Booked to go to Cornwall next week and it’s looking like rain all week, AIBU to feel down about it?

Got the week off next week, booked a caravan in Cornwall and looking at the forecast it’s looking pretty rubbish. I can’t help feel annoyed about it! I know I should be grateful to just have a week off work but how do I get into happy holiday mode?! Any any tips of how to make the best of a rainy caravan break?!

@CovertImage

people are allowed to say when something is shit!

and to a lot of people a weather weather caravan ‘holiday’ in the uk is just that.

Nuts it's really rude and mean to say so to someone who's just about to do it

Not everyone is able to just head off abroad.

WestwardHo1 · 07/04/2023 11:31

OP I'm in West Cornwall. Where are you staying?

aNewYorkerInLondon · 07/04/2023 11:33

At least you know in advance. Pack good foul weather gear and get outdoors anyway. Dressed properly, you'll still have loads of fun!

Also, sounds like a great excuse for some lovely hearty foods. I'd probably take some jars of cassoulet and bottles of Côtes du Rhône for perfect rainy day meal.

FranKatzenjammer · 07/04/2023 11:33

Why the hate for board games? Tomorrow my boyfriend and I are off to Wales for our first holiday together- we're taking a whole bag of board games, including some new ones, and are really looking forward to it. We'll be going out for meals and walks too (and admittedly one of the board games is Monogamy...) but there'll be nothing 'boring' about our trip.

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 07/04/2023 11:33

It's very changeable in Cornwall so unlikely to be constant rain. We've had loads of good holidays down that way and only one was a complete wash out.

Ktime · 07/04/2023 11:41

At least you didn’t go in March, which was the wettest March in 40 years.

I think you have to take your chances at this time of year.

Nishky32 · 07/04/2023 10:45

Is that adults only of family?

Not now we have children, but we’ve been having weekly board game nights for a decade before we had them.

FlowersAndBonnets · 07/04/2023 11:43

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/04/2023 10:49

@Nishky32

i generally like to do some stuff that I can’t do in the place I live

board games just seems so dull as I say I would need plenty of vino for that

Yep, you’re definitely playing the wrong type of games. And if need alcohol for anything you need to look at your relationship with it.

OldFan · 07/04/2023 11:45

@C1239 I've been to Cornwall virtually every year for 20 years and there was only one year where the weather was so bad it was a complete write off.

So you'll probably be ok x

skyeisthelimit · 07/04/2023 11:46

It depends on the area but there is lots to do in Cornwall. A PP had a brilliant list of places close to the start of the thread.

If you are staying on a holiday park then is there a swimming pool? kids clubs?

We had many a rainy holiday in Cornwall, and we went swimming every day in the site pool, played card games for an hour, Uno is a good one to take , went for a walk on Polzeath beach in the rain (getting wet doesn't kill you), then back for a warm bubbly bath for DD (even that was holiday fun for DD as we only had a shower at home)..

The kids clubs on our site were great and DD did sand art, cake decorating, dance lessons, sports, treasure hunts and all sorts of things that kept her happy while I sat and drank coffee/hot chocolate.

CrapBucket · 07/04/2023 11:47

The biggest thing that makes or breaks a holiday is who you go with. We can all make the best of the weather even though it’s a shame, it just depends on who you are with as to if you will have a good time.

going abroad is often way cheaper than holidaying in the UK, especially somewhere like Cornwall.

It is April in the northern hemisphere of course YABU

@FlowersAndBonnets

i think my relationship with alcohol is fine thanks for your concern though. I know on mumsnet anyone who drinks more than a small glass of wine once a month is deemed as having a problem.

Whammyyammy · 07/04/2023 11:54

YANBU at all. 2 reasons why I don't holiday in uk;

  1. British tourist trades rip you off
  2. Weather is shit

Both make for an awful holiday

I sure hope MONOGOMY will prevail on your trip. 😂

But I think (hope) you meant Monopoly. Gave me a laugh anyway.

YANBU and this is exactly why UK holidays are shit.

Speak for yourself, we only holiday in UK and have a great time. I guess it's what you make of it, our kids love exploring everywhere we go.

Of course they do, because they’ve never experienced other cultures.

jamdonut · 07/04/2023 12:07

Never quite understood why anyone thinks that to have a good holiday you have to have wall to wall sunshine. You can still visit places in the rain and have a great time, children or no. The UK is an amazing place, if you just put a little effort into investigating what’s in the area you’re visiting.

RemoteControlDoobry · 07/04/2023 12:08

You’re allowed to feel however you feel. You don’t have to seek validation for them!

Leftbutcameback · 07/04/2023 12:08

YANBU, but also the weather could still change. April is tricky and sometimes it can be ok just down the road so use the Met Office web page - “is it going to rain today” - and see if you can avoid the worst of it.

Also research indoor activities inc cinemas, aquariums and bowling.

If you’re anywhere near the Lost Gardens I would say try that in the rain. There’s a valley with huge prehistoric type plants and it’s a bit like being in the rainforest.

Leftbutcameback · 07/04/2023 12:10

Rosula · 07/04/2023 10:42

St Ives is good in the rain, because you can duck into art galleries and a good selection of shops, cafes and restaurants if the rain starts. There's also places like the Barbara Hepworth Museum, St Ives Museum and the Tate Gallery for longer indoors visits if it's chucking down - also they have good weekly craft and farmers' markets in the Town Hall. Absolutely beautiful train journey down the coast from the Park and Ride at St Erth, too.

Great suggestions! A steam train ride in the rain is lovely. And I’d forgotten the galleries

Elphame · 07/04/2023 12:11

I don't think I've ever had a sunny holiday in Cornwall. I have early memories of eating sandwiches in the car with rain coursing down the windows and straining to actually see Land's End through the murk!

I've learned a thing or two since and invested in some wet weather gear so we do as we planned whatever the weather.

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 07/04/2023 12:11

Sirzy · 07/04/2023 08:52

It’s one of those things whereby mindset makes a difference if you go thinking “it’s going to rain it will be shit” then it will be. If you go thinking “it may be raining but we will still have fun” then you will.

some of my best childhood memories are U.K. holidays (all we had) in the rain!

Very much this!

This. A week in Italy is probably cheaper than a week in Cornwall
