Booked to go to Cornwall next week and it’s looking like rain all week, AIBU to feel down about it?

Got the week off next week, booked a caravan in Cornwall and looking at the forecast it’s looking pretty rubbish. I can’t help feel annoyed about it! I know I should be grateful to just have a week off work but how do I get into happy holiday mode?! Any any tips of how to make the best of a rainy caravan break?!

Board games 😂 you could do that at home! How boring!

That's a bit rude! There's nothing boring about board games....playing games together is a lot less boring than a family sitting glued to phones!

Urgh , years ago we went to Ruda Holiday Park (Croyde ) in the week of the August BH . The day we drove there was gorgeous then it pissed down....all week
I thought someone was stamping about on our caravan roof it was so loud .

There was an indoor pool (huge queues) , some sports (archery)
The beach was across the road but it was wild !

In the 30 minute breaks of dry , we dared to go out to explore

But on the first full day , DH and I went to the nearest supermarket in a monsoon , we were questioning ourselves .
This should've been one of the nicest weeks of the year .

Rainy holiday in a caravan. It's all a bit Father Ted.

do people really play board games at home- how tedious…. We play on holiday only with a bottle of wine.

I don’t think you’re playing the right kind of board games 😉

We have board game night every week. And there’s no alcohol involved because it’s just not necessary Confused

Where are you staying, just menion a close by town or village, and we can help a bit more.

Some sites have activities too.

NotQuiteUsual · 07/04/2023 10:38

There's no bad weather, only bad clothes. I know it's cliche but it's absolutely true. My best beach trip was the one in sideways rain where my son found a huge rock he thought was a dinosaur egg and spent half an hour sitting on it to hatch it.

On the practical side, buy a thermos. A hot drink does wonders to warm you up. We have so many lovely memories of sitting in the car boot with a mug of hot chocolate. Lots of layers. Rain isn't unpleasant if you can stay warm and keep your body dry. Bring two coats per person, so you can always have a dry one to put on at the start of the day. Can you buy everyone a pair of waterproof trousers? Makes a huge difference and you can hear everyone in your group coming a mile off so keeps everyone safe 🤣

I absolutely adore rainy weather(I moved to the North East and the weather was part of the attraction). Countryside in the rain is absolutely beautiful. It's a different kind of beauty, but it's wonderful in its own way.

Rosula · 07/04/2023 10:42

St Ives is good in the rain, because you can duck into art galleries and a good selection of shops, cafes and restaurants if the rain starts. There's also places like the Barbara Hepworth Museum, St Ives Museum and the Tate Gallery for longer indoors visits if it's chucking down - also they have good weekly craft and farmers' markets in the Town Hall. Absolutely beautiful train journey down the coast from the Park and Ride at St Erth, too.

Iwasafool · 07/04/2023 10:44

I live in a holiday town, I always feel so sorry for families when the weather is bad. It is so expensive to visit all the indoor entertainment places, even having a cream tea if you are a family with 2 adults and a couple of children costs a small fortune and that's after paying quite a lot of money for a caravan. It is different if it is adults, I've been camping when it rained all week, I spent lots of time lying reading a book listening to the rain on the canvas and then putting waterproofs on and exploring but it isn't that easy, or cheap, with kids.

Is that adults only of family?

Board games, treats, fish and chips on the seafront (nothing visible, car windows steamed up), wearing waterproofs and making the most of it...

Is there any entertainment where you're staying? Swimming pool or amusements type things?

You don't go to Cornwall in April for wall to wall sunshine, you'll enjoy yourselves anyway.

@LubaLuca

urghhh who wants to play board games on holiday??

you could do that at home

id have to have a lot of wine to cope with that

Everything! Species from every part of the world. So much to learn - if you’re interested in botany and ecology. If you’re not, not quite sure why you would go, unless you know everything already. It’s not a theme park.
Lots of information about what to expect in the website.

“So a greenhouse then. One with many different species I’ll grant you. But a greenhouse none the less.”

Well yes, that’s the point. Plus the acres of outside gardens and various exhibitions throughout the year, ice skating at Christmas, etc.
Not quite sure what you were expecting?

