Booked to go to Cornwall next week and it’s looking like rain all week, AIBU to feel down about it?

Got the week off next week, booked a caravan in Cornwall and looking at the forecast it’s looking pretty rubbish. I can’t help feel annoyed about it! I know I should be grateful to just have a week off work but how do I get into happy holiday mode?! Any any tips of how to make the best of a rainy caravan break?!

I've come on holiday to IOM this week. The forecast the week before we came was terrible. Rain ever day. The reality has been sunny every day apart from one rainy day. Weather fronts change so fingers crossed it will change for you too.

Pack boots and waterproofs. It means the beaches and cliff paths will be less busy.

Go out in it anyway. Long walks in spectacular scenery followed by coffee and cake or cider and chips. Could be worse 🙂

My kind of thinking!

Easterfunbun · 07/04/2023 08:58

It’s okay to be pissed off. I’ve had some lovely caravan holidays in the Easter hols, May half term and summer hols. You can make the most of it in the rain but it definitely is shite. Joys hey! ☔️.

LakieLady · 07/04/2023 08:59

I'd add to @Xiaoxiong's excellent list the seal sanctuary at Gweek. They have otters and things as well.

But generally, I subscribe to the belief that there's no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes. Rock pooling in the rain is just as good as in the dry.

Cornwallintherain · 07/04/2023 08:59

First of all, follow Kernow Weather Team on Facebook.

Their weather forecasts are MUCH more accurate than the shitty Met Office who frequently predict the wrong conditions.

The Telegraph Museum is AMAZING (similar interactivity to Science Museum!) - people often forget about it buts its really good.

The Maritime Museum in Falmouth is good too!

Cornwallintherain · 07/04/2023 09:01

The forecast next week isn't TOO bad to be fair. One super rainy day. The rest are just showers meaning it can rain in Padstow but sunny in Newquay

Basically you'll have to do what the Cornish to and drive towards the blue sky 😂

Pendennis Castle, Trerice, Trellisick and St Mawes Castle are also lovely. Often have stuff to do and nice cafes!

Cornwallintherain · 07/04/2023 09:01

Ah sorry about typos!! MS fingers grrr

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 07/04/2023 09:03

My parents subscribed to the whole "there's no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing" thing and it was, as a general rule, utter bollocks Grin

I agree that decent clothing helps but ultimately some people don't mind the rain and some hate it.

I work outdoors in all weathers and I have all the appropriate gear but there's something really miserable about trudging around in damp waterproofs on your holidays.

Personally I'd chuck money at it and do as many indoor activities as possible Grin

YANBU and this is exactly why UK holidays are shit.

I wasn't going to say this but I agree. Unfortunately me and DH clash as he would never go abroad if I didn't force him once in a while. I've only had one uk holiday in the last ten years where it didn't piss down most of the week. I fucking hate rain and although you make the most of it it does spoil it imo.

I had a rainy week in Cornwall a few years ago and we had a nice week just doing what we would have done if the sun had been out....but just got wet 😂

iamenougheveryday · 07/04/2023 09:07

YANBU! I would also be angry!!! No helpful advice I'm afraid, but now scientists have sorted out the covid vaccine they can buckle down and start work on being able to see the future :)

faffadoodledo · 07/04/2023 09:08

Where will you be OP? Cornwall is a long county. There is plenty to do but if you're near Lands End I won't be recommending stuff to do near Looe!
Mainly though don't despair. The weather here can change so quickly. There has to be a very settled low or high for medium range forecasts to be accurate. St worst you may just get some isolated showers

do people really play board games at home- how tedious…. We play on holiday only with a bottle of wine.

Each to their own but I can’t imagine sitting playing board games when I’m on holiday, isn’t the whole point to be out exploring somewhere new?

Not sure why the wine needed to be mentioned, you can drink wine at home too

I was just about to say the same thing! Just bring waterproofs and get on with whatever you planned.

To add to places to visit, Paradise Park in Hayle is good, it also has otters, and you can hand feed the penguins. There's a go-karting place nearby too which is always good for a bit of fun.
If you're further east, Adrenaline Quarry has a really long zip-wire and also has go-karting. There's Kernow Adventure Park just outside of Penryn, where you can do Wipe-Out or have a go at wake boarding. On the same road, there's also BF Adventure (kayaking, rock climbing, archery and more) and Via Ferrata (more adventures in a quarry and worth a visit just for the coffee shop - best cakes ever!).

Are you coming as a couple or with kids?

Wailywailywaily · 07/04/2023 09:09

I only trust the weather forecast for the next few hours in Cornwall. It could be torrential rain on the north coast and a beautiful spring day on the south coast only 15 miles away. Normally if it’s sunning in the morning it’s raining by the afternoon.
I would download a decent weather radar App (and abandon the BBC app which is really crap for Cornwall for some reason) and bring kit for every type of spring weather that you can imagine grin

Whiterose23 · 07/04/2023 09:12

It could be worse, we’re camping 😂
Not in Cornwall and the weather for us isn’t looking horrendous but rain is forecast.
We’re still looking forward to going and will have fun but I’m anticipating having to throw loads of money at activities to keep the kids happy.

Rosula · 07/04/2023 09:18

We went to Wheal Martyn China Clay works in pouring rain, and the kids enjoyed it all the more as a result of the rain.

Hippywannabe · 07/04/2023 09:27

Ae you near Plymouth? We have The box which.is free, it has lots to look at , a mammoth and activities for kids to do. There is also the Aquarium tvthat is expensive.

Icannever · 07/04/2023 09:31

If you have them or can get hold of some I would pack wetsuits and bodyboards and get in the sea. Bad weather generally means better surfing, you’ll be wet anyway in the sea and wetsuits will keep you warm at least 😊

eyeblob · 07/04/2023 09:35

I live in Cornwall. Sun is out right now. P's down loads which is why it is green and beautiful here. Plenty to do in rain, where are you staying?

“This. And I don’t get why people rave about Eden. It’s shit. It’s a big overpriced greenhouse. Ok, two big overpriced greenhouses.”

It really isn’t.

MeinKraft · 07/04/2023 09:38

April showers OP it won't piss down the entire time.

On what basis would you be angry at a forecast of rain, in England, in April?

This. And I don’t get why people rave about Eden. It’s shit. It’s a big overpriced greenhouse. Ok, two big overpriced greenhouses.

I agree, that’s a day of my life I’ll never get back

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 07/04/2023 09:42

As others have said there's lots you can do in the rain. If you are down west I would definitely suggest Truro for a day and Falmouth for a day. Falmouth has beaches too so if it does brighten up that's a good option.

There's lots of small animal sanctuaries and wildlife parks as well which can be really good.

How old are your children and where are you staying?

A holiday is what you make it, we have had wonderful and shit holidays abroad as well as wonderful and shit holidays in the UK.

it’s not always sunshine abroad, we have been to Greece and had torrential rain for days on end whereas we have had glorious sunshine in Scarborough.

Totally agree, we travelled all over the world with our now grown kids and they still talk fondly about the rainy week on the banks of a Scottish loch fishing with wellies and waterproofs ( they didn't catch a thing all week) followed by bacon and eggs and Monopoly! It's about the memories 😊 It was the cheapest holiday we ever had.
