno or some other card game around the pool, it's called down time.

One of my best childhood memories is paddling in the sea in Cromer in pouring rain and wearing a kagoul.

Don't let the weather stop you having fun.

You've made my feet go blue just thinking about it! Sitting on the pier with a Sara Jane getting blown away then off to Sheringham for a Ronaldo's and on to Wiveton for what my granddaughter calls tea in a field! A spring day in Norfolk, hoping the hoards are still not here.

Nishky32 · 07/04/2023 11:29

@HazyDragon we have been known to buy new board games too! Now my kids are older it tends to be cards around the pool in the evening

CornishYarg · 07/04/2023 11:30

Ah, that's rubbish OP. Hopefully it won't be non-stop rain and you can get out and just dodge the showers. A combination of indoor activities, obligatory stops for yummy Cornish food and making the most of breaks in the rain to get outdoors will hopefully keep you occupied.

As others have said, though, Cornwall has a micro climate and the weather forecasts are notoriously unreliable. Our motto is "If it's raining on one coast, try the other. And if it's raining on both, try Falmouth as that seems to have an entirely separate weather system!"