First you said it’s not just a greenhouse, now you’re saying it is and that’s the entire point! Ice skating at christmas is somewhat irrelevant when I visited in June, and as for zip wires, if I’d wanted theme park rides I’d have gone to one. I’ve been to real rain forests and I guess I expected something more like that, but on a smaller scale obviously. Species we hadn’t seen before, or have rarely seen. There were a few birds and insects around, but I did think there’d be more. I also didn’t expect the huge crowd meaning we had to shuffle at snails place, and if an interesting insect did appear the huge screaming crowd of kids around it scared it off in very short order. Nor did we expect the kids deliberately swinging the wobbly bridge so we couldn’t cross it, we went back several times, each time a new group was doing the same. The cloud bridge was also disappointing, just water vapour blowing out of holes in it, and the ever present groups of kids standing over them, screaming each time they went off. Not sure what I expected, but not that.

If others like it, good for them. But to me, there was very little I’ve not seen elsewhere, and while I admit I’ve been lucky to travel to real rain forests, a hefty chunk of what was there can be seen in public greenhouses elsewhere for considerably less money.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 07/04/2023 10:46

It’s Cornwall! We used to sometimes visit my great uncle who lived at Sennon and it poured with rain there. A lot of the SW I find rainy and one Easter it was so bad (went to Bradford on Avon) we had to drive into the nearest small/medium sized town as we’d either forgotten wellington boots or needed new ones! I also recall being stuck in a car when it was pissing rain looking at the Wiltshire white horse which we’d planned to visit but it was far too rainy to get out! We did go swimming a lot in the local pool - good rainy activity.

Depending what part of Cornwall you’re in there’s loads to do apart from the Eden project but you just need to bring waterproofs/umbrella.

Is it too late to cancel? I’ve just got back from Spain. Go there instead. Nothing beats the sunshine.

Do you never do anything on holiday that you could do at home? Eat out at restaurant- could do that at home-
go to pub- could do that at home
walk in countryside- could do that at home
visit a town- could do that at home

etc etc

i generally like to do some stuff that I can’t do in the place I live

board games just seems so dull as I say I would need plenty of vino for that

bellabasset · 07/04/2023 10:49

If you don't have one get a NT card. You can stop off en route and leaving to places like Saltram, Castle Drogo, visit Newquay, have a coffee in the Headland and watch the surfers, then visit Trerice - NT, Newquay Zoo, and there's a pool nearby. Apart from Heligan, which as I have a local pass I visit often, there's Charlestown, Fowey, Mevagissey and the beach at Carlyon Bay where there's yoga, music and the local boot camp who train in all weathers as well as the food outlets. My sister wanted to see Geevor and I can thoroughly recommend it and with an NT pass you get free entry at Levant where there's the steam engine. I love the village at Flambards. Then in Bodmin you have the War Museum as well as the most haunted place in England, Bodmin Jail, Lanhydrock House - NT - as well as the cycle trails. One of the cycle trails is from Bodmin via Wadebridge to Padstow. There's Glendurgan - NT - Paradise Park is great. You can get a boat trip from Truro to Falmouth, we have a beautiful cathedral, as well as the museum, the Hall for Cornwall. I worked here for 20 years and it's now a lovely town with lots of individual shops.

Sugargliderwombat · 07/04/2023 10:51

Take good waterproofs and go out anyway! It was never going yo be hot enough for a beach day so as long as you've got the gear it'll be great. Hire a wetsuit and go bodybuilding, things like that.

WonderingWanda · 07/04/2023 10:51

You will have a lovely time, check the weather forcast each day for north coast and south coast, often the have wildly different weather.
Not sure what part you are going to be in or if you have kids and what ages but lots of ideas.

Take or hire wetsuits and go body boarding, Go coasteering. Go to Glendurgan, St Michaeals Mount, Heligan, The Eden Project, St Ives (beautiful in any weather). Do the Penzanze to St Ives bus trip. Hire bikes and do either the Camel Trail or Bissoe Tramway. Visit Tintagel, Fowey, Mousehole. Try Adrenaline Quarry (think it's near Saltash). Cornwall services had a clip and climb. Cardinham Woods, Carnglaze Caverns or Lanhydrock near Bodmin. Have a mooch about the surf shops in Newquay and go for lunch on Fistral Beach and watch the surfers.

You'll have a great time!

Sugargliderwombat · 07/04/2023 10:51

wrong
there is such a thing as bad weather

caringcarer · 07/04/2023 10:53

If your kids are small my nephew's used to have little nets on sticks and they spent hours trying to catch a crab. They found a starfish once but came running to us. I think they were scared of it. They wore kagools and it was wet and windy but they did not seem to care. Try to enjoy your break.

zingally · 07/04/2023 10:55

No such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes.
